  • @jandogg1955 I most assuredly did not grow up in the 60's , I did however have parents that got stuck in that era. I am eternally grateful that I grew up listening to classics such as this, but to be fair I do enjoy some of today's music as well. I think that it is all about keeping an open mind and letting everyone enjoy what they wish... although the draw of "rap" still alludes me.

  • Ohh Yes,Ass Kickin'!

  • great song great vidio stan

  • Outstanding!!!

  • The good old times.

  • Jeugd herinneringen...

  • love this song too.is beautifull.

  • Why can't some of you be nice about your comments? You don't need to say F this and F you. Not everybody likes ALL of the music ever recorded! We all have our likes & dislikes. If you didn't grow up with the sixties music, you don't know JACK!!! It was the best & will always be the best. Please be civil to one another.

  • boy aint he hot

  • I was a 15 and sang it all the time...... tried to sneak out to go to woodstock but got caught and put on house lock down.. what a year that was.

  • takes me back....great!

  • takes me to my childwood

  • Looks like they are playing Hollywood Squares....bur it's a great song....!!!!

  • Wow, the memories....

  • I love this song as much now as I did when I first heard it. I was 9 years old then, back in 1969. Today I'm 51 and understand the lyrics completely. But when I sing it to myself, I still sing it the way I did when i was 9!! lololo

  • A side note: both Tetteroo and keyboardist Hans Van Eijk were openly gay. Likely, then, our Peter was really singing about "mon bel ami" and not "ma belle amie"!

  • do you hear Paul McCartney? 2:24 is second time he sings

i thot this was Joe Cocker witjh a diff band!

  • "There was a time that you thought that your only friend was me" This line reminds of my junior high days in Palms California. I met this new kid that all the other kids made fun of because of his arab decent. I befriended him and acted as his mentor. He would repeat that line to me "There was a time that you thought..." Looking back on those days I remember that boy more than the other so called cool kids.

Bigotry is... and will never be cool!!

  • Man, they sure put the camera right up in his face. Great song!

  • i love this song

  • I was in first year high school, 1969, in Taft High School, Chicago, ILL, when this came out. A great memory.

  • I love how he sings "you were dee answer" Very cute. Probably from leaning it in English

  • @kirbygene

You are right. It is even more likely they didn't know English, not an uncommon thing. (See the Norwegian pop band A-ha, and the early English records of Celine Dion.) I didn't know they were Dutch, though; I had always thought they were French, since they couldn't pronounce the "the". (And my mother is Dutch, and I didn't spot it.)

Sadly, lead singer Peter Tetteroo died in September 2002 from liver cancer, at the age of 55

  • i love this song,...memories,dreams,and that they mey come true...xx femke

  • wow man i have to to thank you i have been looking for this fucking song for over 10 years man oh man this brings back some good times back in my life i have only heard is about 5 times but never knew what the fuck it was call i always thought it was called my brother and me lmfao again thanks for the upload good to know some people have some real music in them real music cheers bro

  • Looks like I offended some fruitcake! Ha ha!

  • This is such nerdy gross stuff. Did people really listen to this crap?

  • @Vyskochkova1 okay grumps :) it was a grrrrrrrrrrreat song. when I was 17. (another great song by Janice Ian)

try smiling there grumpy and open up your heart and ears.

  • He is rejoicing the fact that she is leaving him for another man, and that he is sure she will come back. Would any man say that today if they had been in the same shoes?

  • @typesAlot.....how do you remember this if you were a baby?

@milindoe She took drugs so what do you expect. She was not a lily white angel. She was off her rocker.

@marsdexter Amy was not right in the head.

  • This was the first record (45) I bought as a kid! It was great....Was It Macca on harmony?? Conflicting reports so who knows.

  • I was a young girl when this song came out, but always loved it. It's one of those very unforgettable songs & I'm so glad to have found it here. Still, after all these years is a wonderful song. Thank you for sharing this song.

  • @SCS0922 i was young also , time flies ! it was august- september 69 that this lovely song hits the charts

it became in 70 a huge hit in the states , but in 69 we were all crazy about tee set and shocking blue

it was the time that we discovered the girls and girls us :-))))

that time getting a kiss from a girl was heaven on earth , now i get the feeling that the young ones are not happy

walking on street , showing a sad face , i am happy i had the chance living that time

  • Rest in peace, Peter Tetterroo. Thanks for singing a great song.

