even though I subjectively do not enjoy some of mr Gilliams films, your generalizations as to the merits of Mr Gilliams work can NOT be described as anything other than subjective.

If I had your intellectual reasoning I would say Brahms and Schumann, Picasso, or the Beach boys (suck) as they are all bits of art I don't yet get.

Whoever said Gilliam is a lame duck that thinks he is an auteur is an idiot, and has no idea what an auteur really is. An auteur is NOT just a craftsman, or a great film maker. An Auteur is a director with a unique and identifiable film making style that can be traced across all or most of their films. It's determined by either visual or thematic consistencies, or both.

The question is not whether Gilliam is an auteur or not, but whether he is an example of a good one.

And a close auteur analysis can help 'reveal' what a piece of work is saying, provided that the film maker is in fact an auteur and we haven't simply misread his work and imagined connections between his films that do not exist.

You are right that the individual work needs to be considered first and foremost, but there are other reading strategies that can help us understand what is being said.
