As you are mentioning the crash on March 5, 1945....
this area was a part of the famous Kurland Pocket that was defended by Waffen SS ( German and many Baltic soldiers), the Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe till the end of the war.
Only surrendered after VE day...took out a lot of the Red Army before.
@rampking1 The Kurland pocket was in Latvia and contained the remnants of those troops which previously had been beseiging Leningrad.
This was part of the 'Baltic platform'. In February 1945 the Soviets reached the Oder river and crossed it in front of Berlin (Seelow Heights position). This was a large bulge to the west, this part of Pomerania was still held by the Germans but with the Soviets pressing hard from the south.

@alanheath Thanks...I thought you were further east. Perhaps I was thinking of another one of your films.
This Baltic platform I believe Hitler thought would come to Berlin's rescue at the end.
