  • matts my favorite drummer i cant wait for the concept album from periphery to see what he'l do

  • wtf how does this guy not have toms?

  • @jeramiekoval doesnt need em

  • Someone get rid of that singer PLEASE.

  • @COLUMBINE1818 im glad no one in the band will actually listen to you

  • @iloveskateboarding45 I'm glad they put out an instrumental album, so I can enjoy their music the way it's meant to be heard.

  • saw him live! what an experience ;)

  • Running for cardio? Nah, I'll just try to play Matt's parts. I'd probably get a better workout anyway.

  • This band would be 100X better if it was instrumental

  • I love it when a band improvises during a live performance and doesn't try to play a song exactly like it is on the album. What do you think I paid to see you for when I could've stayed home and threw the CD in my CD player?

  • @SirAlaska

    AMEN

  • Think Matt's be using the same cymbals for his stack??

  • thats what I call a sick drummer!

  • as much as i could never do any of this, his style is just so random

  • I don't understand why people are giving Spencer a hard time. I am listening to this through headphones and he sounds great tonally. I am thinking people are thrown off by the live mix, or they just have a personal vendetta against him being in this band. So far on every video I have watched there has been a stab at him. I personally think he is amazing. I mean, @4:26 holy CRAP. Sounding like that live?!

Oh, Matt is a beast too by the way.

  • @gaigewilderdrums the music just sounds better without vocals....

  • @schwermetal To you, the music sounds better without vocals. I wouldn't mind having instrumental versions of these tracks, but I love how the vocals accent the song sections.

  • @gaigewilderdrums There is an instrumental version of the album out by the way, in case you DO want instrumental tracks.

  • @LunarLionheart I LOVE YOU.

  • @gaigewilderdrums I LOVE YOU TOO. Best budz 4 lyf k? Haha, enjoy the album!

  • @gaigewilderdrums He sounds pretty good in this video, but I've seen one or two other live videos where he sounded terrible. I agree though that people are two hard on him, he is a good singer.

  • @gaigewilderdrums i agree people shouldnt be so hard on him. hes a great vocalist. but live he is pretty out of tune on some parts.. that part at 4:26 was extremely forced because hes trying to sing too high, and that little thing he added on was a little too much. i love spencer but in the live setting he just has problems hitting the higher notes, and he ends up a little under pitch.

  • @gaigewilderdrums What I noticed is live he is amazing, the recorded album vocals sound like shit.

  • @goodnamepending I suppose that's an opinion. I actually all around love his vocals.

  • @gaigewilderdrums It's cause he's not hitting the right notes. But this is an old video, and Spencer's vocals have gotten significantly better, or so I've heard.

  • @GhazelMusic Listen to some of their recent gigs, my god is Spencer good now. He wasn't the best before and I think he understood and has since improved immensely. Does some songs almost better than the record now :)

  • OOOOOOH SPENCER WHY

  • Damn ya'll are hating on stage presence too hard. There's a difference between Linkin Park level music and Periphery level music, namely that Periphery has technical ass music. Maybe they ought to be moving around a bit more and stuff, but they are attempting to bring technical ass music to life in front of what is presumably a very hardcore fan base. It's like when people complain about stage presence when Meshuggah is playing Bleed. I'm like, "Um...THEY'RE PLAYING FUCKING BLEED, OKAY?!" Damn.

  • why do these guys always play like they're stuck in a can of sardines? seriously. the stages they play are big enough, and they're a BIG band (physically and metaphorically speaking). anyhow, matt's a beast. and i agree with the top comment, both hellpern and orbinator are awesome players with just different styles and feels on the kit. periphery is just TOTLA MAD! :))

  • @whuppak They changed a lot since then, when I saw them at Sonisphere this year they had great stage presence, got very involved, and Spencer definitely has improved vocally :P

  • What the fuck is he doing haha

  • he just goes fucking nuts. what a great band to actually deal with this fucking insane drumming xDhahahahahah

  • And the winner of the most awkward stage presence goes to...PERIPHERY!

  • dear goodness fill @2:40 is wicked!

  • Sotelo sucks live......

  • hey halpern, lovin the periphery shorts

  • Matt is an improv god!

