they added a bit of a tie in with this song in bayonetta. great song. soft and relaxing. asked if any of my co workers were going to scarborough fair and they didnt understand. poor fools.....
Borrowed from English folk singer Martin Carthy. Beautiful version and all that but Carthy deserves some of the credit for unearthing this gem of a song. Thumbs up to make sure credit is given to all concerned ;-).
Dose anyone know if they ever sing this song with there own modification in live concert? You know, the one where Paul Simon sings some different words as counter melody instead of the same words as harmony like they do in the recorded version.
Never say "best song ever" or "the best singer" because you might incite other people who love other songs and singers more... there is not the best, one of the best is a better expression in my humble opinion...
There are great songs and then there is Scarborough Fair by Simon & Garfunkel. There is no other,Simply Said,THE BEST SONG EVER.Perfect in every way.Paul Simon's Acoustic Guitar combined with Art Garfunkel's perfect voice make this song stand the test of time.Simply the GREATEST SONG.
When this song was recorded they didn't have a lot of incredible electronics that can 'fix' your voice on the fly and that could even make me sound good singing. Surely a miracle. That said I don't hear any flaws in this song which is live of course. Would I could have been there to witness it. A truly enchanted time for music and I still think this is one of the most awesome male duo teams ever and wrote school reports on them as a kid. Simon is one amazing writer.

People say "Oh music was so much better then and they didnt base everything on looks" blah blah blah....But you people don't realize that if this was released today, if Simon and Garfunkel were 20 years old and promoted relentlessly it would NEVER NEVER SELL for the simple fact that kids haven't been raised on this kind of music. You think the music industry is THAT stupid? Compare it to people raised in 1800s and you play them heavy metal, all they would hear would be noise Music is association
I disagree sir. I ve been into rock and metal all my life. Since childhood I have had a special affection for rock music. But this song and sound of silence are just amazing. I think these songs trescend the boundaries of genre and era
@JamesTKirkCobain thou art thy idiot. Take the beatles for example the 60s BEATLES! they still have albums being sold IN THIS DAY AND AGE they had looks I agree but they weren't flashy and that crap they had natural look AND great music compare THAT to today's piece o shit music industry

I have to be honest....I love Paul, and I love Art. Was it Paul that was once quoted saying he didnt make the highest caliber of music in this team? I would have to say this DUO was the best, when it came to American music from this era?
So many memories is brought back when I listen to this song. This Live version from '69, reminds me of one particular summer. I listened to it all the time that year, and I still remember the ocean, the shining sun, my friends and I having fun during a time of happiness and melancholy. I remember sitting on a boat, looking ahead at all the possibilities that this summer and the rest of my life had to offer. I remember feeling alive. God bless Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel!
@Olimogtaba You paint a great picture. From my side of the "Pond", this song reminds me of times when my dad took us out in our little car to the countriside on a Sunday, and we'd stop off at a Pub but I'd have to sit outside because I was too young to drink inside, and I'd get a glass of Coke and a packet of crisps. Then I remember my first girlfriend, and I took her to the cinema to see The Graduate, and this song was a major part of that film. Happy days, eh?
@veda1954 crisps...with a little blue salt bag?☺I remember my older brother getting The Graduate LP with its raunchy cover and me playing it on our HUGE mono gramaphone/radiogram covertly at night, thinking what strange pispronounciation Americans made of 'Scarborough'/Scarbo-ro☺(the LP was curiously fullof foxtrot music tracks!?!)
@NvidiATI I am note sure about the lyrics but the tune sure is. The song talks about a fair in southern England where many fairs and festivals were held. I think there are rumors that Henry the VIII wrote the lyrics for one of the versions of this song.
another fantastic song, by an excellant duo. these two men were one of a kind group. very rare for a group to have one guitarist, and two vocalist, loved it,
See this was great cause it was before our damn obsession with the fact that all our performs had to look perfect (like now) with no regard for talent. S and G were just average looking guys with an amazing talent for creating music. Thank God they were before Mtv, Idol and Sony otherwise we would never have them and just have the garbage we're stuck with now. From Madonna to GaGa the music industry is a sick, sick corporate entity that is trying to kill our culture,
@nat00ben06 My bf and I were watching One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest a while ago and talked about how the actors looked like real mental patients. If that movie was done now, Ben Affleck would play Jack Nicholson's charactor, Keanu Reeves would probably be the Indian, and so on! (But, women have come a long way in that regard. Notice Nurse Ratched and her minion were both attractive. Even the old night nurse was Hollywood thin.)
@nat00ben06 yeah, time was that with musical performances .. the most important was the musical performance! now it seems to be who can dance the best who has the best costume and who has made the most generic crap song imaginable.

@Moarphine quit being so fucking close minded get a wider selection of music S&G are dope as fuck. and "dey r dum hippos" you couldnt write music 0.5% as good as these "dum hippies" and they did it while stoned open your mind and close your mouth
@Moarphine haha... now everybody this here is a good example of society as it is today.
1. terrible job at spelling.
2. black people jargon (I'm not being rascist!)
3. and no respect for MUSIC.
How do you live life with no music? Oh you tell me you do listen to music like 50 cent and Eminem......hahaha, well it's not music. This is a perfect example of music. Along with mozart and beethoven and bach. WHAT! YOU DON"T KNOW WHO BEETHOVEN AND MOZART AND BACH ARE?????????
Child Ballad #2 a version of a tune and tale called, 'The Elfin King'....Parsley, Sage, Rosemany and Thyme is a love potion. It is the story of a woman who doesn't want to marry this man because he is an elf, so she gives him impossible tasks....For more verses of this tune check out, Scarborough Faire at:
@MoorOfDundee, thank you for sharing that with us. I remember back in college learning in Art History about it being an old troubadour song or something. That was a long time ago. Sounds like a good love potion and equally delicious on root veggies. I will be checking out the verses. Again, thank you. Lovely song in any era.
@MrChristopher1964 - that's a fascinating comment. Can you say more about 1/3 octave harmony and using the guitar as a counterpoint vocal? You're expressing some musical concepts I'd like to understand.
Growing up in Korea, I didn't understand the lyric of their songs, but I spent countless hours listening to their songs. They are truly special artists to me...my sincere thanks to Paul and Art.

its not celtic..its an old british ballad actually, and it is from the late 1600's, not the 1400's..

@lumpyplop
Actually, it probably is Celtic in origin. The song is allegedly adapted from an old Scottish tune "The Elfin Knight" depicting impossible love.

Alot of people thought they wrote the music. Its an old Celtic song from the 1400s. S&G just made it modern.

Amazing that a duet can be sung live with exactly 1/3rd octave harmony throughout the song; including the guitar acting as a counter-point vocal.
Truly : incredible
MrChristopher1964 1 year ago
@MrChristopher1964 - that's a fascinating comment. Can you say more about 1/3 octave harmony and using the guitar as a counterpoint vocal? You're expressing some musical concepts I'd like to understand.
Thanks!

Growing up in Korea, I didn't understand the lyric of their songs, but I spent countless hours listening to their songs. They are truly special artists to me...my sincere thanks to Paul and Art.

i love this song
it is as beautiful as a nice warm day with the cold breeze embracing you, making your heart warm.
the sweetness of both voices makes me shiver and a million memories pass trough my mine.
and i find my true love eyes fighting the rain, exactly where i left him. as far from my heart as he decided to be.
but the song is precious.
it makes you close your eyes and day dream about the past and the future and the years to come.
