  • This guy is so funny!

  • I'm attending a Java programming class at my own university, but I'm secretly following this instead. I'm already way ahead of the local class.

  • I feel so smart about programming Karel now......ha!

  • I cant import the acm.graphics.* files or the programs :\

  • @zeejenkins Hi zeejenkins you'll need to first install acm.jar read the instructions at facwiki(dot)cs(dot)byu(dot)edu

  • @gardenstateboss Thank you sir :)

  • ...erect brains

  • Computer-science like the page facebook

  • man he writes fast....

  • In a world where knowledge is the most valuable resource, those giving it away for free are the true kings.

Thank you Stanford, Sequoia Capital and Mehran for making this excellent material available for the benefit of advancing knowledge for everyone. I commend you and shall hold you in ultimately high regard from now on.

    A home educated software engineer.

  • Why can't I just be in college now? Two years away is two years too far away.

  • Amazing the change in computers in about 40 years...

  • Why am I watching this if I'm 14? Oh yeah. I'm a hopeless nerd

  • If only Stanford could give me a degree for watching these videos, lmao.

  • @xVerbati

but that would make a Stanford degree worthless

  • import java.awt.Color; fixes problem with last program -))) nice lecture

  • who said iranians and americans can't get along - awesome lectures from stanford

  • @doctorHOUSE check most of the computer science vids! Most are indian! Very smart people!

  • This guy is awesome!

  • 10:00

  • why would anyone dislike these

  • great lectures Mehran Sahami!

thanx! made programming a lot easier for me!

  • wow, a great stuff. But still eclipse is just a IDE and javac is the compiler used by java..

  • @gunamustlearn Right! Strange error!

  • what does he throw at the students?

  • @spaceboy2686 He throws candy.

  • @spaceboy2686 rocks

  • @spaceboy2686 He throws bricks.

  • @spaceboy2686 You serious...? haven't you watch the first vid...?

  • "Do Do Doo Do Doo"

  • the program led to a fatal error.. do I need additional files to import those classes? 32:00

  • HAHAHHAHA this teacher throws you candy if you ask a question? Awesome

Also this course is way more instructional than MIT's equivalent

  • @smokenfly514 I agree, i watched the mit vids and i was a little lost

  • Thank you Stanford for providing this free of charge!

  • "It's small, it's tiny, it's fun, it's JAVA!" (c) Mehran Sahami :)

  • Mehran you Rock. Made my life so much easier. Thank you

  • I'm gonna study CS at Stanford NO MATTER WHAT.

  • h0w d1d th1$ 3v3n g3t 127m094 v1ew$? $0 b0r1ng

  • @PONY4LYFEHAHDERP cocaine is a hell of a drug.

  • @rondinsk dude i dont even do cocaine iam not that kind of person

  • @rondinsk LOL

  • Thank you Stanford :D

  • I love these lectures

  • Excellent Teaching on object-oriented programming using Java classes

  • This is the best introduction to programming that I have seen ever!

  • Prof. Sahami is an excellent instructor and we are so lucky to be able to see his classes worldwide. Fascinating!

  • God, I made it to the 4th Lecture so far.. Its only been one day to. (Trying to watch as many as I can per day.) I must finish them all!

  • I have no background in a class like this - my undergrad was in Spanish and Psychology. But I really enjoy this class! Thank you so much for putting this online for free Stanford! and thanks Mehran!

  • Nice

  • Nice

  • I keep getting "Workspace does not contain a main type (do you have a public void run () method?) " when i try to run a program on eclipse, what am I doing wrong?

  • @iBaconNinja java programs start from main method. try this

    public class HelloWorld { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println("Hello World"); }

    }

in this video they use applet. i think it doesn't need main.

  • Does this guy remind anyone else of Stifflers dad?

  • this is how they teach at stanford? i'm not saying it's not effective but just get a book, much faster.

  • Has anyone done the Karel assignment - I can't figure out how to do problem 4 with an the 40x40 world, but I got it to work with the other ones.