  • dont thrash for this comment but i just cannot get into this style of drumming - though i agree hes good, its just not for me

  • one of the sickest drummers i've ever seen live, he destroyed that damn floor tom. haha.

  • matt makes me look mentally challenged when i play drums with 4 toms 2 snares 1 piccolo tom 3 crashes 1 ride 2 chinas 2 splashes and a set of roto toms and he can do like 100 times more stuff then me with like not even half that stuff

  • is stacked cymbles just 2 crashes put together upsidedown? cos it sounds better than his china

  • @raymonddrummer92 usually it's a crash mounted upside down inside a china

  • WE NEED MORE MATT HALPERN!! Maybe Icarus Lives or some other song?? please???? :P

  • Please, no more vocal....

  • @Bary73 no more vocal !! please !

  • @Bary73 He did get better toward the end.

  • i want his stacked cymbals, but i dont wanna steal his signature sound. they would be cool to use as an accent on my fills though!

  • what's the song in the intro part, before Light begins? sounds fuckin groovy!

  • pinche banda fea...

  • Reppin his own bands shorts like a fucking boss.

  • Is there any similar channels like sick drummer but for like Guitar? or maybe even Bass?

  • @evan258 I can advise you EMGpickupsTV on youtube, this is were I discovered Tosin Abasi, now they also make videos with bands playing but there are some awesome guitar ones. There is also FPEtv but its less good IMO.

  • @KadajMetal

Thanks man I will look into it!

  • Hate to beat it to death. But he's no Travis Orbin. I think Periphery could do better.... Not to say he's a bad drummer

  • @TheNoteGhost lmfao if u think travis orbin is better than matt you really shouldnt be stating opinions to any one you just sound delusional

  • @binty47 You're kidding right? Travis Orbins drumming is brilliant. Not to mention he's a right handed playing the taught himself to completely play open handed. I don't see how that could possibly be delusional. Orbin in my opinion has way more taste and solid written grooves then this guy...

  • @TheNoteGhost all that is , is muscle memory and practice . and second orbin is a robot , matt actually feels the music

  • @binty47 Yeah no big deal. Just defying muscle memory and years of hard work and hours of practice a day... I've had crappy drummers call me a robot too. Just because you have good technique and know how to do things without straining your muscles and body doesn't mean you're not feeling the music. That's the way I see at least. Orbin has amazing control at very fast tempo's. If you think that's just a little bit of practice you are the one who is delusional sir.

  • @TheNoteGhost The two of you are having a ridiculous argument. Travis and Matt may have played in the same band but they do not play alike! Both are immensely talented drummers with their own take on the music. Travis has insane technical ability and unique ideas. Matt is vary loose and plays with a great sense of groove. Travis tends to stick to the chart and Matt is very improvisational. You choose which you prefer but they are both amazing and neither is better than the other.

  • @bolognamof Couldn't have said it better myself.

  • @bolognamof What's the same band you speak of?

  • @bolognamof Finally someone who actually understands the difference between these two drummers!

  • @bolognamof fast and easy. Travis sucks :p

  • @METALERO31192 you couldn't be any more wrong.

  • @bolognamof True fucking dat!

  • @TheNoteGhost yeah, what he said. do some research, ya silly goose

  • Meinl all the way, such a shredder, epic talent

  • i wanna find out what cymbals are in his stack. sounds good

  • Seems like the man just wants to show all he's got. Don't think it fits the song. No place for ego if you're in the band

  • @TheChocoEye When you've got to compete with 3 sick guitarists, he needs to show all he's got

  • @TheChocoEye although i agree you need to stfu....this band WANTS that sick sound.....they are influenced by djent music, and djent DEMANDS virtuosic rhythmic capabilities!

  • @TheChocoEye I disagree. Plus, this is a concert, so he's just improvising a lot and having fun. I doubt that it's his ego.

  • I really have to piss but I need to watch this first!

  • God Spencer sounds like shit.

  • Joaquin.

    Get that fucking sound right!

  • ...I play with shoes but I have some old light airy track shoes because they protects my feet and at still light enough that they don't hamper my ability to hit the pedal. I havn't read enough to know for sure but if you are a drummer(which is what I don't know about) then you would know that pedals are like shoes you have to find one you like. It's all a matter of personal preference.

