I first saw this production at the National Archives Film Division in College Park, MD USA as part of a documentary film "Call To Freedom" from 1956 by NBC. It should be a part of every class on European or World History. You can access the description online through the NARA Archival Research Catalog.
I've known about this show and wanted to see the whole thing for years! How did you get this copy of it? Can you put on any other clips? I'm particularly interested in any bits showing Seefried (we actually see her come out for the bow! So frustrating there isn't more!)
A tremendous performance. Dermota brings great dramatic flair to his solo segment. The only performance of this joyous finale that moves me like this one is the classic Vickers-Ludwig (Klemperer) recording.
This performance was the worst of the reopening performances and, by the way, the only one that isn´t released on a major label. Fr.o.Sch, Meistersinger, Aida all on Orfeo, Wozzeck on Andante. I don´t know about Giovanni. But this performance of Fidelio (and I do own about 20 seperate recordings) isn´t fine. Sorry
This great finale always moves me to tears; Karl Bohm is one of the greatest conductors of all time, and one of the last in the great German tradition. Thank you so much for posting this!
What a pleasant surprise 2 find there's video footage of this vaunted & legendary performance!

This video has been speeded up, which is often the case with old recordings (the short clips from Furtwänglers Salzburg-Fidelio for example).

Modl is as screamy as ever. Dermota substituted for Patzak and sang Don Ottavio next evening.

Fidelio is the best Ópera ever composed!
It's difficult to played because it's need 2 Basses, 2 barítonos, 2 soprannos and 3 tennors. And ALL, at least, GOOD.
I like this final, but preffer the Prisioner's first chorous ("Oh Welshe Lust").

I agree that Modl is a real drawback vocally, but Bohm's conducting is magnificent.