  • @TheBillybobish how did u solve the 4th one for other worlds

  • @TheBillybobish hey man I solved that one, i'm stuck on the 1x8 >.<

  • Comment removed

  • @TheBillybobish did you start by checkering a row or column?

  • Gordan Freeman?

  • After all the searching....Mehran makes oop simple.

  • hahaha we are just erect brains

  • Super Karel AWAY!

  • I feel increasingly awesome as the views for each successive video decrease.

  • @MrJohnthedoe The views for each video decrease because many people don't have the discipline to watch a course online. They give up too quickly. There is no relation with the quality of the lectures.

  • @MrJohnthedoe

you shouldn't, because others could have started more advanced things after seeing the first three videos.

  • Thanks Mehran!

  • thanks Stanford. I learned so much! I truly wish I able to attend your college!

  • @warnexus not with that english you wont...

  • Awesome lecture! He sure could save a great deal of chalk if he would put those programming skills to use and use a little power point for his presentation. lol

  • @kryptonianninja Good point! (No pun intended!!)

  • I have no idea why I'm watching this. I've been programming for 8 years in multiple languages. I should be writing software right now. But this guy... is so cool. I can't stop watching ;_;

    Stanford Ftw!

  • 34:34 saving spot

  • Thumbs up if you were NOT taught like this (i.e. good) in your local University.

  • eleven people can't use carel. lol

  • @chaneyambeau09 One person can't spell Karel. lol =)

  • @dman10345 tell me about it. lol OMG.

  • @chaneyambeau09 And your one of them ^^ yay for making it 1/1

  • @dman10345 thx lol

  • god this guy just talks and talks and talks! I dunno if the cs is right for me

  • @noyan1109 Dude, its normal that he just talks. He talks, you listen, thats how it works!

  • @aartje9 well that's my point, he should explain everything to the last unnecessary detail, and you just gotto listen and learn. I have no prob. with the professor; he's great, but maybe cs isn't

  • @noyan1109 Ow, ok. Thought you ment the guy is bad... It's ok :)

  • I've heard of lot of the history here! I feel smart!

  • I'm having trouble running eclipse on my mac. After downloading I try to run and I am "unable to acces jarfile startup.jar"

I have a mac 10.6.6 and have done the system updates, so I believe I have everything needed. It just won't run

  • There are Mac;s, PC's, Linux's computers.... someone tell this guy Linux is an OS, not the type of a computer.

  • @benderbg Well, neither Eclipse is a compiler...

  • @benderbg PCs != Windows >.> though american people are so brainwashed that they view Linux as OMGYOUCANHACKWITH3CODELINES

  • Everytime I watch one of these lectures I get a craving for chocolate xD. Sahami is an amazing prof, I am a high school student and he makes everything simple for me to grasp. Thanks so much for posting this Standford.

  • He's not sure if we know what a font is, yet he's teaching this stuff? I'm lost. I just want to know how to like detect a key on the keyboard and stuff. Like when you press D, move.

  • @TheXRealXBrapp KeyListener - look it up

  • My dog's a mammal but doesnt have sweat glands.

  • This guy has messed up on several accounts.

JAR files are actually compressed files like .zip that have lots of .class files and manifest information. Where the fuck comes the linker ? He is totally messing up architecture.

  • it is a shame that they dont got HD...

  • stanford is an awesome universety! and even if it wasn't, i would go there for the candy :D

  • the full course material is available as a > 200 mb download or individually, google "see.stanford.edu/see/materials/icspmcs106a/software.aspx"

  • First of all I would like to say that I cant get enough of these videos. Mehran is an excellant professor, made me wish I had gone to Stanford. I would like to know how to get my created worlds to show up in eclipse. I saved the world in its own folder and restarted eclipse and then tried to import it but all I get is the folder but not the java file to import. what am i doing wrong.

  • this is java! java? THIS IS C++!!! [insert hate comment here]

  • @debit256 this isn't C++ >.>

  • @IAMDISAPP0INT you missed the point, thats why your a disappointment, u bitchass

  • @debit256 it's *you're, and second of all what do you mean missed the point? if you were being sarcastic that still makes no sense what so ever. and you won't ever win an argument calling someone names, like "bitchass" for example.