  • this song played all summer at my beach nearby Roma in 1969 ,i was just a child but still remember it. Didn't hear it for 40 years!

  • ahh, My beautiful Amy! sounds alot like Macca on "I'm in love with you"...

  • Now this is dedicated to Amy Winehouse.

  • @Christina5Archer -- Pfffth...Amy Winehouse was a loser who CHOSE to act in a manner that ended in her death. I wouldn't dedicate a thing to her.

  • @milindoe You do not have any call or right to say such things about someone who has died. Judge not. How would you like somebody to talk like that about you after you have died?

  • @Christina5Archer Does that mean he has no call or right to say such things about the likes of Osama bin Laden, or Adolf Hitler?

  • LOVE it, God what memories....

  • What does the term "Ma Belle Amie" mean?

  • @MrThinkingSmart - It means "My beautiful friend."

  • @MrThinkingSmart

    My beautiful friend.

  • I like the part, "for the man after him waits here", on the high harmony part it sounds just like young Paul McCartney.

  • Great song.

  • LOVE this song! I was just a baby when it came out, and remember it well. NEver saw the guy who sang it until Youtube. Doesn't he look a lot younger than his voice sounds? I would have guessed this was done by someone in their late 30s-early 40s and was shocked when I saw the actual singer!

  • @TypesALot agreed

  • @TypesALot Hey thays Howard Stern on drums from 1:25 -- 1:29

  • One of my very favorites from that era..Catchy and a GREAT song period.

  • Instrumentation was really good, very creative, and a good mix also.

  • i havnt heard this 1 in iver 30years

  • I was in Den Haag/Holland where the Tee Set had a night club in Scheveningen. They were big in The world at the time.Wonder what happened to the members of the Tee Set?Anyone know?

  • i love this song. i remember hearing it when I was almost seven in 1969. I would smile everytime it came on the radio in southern minnesota/northern iowa, usa. Love the lyrics and the happiness of the song.

  • I LOVE this song! He has a wonderful voice.

  • I sang this song at the Windsor Rock Festival (Ontario Canada) with my band in the summer of 1971. We won the "Battle of the Bands" that year. A great memory, and a great song. Thank you, Holland ( Visited Amsterdam in '76..loved it).

  • This was just one of those singles one HAD to buy. And it took time getting to DK. So we had to sit and wait for it on the very bad reception of Radio Luxembourg. The kids today don't know how lucky they are with music television, the internet etc... haha... I was 12 when this came out. I still love it!!

  • What a great song! I was initially drawn to this song because I thought it was Paul McCartney providing those great backing vocals on the chorus. I was in sixth grade when this came out and had the 45 single. Wonderful memories...

  • Great memories!

  • what a great song and video cheq out the baby faced peter tetteroo the lead singer of the band tee set who sadly died of liver cancer in 2002.the band was formed in the netherlands and had this hit 'Ma Bell Amie' in 1969 it sold over 1 million copies in america.

  • Oh yeah, this song takes me back!

  • Love this song and heard it thousands of times sing 1969 and this is the first time i have ever seen what the band looked like!!!Thanks 4 this blast from the past :-)

  • God has given you a wonderful gift- that voice! One of my all time favorite songs.

  • That old expression, 'one man's drink is another man's poison" would apply here for me. I heard this song on the radio the other day. It was out when I was in high school and I always hated it. I looked on here to see the lyrics, for they never made any sense. See the group perform it makes it even more irritating. We had the dutch invasion of lousy songs back then. It reminds me of that other wretched Dutch/English song, How Do You Do?

  • @beentheredonethatb4 Interesting to see, but my oh my...this is soooo square and gay ,hated it then, don't like it now.Typical for Tetteroo ,to put people on the wrong feet, everyone thinking it was a male friend, yet 'amie' opposed to 'ami', is female...

Bythheway ...the only decent Dutch things that went big over there, were Venus & Radar Love.

  • Comment removed

  • I always loved a wide baritone voice like this guy's. There was such a long spell where it was all about how high a male singer could screech.

Gorgeous song - haunting, in a sweet, but still masculine way - it came out at a very trying time in my life and was a comfort and an inspiration. Thanks, Tee-Set!!

