First of all thanks for uploading this video. My Father was probably standing on or near the head end of these cars as the PRR Electrical Engineer when this video was shot. It was called the Northeast Corridor Demonstration Project. The ultimate top speed they achieved was 163mph. These cars were modified Budd built Silverliner cars built in1962. The project was done in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Railroad and the US Department of Transportation. They were called DOT (Dee Oh Tee) Cars.
@trinityct where did you find this video? I've been doing research on the development of the Silverliners and Metroliners and have found quite a few images from the High Speed Demonstration project that showed video cameras present, but I've never seen any of the footage. The DOT cars were instrumented to measure forces and other data to gather information for the Metroliner design. They tested between Trenton & New Brunswick, and were based on a modified Budd Silverliner II design.
i think these were specially built Silverliner 3's..i can tell by the windows.. ur right they were for the US Department of transportation...and were designed for high speeds..i think they had disc brakes and air bag suspensions..i have a book with a section on these cars..they don't give the car type or info on them but its does give details on the speed tests..and yes ur correct these cars where a key element to the development of the Metroliner cars....awsome vid!!
@trinityct oh yeah most def..oh anytime..always glad to help out..if u want to know more i'll read my book or i can post a vid of the pages..i hope its not one i packed away..if it is packed away i can find it online and i'll let u know :-)
@trinityct It was a series of tests that lead up to the Metroliner programme in 1968. The test train eventually reached a top speed of 156mph. To hit 150 they had to modify the front end with a slight slope to reduce air resistance. The same slope was applied to the front of the Metroliner cars.
@sturmovikdragon Ooooo I'm putting that in the "show more" info tab!!! I saw the speedometer, and it only got up to about 135-140 from what I saw! Thanks!! :D
So why am I constantly late to work if they can go this fast?

Was this SEPTA or NJT?
TrainSounds 5 months ago
@TrainSounds Neither. This trainset was owned by Pennsy before SEPTA or NJT were formed.
trinityct 5 months ago
@TrainSounds They would've been SEPTA but they used these cars for crash tests 90s.

I'm still scratching my head over this one. I don't think these things barely get above 60 today. To think of them doing Acela speed, just wow!
murjax 9 months ago
@murjax Yeah, my jaw dropped the first time is saw this!
trinityct 9 months ago
These are same cars that SEPTA now currently use, but will retire the Silverliner II with Silverliner V cars in the coming year.
FrankG5874 9 months ago
@FrankG5874 I'm not sure whether or not these are the Silverliner 2 cars or the Silverliner 1 cars. Maybe both.
trinityct 9 months ago
@trinityct They are II's and the last 4 built.