  • @IAMDISAPP0INT there is the word point in disappointment and i dont waste my time fixing my grammar like a bitchass

  • @debit256 dude you're making no sense at all, are you like 9 or something? go back to school

  • @IAMDISAPP0INT maybe you need to go back to school to get a social life so you can understand what im saying you bitchass loser

  • @debit256 you're still making no sense, are you in junior high?

  • @IAMDISAPP0INT are you a pedophile?

  • @debit256 ok yes you are in junior high, thank you for proving that

  • @IAMDISAPP0INT I'm asking if you are one because you keep indirectly asking me about my age. I'm in college btw you dumbass, why else would i be watching this shit? the point that you missed is the joke, if you saw the movie 300, you would understand.

  • @debit256 im in college also, but i don't speak like some junior high kid. you need to learn that all those things you did in junior high were meant to be grown out of, they're childish. asking your age has nothing to do with pedophilia. and calling people "dumbass" and cursing all the time won't get you anywhere, just make you look angry and make your age look as if it's just now entering the double digits. Good Day.

  • @IAMDISAPP0INT I dont need a tool to tell me how to behave ONLINE. do understand that there is a difference in people on the internet than ones in reallife

  • @debit256 o so you're telling me you only curse online and act like a "tough guy" because im probably hundreds of miles away and you know i can't do anything about it right? ok thanks for making that clear.

  • @IAMDISAPP0INT I dont have courtesy towards people online, especially retarded ones like you who dont get jokes, nuff said. okay thanks. and your gay, thanks for making that clear.

  • @debit256 you see? you're proving to me all you can do to defend yourself is call people names. now you're saying im gay and retarded. who's the retarded one here? i haven't called you one name and yet you're enraged. and a lil fyi, im actually 15 :) you just got owned by a 15 year old

  • @IAMDISAPP0INT You must be 15, cause you can't read shit. im explaining how im not acting like a tough guy, just that i dont have courtesy for online people. in addition to how stupid you are for not getting that simple joke from the movie 300.

  • @debit256 rofl! i rest my case HAHA! just keep cursing and see how much it accomplishes. idiots like you think if u curse a lot you'll win, WRONG! i just proved that. im not speaking to you anymore i've already made my point, not reading anything else from you. Good Day :)

  • @IAMDISAPP0INT you only read what you want to read, grow up you dickwad and face the fact that your an idiot

  • @debit256 it's *you're not "your", who's the idiot here? and yup you're cursing some more, keep it up. And why did i respond although i said i wouldn't? this is too fun! lulz. and what do you mean i read what i want to read? it's obvious i read everything you have been saying, you're making up stuff now to try and counter me and it's failing miserably. if i gets to the point that you're making stuff up than it's just pathetic. ok seriously i'm done embarrassing you now.

  • @IAMDISAPP0INT

Hurr durr, i have no valid points to start my arguments so i have to dig at this guys spelling to make me seem smarter.

  • This teacher is awesome. I wish I had such an energetic lecturer.

  • Thank You

  • Im really liking these lessons, I can understand everything I do, and I really wanted to learn java programing, not to mention I really like this teacher. Thank you Stanford :D

  • 9 people don't like Karel. or java. or programming. or computers.

    :(

  • Gooogled it, no find, figured out, so I share with u all! :)

    HOW TO: ACM.stuffffffThingies package:

Google Java Task Force and go to their homepage, scrolldown to u see acm.jar, download! put the jar file (don't unzip it!) wherever.

Go to eclipse - right click ur java project thingy on the left - "build path" - "add external archives..." - and find ur acm.jar! :D

After this, life will be good, happy times! This thing bugged me, hoped it helped someone! :)

  • @Thymonico the newest / bug fix version of acm.jar is here: ww w-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/~eroberts/jtf/index.html

  • @Thymonico Thanks would not have figured out without your note here.

  • @Thymonico

Thank you! I found the "jar" but didn't know what to do with it!