  • i am 51 years old a blast from the pass love it

  • Here's your forgotten oldie.

  • It's funny ... I didn't know anything about the group, although I liked the song. Probably because of the French in the lyric, I assumed they were from Quebec. :LOL ... sorry about that. Still love the song. :)

  • cool song

  • HEy and greetings from the US of A! I am 52 and believe it or not -I heard this song for the very first time about two weeks ago on New York City's WCBS FM's Dick Bartley show and was mesmerized! Dug up an old CD compilation and found your song on it...I find myself playing that wonderful song over and over...You guys were fantastic! I wish you guys would release a CD with all you music over here!

  • I called my little girl Bellamy and a family friend told me about this song, so I looked it up. Now I love it and I sing it to her all the time. Her little eyes light up and she sings along too ♥

  • I called my little girl Bellamy and a family friend told me about this song, so I looked it up. Now I love it and I sing it to her all the time. Her little eyes light up and she sings along ♥

  • I was a very young girl when this was a huge Hit.And I was already fascinated by all the music and the bands. In fact The album From Tee Set where this song was on was one of the first LP's I ever bought!I still have it! And realise what lovely songs and music this band madeTHANKS guys for the youth-memories!PS;Wonder what you guys did after the band split up?About Hans we al know and see him on TV every now and then, but what about the rest of you guys?

    Love and Greets from Amsterdam.Bianca

  • This is absolutely my favorite song ever! I've always wondered...did Peter speak English, or was he singing the words phonetically?

  • i just googled the question, did Did paul mccartney sing backup vocals in the the tee set song ma belle amie

Did paul mccartney sing back up on Ma Belle Amie and it said yes

  • @joeyjosephs I KNEW it sounded like Paul ! And I was a little surprised at how young the singer looks, he has an older guy voice.

  • So cool!! I've been looking for this song on youtube for about 4 years. So glad I found it finally!! So when i think of being 8 years old in 1969 I was listening to pop radio. And this song was on the charts that year. And this song was burned into my memory. It has that magical ability to bring me back to '69- '70 period of my life. Now i always pictured some black dude singing this. So it was cool to see you guys since the main singer resembles me significantly at my college age in '80-'85

  • I love how much pride was taken in dressing....love the song, the outfits, the sound.

  • sorry..one of my favorite songs growing up I was 8 in 1969 I'd forgotten about it..never SAW the band til now how awesome!!

  • thank youuuu! That was one ogf

  • what does the french parts mean? Love the song, but never fully understood the meaning & words lol

  • @Demonickitten666

"After all the good days I say thank you, thank you"

  • I was in high school when this tune came out. I love the whole song but my favorite part is that guitar chord at the end of the song. Beautiful! I play guitar now and I've learned this song..., cool. I get to strum that nice chord at the end. Yeah!

  • @libraryquiet ,Thanks for your replay I'm glad you like the song and that you play the guitar like I do,

and that you like the nice cord at the end, keep on playing. ....Dihl Bennink guitarist of ''Ma belle amie''

  • @mabelleamie Oh my!! Your the original guitarist for The Tee Set?!! MAN!..., for real?!!! What an honor this is for me! This indeed is an honor!! That song was a big part of my developing years! So many great memories. I can't believe it! It's really you?! The one who plays that beautiful guitar in this song! I'm over the moon right now! THANK YOU! I'm listening to the song right now..., hold it.., here it comes.., that last chord...,mmmmm, just BEAUTIFUL!! Thank you. God Bless you.

  • @libraryquiet It's a D7 chord right?

  • @libraryquiet - Hey! Send me the chords please!

  • @libraryquiet Me too, was in high school when this tune came out, such a great classic..

  • I would love to own this song... how can I acquire a copy?

  • This takes me back. I was 14 years old when this came out, terrified because I was starting Junior High School right out of a Catholic grade school. And I always thought it was Paul McCartney singing "I'm in love with you !"

  • @Rustina61 i grow up with this song too LOL, and i thought it was John and Paul hahaha

  • A cutting edge ballad if there ever was one, timeless.

  • I love this song & I'm fifteen (: my mommy used to sing to me <3

  • Hi, Dihl,

We have a dog named Bella and we sing this to her all the time. Thanks! - Chad

  • this band was a one hit wonder !Dihl thank you so much for putting this on youtube !