  • @ChronoGXray, if I may, I see your point in that it seems slightly counter intuitive to play with shoes. However, I ask you this, would you want to slam your foot down on a rigid piece of metal almost a thousand time in a short amount of time with no buffer? I should think not. Unless, as previously stated, you like to feel the metal...

  • @sticksofury989 If I may, I am a drummer as well and I play barefoot because I feel like a have more control and grip with my feet when I play without shoes or socks or whatever. It is definitely personal preference on the way people drum. I haven't gotten bruises or blisters from it b/c my feet are constantly connected to the pedal itself. :) Happy drumming and... METAL!

  • Also you can hear peripherys complete album and like Travis Orbin these guys dont repeat their fills versus other drummers whos kit are big and repeat the fills over and over again!

  • complete kudos on his kit.

  • is this his whole kit??

  • @Spencer: 1:01-1:03 = story of my life.

  • I think he's one of the best metal drummer ever

  • "The only man who can break 3 cymbals with one swing of the stick!" Come on, we don't want him to break most of his cymbals!

  • What's the deal with his stacked cymbal? the china ride thingy. Can some one tell me what it is and how it all works and such?

  • @metaldudebuff92 It's called a 'stack cymbal' and it consists of a china with a crash turned upside down on top of it. It's used mostly for the short/sharp sound. I use mine as an accent cymbal mostly, but it can be used as he does in this video to ride on if you choose.

  • why do the vocals get so much crap? I dont get it. To me they are great!

  • @gacktxrawr That's all that matters

  • @gacktxrawr Its just difference of opinion really. I followed bulb before the band got together on his soundclick page because I loved his new instrumental style, and then I loved his instrumental work with animals as leaders and such, and now that the fans who have followed him for so long see him periphery, they usually prefer instrumental work there as well. I don't mind the vocalists screams or anything, but sometimes he, in my opinion, he sounds whiny. Everybody sees it different though.

  • this right here... shows that you do not need 2 snares, 3 bass drums, 7 toms, 5 chinas, 8 crashes, 3 stacks, 4 hihats, and 12 splashes to have amazing sonding drums. he has 1 snare, 1 floor tom, 1 bass drums, 1 ride, 1 crash, 1 pair of hihats, 1 china and 1 pair of stacked cymbals. and sounds amazing. inspiration.

  • @baronofhell08 - AMEN TO THAT!

  • @baronofhell08 well said...

  • @baronofhell08 he must have to carry his own drums or something

  • @baronofhell08 Making fun of Mike Portnoy much? ha ha ha :-)

  • @baronofhell08 I have to at least have two toms. but that's it :-D

  • @baronofhell08 and this isn't even the most basic setup he has played live with.

  • @baronofhell08 Well if your matt you don't....but GK prob does =P lol

  • @Drumdude1235 lulz, true say :P

  • @baronofhell08 You also forgot the main reason why people THINK they need a big drum kit... he has NATURAL TALENT...

  • @baronofhell08 It's true that you can have limited drums and have them sound great, but you can also have triple the amount and have better. If less is more then imagine how much more more is more is ;)

  • @baronofhell08 I get it, you hate Portnoy.

  • @baronofhell08 Amen!

  • @baronofhell08 and still he plays extremely good \m/

  • @baronofhell08 No, but you do need a bunch of different things if you want to create different sounds. It's all in how you want to play. He can't play a Rush song, Dream Theater song, Between the Buried and Me song, or anything else because he only has 1 tom. So how your kit is set up depends on how you want to play.

  • @KIPPEStheDRUMMER still doable

  • im very excited to see what matt is going to do in the next couple years with periphery... and even to say without them hes going to be a very successful drummer, there's so much potential its not even funny ... lol but yea hes a god

  • awesome musician! but i agree to GoldenXen i dont like the vox either.....

  • " Peripheryyyy...LOVE that shit! "

  • band without the vocal its better.

  • @GoldenXen I think some songs are good with the vocals while others just don't mesh well. But they will get it right on the next album I'm sure. Too much talent not to.

  • the staked cymbals what serie an zises are they

  • I love spencers message to the sound guy :P

  • Comment removed

  • @SuperNicaraguan

I'm not a fan of anyone who posts comments like this on youtube.