  • @Thymonico thanks i got the acm jar

  • I love this teacher, he talks loud (GOOD THING) and he's funny

  • Oh I really like your video. Thank you for sharing.

  • this is so awesome thank you stanford

  • if i have seen further, it is by standing on YOUR shoulders professor Mehran. thank you for making your education available and free (and fun) to all.

  • wait... why did he assume I'm human? HE WAS WRONG! ☺

  • Nice. But note that eclipse isn't a compiler, is an IDE. javac is the compiler used by eclipse.

  • @joaomrpereira actually eclipse has its own java compiler, independent of javac. So you can compile java programs using eclipse with only the java runtimes. To prove this to yourself, compile using eclipse compiler from commandline, from eclipse plugin folder copy org.eclipse.jdt.core.XXX.jar to your java code folder. For ease of typing rename eclipse compiler jar to ejc.jar. To compile your .java using eclipse compiler, from cmd.com> java -jar ecj.jar -cp .;acm.jar myprogram.java

  • @dacherx Yes, you totally right.

  • Finally! someone actually teaching java in a way you can understand!

  • cleaning a black board looks fun

  • Comment removed

  • Just starting this video and can't wait...too bad there aren't more professors like him. He makes learning fun.

  • Who would give a negative vote to this set of videos????

  • @Twistx77 MIT prof

  • @Twistx77 He goes kinda fast for beginners. People get annoyed. I know a bit of programming and thats why I am watching and actually learning but I don't think I could have been able to keep up if I were a complete newb.

  • @MJFAN666 Well you might be right but if you compare him to the teachers I've had for programming... you would think this guy is a god :)

  • @Twistx77 cery true. I am taking computer science in grd. 12 this semester and I have a terrible teacher. This guy is leggit.

  • @Twistx77 someone who wasn't accepted to the school, lol.

  • Great lecture!!!

  • Great Professor & Great Course .. thanks Stanford

  • i like the teacher. he is very well spoken

  • Anyone noticed that he always says "Okay?" xD

I find that kind of funny ^^

  • You would think that a prestigous institution such as Stanford with well-off alumni would be able to change that antiquted, annoying, and outdated chalk board.

  • @dnarasimham1 Espescially in a computer class haha.. you would think he would have a promethean board

  • Holy crap he missed a candy!!

  • @austintrojans yeah i noticed that and ws like SHIT!! HOW!! WHY?? pook kid must be feeling all depressed n shit.

  • Isn't Mac based on linux?

  • @xMjhsx A somewhat common misconception. Mac OS and Linux are both based on Unix. So they're more like siblings, not directly based off of each other. Hope this helps!

  • Self-Education FTW!

  • Gr8 work Stanford and Prof. Shami.

This is really gr8 thing for ones who dnt have the opportunity join Stanford

  • Beeper :)

  • How do i get the acm .graphics???

  • @mynamegoeshere10

Since youtube doesn't allow posting links, please do a browser search on "Java Task Force" and click its Home Page link. That webpage will give you full ACM Java Task Force (JTF) access, including its JAR files.

However, if you're only interested in the CS106A ACM JTF, do a browser search on "CS106A assignments" and download its ZIP files. CS106A assignments are designed for Eclipse.

  • @kstahmer hey thanks for repling, but when i do that i downloda acm.jar and i go to import in eclipse i can't seem to import it into eclipse

  • @mynamegoeshere10

When I did a CS106A Assignment2.zip download and imported it into Eclipse that worked. Well, for me anyway. Specifically, "import acm.graphics.*" works in my Java source code.

Perhaps, we're discussing different things. In cyberspace, that can never be taken for granted.

  • I was actually in the class you can see me in lecture one, believe me professor Sahami taught me very well!

  • This guy is really awesome

  • chocolates/candies awesome too

  • Thanks!

  • This guy is awesome.. :D

  • @achilles198585 the Sumerians did...

  • Chinese civilization is the earliest surviving inventor of abacus...

  • @achilles198585 yeah dude we got you the first time..