  • Love this song! And it still holds up after all these years. I was 9 when it came out. The way the video was shot is also very contemporary. Everyone else at that time was doing all the groovy psychedelic lighting and such. THis could have been taped last week. Thank you, Dihl Bennink!

  • I was 9 in 1969 and this was one of my favorite songs at that time. It still holds up today. Great song.

  • Wow I was 11 in 69 when this song came out.... I started out smiling and by the end of the song I was crying lol. Where has my life gone... To all the young ppl reading this... Life goes so much faster than you think, don't waste the time you have on this earth, go for your dreams, take chances, don't get old and ever say I wish I had done this or that, just go for it!

  • @gurn58 you were Peter Tetterro's first and last blowjob I heard.

  • I liked it then and I still like it now. It was a fair sized hit in New Zealand in 1969.

  • This was a great song at the end of the 1960's. It is sad that the lead singer Peter Tetteroo died of liver cancer in 2002, at the age of 55.

  • Nobody knows?

  • I sooo love this song....please, what is he singing in french?

  • lekkere Hammond...

  • Above wanted to know who wrote Ma Belle Amie.. Peter Tetteroo / Hans Van Eijck

Peter is the lead and Hans the Keyboards.. FYI ENJOY

  • Pracht Nummer veel gedraaid tijdens een van mijn vele astma aamnvallen als kind ( dan dook ik altijd in mijn moeder's platen verzameling)

  • i like the melody.

  • who wrote the lyrics to this song? was it the tea set, or somebody else??

  • @VegaRocksTheRoses Hi Vega,Hans van Eijck wrote the lyrics, regards Dihl Bennink

  • @mabelleamie Great at the keys, and writing lyrics. Talented guy!

  • Hi Vega.. Peter Tetteroo / Hans Van Eijck / Peter is the lead and Hans is keyboards... they wrote this together. Reached 5 on the Billboard top in 1970

  • @VegaRocksTheRoses

    Peter Tetteroo with Dill Bennink

  • Love that Dutch rock!

  • This song is a great reminder of my sr year in high school. Great song, great time.

  • When this came out, this and "Venus" were presented as "two new songs by Dutch groups." However, "Venus" has gone on to become a classic, while "Ma Belle Amie" has basically been forgotten.

  • He's dead. Died of liver cancer when he was 55 in 2002.

  • This is the first time I saw the lead singer's face...This is not what I would have pictured. He sounds like he's much older.

  • Indeed, such an uplifting tune. Almost church-like, dig it! PS as kid (when it was new) I SWORE Paul Mccartney was background singing.

  • @1961slam I thought that was Paul, too! Coulda sworn.......

  • What great memories this song relives. Great song!!

  • good old tune.

  • The man after "him" waits here. It simply means that HE is waiting to be the next boyfriend. I always assumed he was singing to a girl.

  • Groovey tune!!!

  • one the greatest pop songs of all time.. the floor tomms .the mccartney bass, the handclaps. all perfect. fuck

  • proud to be dutch

  • This song makes you want to go out and march for gay rights .

  • @hanksnow82 the hell is that suppose to mean unless im totally missing the meaning which could actually be about two men?

  • @chewylikesit This song was about a guy falling in love with another guy

  • @hanksnow82 figures but fuck it its still an awesome song

  • @hanksnow82 If I'm not mistaken, belle amie is feminine gender in french, so the lyrics refer to a beautiful female friend

  • @jetvent1 This is a gay anthem

  • @jetvent1 No, Belle amie is not feminine gender in French. amie is "friend", and Belle means "beautiful". Lyrics were kept gender neutral here on purpose, thank God. I'm also of the opinion that "Mary Mary (Take me across the water)" was written with a wink and a nudge, as "Mary" of course was the popular slang term gay men used for each other at that time.

  • @yandrsupreme WRONG! Sorry, but you don't know your French: "ami" is male friend, "amie" is female friend - do your research, enter "ami or amie" in Google and it will confirm this. This isn't a gay song so enough already, people!

  • @yandrsupreme

The lyrics are not gender neutral because it's not possible in French. Everything in French is either masculine or feminine, including inanimate objects. Ma belle amie is feminine construction. It means "my beautiful (female) friend." Mon bel ami is "my handsome (male) friend."

