you guys assume that the M3 is US spec. Depending on the year of that M3, it either has the S50B30(286bhp) or the S50B32(321bhp), and not the crappy US spec s50/s52. I'm not surprised that the M3 pulled away. Plus, european M3's, at least the later models, came with 6 speed transmissions.

The 850ci from 1989 has 296bhp, the 1992 850csi has 380bhp and then 1996 850ci makes 322bhp.

The euro M3 evo version makes 321bhp with its 3.2 litre engine. The 3 litre one makes 286bhp, and there is even a rare GT model which makes 295bhp.

There is a significant weight difference between the M3 and the 850. The 850 weighs alot more. It may have a V12 but it doesnt exactly shout about it.

Hey Krazy kanuk. You can tell by your vin# where the car you have was tuned. If the # starts with the letters WBS, it is a BMW motorworks , or M, tuned car. If it starts with WBA, it a BMW AG car.

Sorry, but the E92 M3 had 4.0 v-8, with over 400 hp, and 326 ft Lb of torque. The E31 850 CSI has only 375 hp and 334 ft lb of torque. So, pretty even. The 850 was M division tuned, and so is basically an M8. The only prototype M8 ever built, was not considered safe for road use, having 550 hp, and was destroyed by BMW. Sad.

yeah the 850 has a v12 when the m3 only has an inline 6.. but twice the motor also means twice the weight. you also need to keep in mind even the 850csi which was tumed by bmw M devision only has about 396HP. This may be an 850i or ci which only have a respectable 295 and 322 HP.. Compare the weight to HP ratio of the M3 and this and this would be destroyed. Hence the M3 pulling ahead so fast.

sorry to contradict, but a 3.0 E36 has it in 6.5. The manual 850 (300hp) takes 6.8, but that's because the driver shifts into 3rd at around 93km/h. If you let it into 2nd, tests have shown it takes approx. 6.5. The CSI suffers from the same problem, but trust me, that car is equal to the E39 M5. Waay too underappreciated these 8 series are:(... And not all lies in the 0-100 race. After 160, there are 5s 0-100cars which struggle against an automatic, 7.4s 0-100 850. The mustang GT is an example!

hmm... 'don't know where I had that in mind, I checked it and yeah... Only thing is you need to get past 0-100km/h, once you are at speed, weight begins to make no difference, and so does torque, the only things that begin to matter are power and drag. The e36 has I think around 0.35 Cw? The 8 series has an ultra low 0.29 Cw, that's why from a standstill they don't jump out, but once in high gear, they blast many good 0-100 cars.

Please do look at the Mustang GT for example, it does 0-60 in 5.5, but top speed is about 240km/h. The Impreza also manages the sprint in 5.5, but tops out short of 250km/h. What I am trying to say is 0-60 and power/weight don't always define a car. Think about the heavy M6, which tops 200mph, which is faster than the 997 911 turbo, or the F430. And furthermore, most 4-5-6s 0-100 cars require 2 changes to reach 100km/h, the 8 is penalized with 3 changes. But all are great cars, nonetheless!

This is probly a 4 spd automatic, and it has 296hp/332trq inless it's 95 or higher(US specs), 95+ has 322hp/361trq and a 5 spd auto. A 95+ might have gave this m3 a run, or the rare 850csi with 372hp/402trq/6spd would definetly give it a run. If you really wanna give this m3 a run against this v12 than get the aplina b12 e38 with 430hp/443 trq. But even an older 850i is still better than e36 m3 in some regards, for high speed cruising, 850 would hold 200km/h no problem, e36 m3... maybe 160km/h.

I love my M3, and would have liked to see the end of the race. And, how fast they were going, before that bend? I remember drooling over the 850Csi as a kid though, and still think the car is one great looking ride. I also drooled over the M cars, and feel lucky to have one. A newer one that is. The old M's just don't have the timeless good looks of the 8 series. Cool race though, and the 8 didn't go easy.

Screw the 850i man; even the 850i 6spd. Trust me. I love the 850 to death and really want to get one, but there's a high probability you'll pay dearly in upkeep. I bought a 2005 Mercedes CLK500 with a 7spd. auto, pillarless B ofcourse, for $28k with 34k miles. I'm glad I went with the Merc. Try to find a used CLK550 which has 380hp. I'm sure you won't regret it. Even my CLK500 w/ 300hp goes like stink. The 500s are pretty cheap too.