  • @yandrsupreme Not a chance. French doesn't have a neuter gender (a la German). Amie is friend (female). If it was to a guy, it would be "Bel (or Beau) Ami" and it would start with "mon", not "ma".

  • @jetvent1 Those damned Dutch. Learn your French people!! You're apparently still bugging people 43 years after the song was recorded. Not me because I think it's just a cute little ditty - I didn't worry about your French at the time. I stand corrected.

  • I'm 47 and this song is still the shit!

  • @Rifle56 Rofl. That was an amazing comment. Thank you for writing that!

  • OMG! I haven't heard this song in forever. I always loved it. I was about 7 when it came out (so, doing the math, that would have made my sisters 14 and 15).

    Thank you for posting this!

  • What was on the B side of this song? My brother had it and I was 6 when it came out. I remember listening to this and the other side (which was much more rockin)

  • @MrsKS1999 Angels coming in the holy night, this song is also on my site.

    Regards Dihl Bennink

  • @MrsKS1999 Angels coming in the holy night

  • @MrsKS1999 The B side was called "THE ANGELS COMING"

  • @MrsKS1999

    Actually a pretty good tune.

''ANGELS COMING IN THE HOLY NIGHT'', it's on YouTube

  • LUF IT ..IT'S SO GOOD TO SEE THESE GREAT DUTCH BUDDIES OF MINE..

.IN THIS GREAT VID...THANKS FOR SHARING DIHL...

...[ GOOD MEMORIES TOWARDS PETER AND MANAGER !! ] RICKY TEAL

  • A fat doob and this song makes all of the troubles of the world disappear!

  • Crap all these years I thought these guys were from Modesto hahahaha oh well I even knew a guy who told girls his cousin was in the band - aaahhhhhh the 70's

  • I like the lead singers style.

  • I can't believe how much I love this freakin' song. Even though some of the translation makes some of the words not exactly fit what he's trying to sing about. "Give the substitute a big cheer?" Can"t stop listening to it though. Thanks DIHL BENNINK!

  • @dmny05077

This great song is 41 YEARS OLD! I was just 13 and in junior high and I still love his voice, the beat, the sound and music. it just all worked together so well.

  • @OjaiRoy -- and we all thought we were so COOL back then, didn't we? With mutton chop sideburns, fringe hanging off everything, platform shoes. LOL

  • @milindoe

Holly smokes, you described me to the T!

  • @dmny05077 I imagine the lines 'Give the substitute a big cheer' and 'the man after him waits here' both refer to the boy she now loves and his 'broken heart'. Thanks for posting such a wonderful song for everyone on youtube to enjoy forever. I was 23 when that song hit the TOP 40 here in Australia and it sounds as good today as it did then! RIP Peter.

  • I truly think if the world woke up to this song every morning, the world would be a happier place!!!

  • Now that's some nice cowbell!

  • OK.. Stop the War...Im not Dutch..WTF is the name of the band? Cant find it on my jukebox

  • To @gcpotts1

Their name is TEE SET. Kapeesh?

  • TEE SET !!! well thats what my grandmother called peoples "PRIVATES" !!!

  • I was 19 in 69. This afternoon while at work Ma Belle Amie suddenly popped into my head. Had to google it. This song is such a feel good song.

  • @barbarajful It takes me back, even though I was only 8 in 1969. My older sisters had the 45 and I'd play it all the time. I've got the vinyl LP now.

  • adorablejaney, I saw the RIP for Peter. I really know nothing about this group. Is he no longer with us?

  • @lisaosfan sorry to report he (Peter Tetteroo, lead singer/frontman) died of cancer in 2002.

  • RIP Peter

  • Wow, I was listeing to an oldies ( I HATE that pharse) station yesterday and just got a bit of this song. I typed it in on Yahoo and it took me to this. I was about7 when this was released ansd haven't heard it for years. I've big a BIG music fan since the age of 3 and so alot of my schoolmates ( just a few years ago) were totally in the dark whe I would blet out a Beatle song or Paul Revere and the Raiders. Thank you for sharing this gem with us.

  • What's with the dutch and those turned up noses? It seems you can tell a dutchman by their funny noses!

  • @norjop same reson black people have big ass noses