  • @sumstufflol look at this tough guy

  • @SuperNicaraguan

Not trying to be "tough". You're just stupid.

  • Comment removed

  • @SuperNicaraguan No its not, clearly he does just fine without a rack tom

  • Comment removed

  • @SuperNicaraguan He's fucking better than you will ever be

  • @SuperNicaraguan he plays what hes comfortable with and plus he pulls it off better then most drummer i know trust me hes perfect with what he has and playing so he shouldn't be judged on hes prefrence plus hes a beast of a drummer if you could play that (i'm not saying i could) people would consider you comment more

  • @darkmatter8 what did he say? just curious

  • @SuperNicaraguan No it isn't now shut the fuck up

  • hes crazy, his sense of groove is unhuman

  • seems like a very physically demanding way to play. id get tired after like a few minutes of even trying to play like that

  • hahaha 3:21 little looky loo from matt. haha

  • the vocalists singing voice always sound kinda weak live :/

  • singer is rubbish, replace please, tha

  • @vargaa86 He has got FAR better recently

  • @vargaa86 the human abstract?

  • he's constantly jamming, amazing

  • Holy crap! Spencer actually hit that note at 4:27. He played around with it a lot, but he got all the way up there.

  • @doublebass08 who is spencer ?

  • @4stringbloodyfingers The vocalist guy.

  • Lol is he playing bare foot? xD

  • I wonder if they ever thought "Matt!!! Just play something simple!"? lol. Hopefully they never will.

  • A mid-range voice doesn't fit in this kind of music.. I think Chris was a really good singer but his voice did not match the guitars and the rest of the band . Thats why i think Spencer has done the vocals better than the former singers.

  • I'd like the drummers that say "the more drums the merrier" tell that to Matt.

  • @d3tach3d hell yeah man. Love those guys too. Like these guys a little more but Animals as Leaders is my numero uno

  • omg yeah we all get it. yes Spencer has a whiny voice, but you have to admit his range is impressive. and im talking about singing only

  • @TheCompulsionToKill you want to hear range...listen to opeth ;P

  • this is sick as hell!

  • best modern metal drummer ? yes!

  • dude he even has Periphery shorts! thats awesome...

  • anyone tell me whats going on with that upside cymbal malarky? I'm up for doing it for that sound but can't tell whats going on there. ?

  • @stixflix06 I have mine setup like that but not with THAT big of cymbals... it just makes a quick splash sound and doesnt resonate.

  • @aaron2414 What is it tho? is it an upside down 16" crash on a 20" crash or..? i can't figure out whats goin on lol

  • @stixflix06 oh yea man, you got me LOL!!!! I have a 10 inch crash with an 8 flipped over on top of it... his look huge

  • @aaron2414 ah yeah its cool i just went on the meinl website on his page. upside down 16" crash on a 20" china or something like that.

  • @stixflix06 16" Mb10 Crash upside on top of an 18" Byzance Brilliant china...Quite a large stack lol

  • i think i account for half of the views on this

  • "With one swing of the stick"

So yeah... 1:55, I guess thats true then? :O

  • contolled chaos

  • I can't find the "one".

  • @Pablotheawesomeguy Aaron Spears reference? :P

  • @TheBigAP13 No I just am not sure where the downbeat is in all this sweet madness.

  • does anyone know what his stack is?

  • @domdamanisdaman Go find it on the meinl website. All I know is that they don't actually sell it as one thing.

  • i haved never ear them live and the only thing that suck is the voice

  • @DARKSINS696 I personally am no fan of Spencer's vocal style either, but to say that he sucks is ridiculous.. Please have some respect for these guys; they have spent years to get where they are now, musically.

  • @DARKSINS696 Fortunately Spencer has improved a lot

  • barefoot drummers FTW!

  • @facedspaced - I have NEVER understood why some folks would wear shoes when playing drums (save MAYBE socks). You don't wear gauntlets or any of that mess on your hands (unless you want to use DRUMMING GLOVES), so just what the heck are they doing?

  • @ChronoGXay but most ppl dont walk around barefoot also. Most ppl do have thier hands exposed though. you cant compare hands to feet in an arguement like that. i do prefer to play barefoot, and thats only becuz i like the cold metal on my feet, but playing with shoes doesnt hinder my playing at all. on ther other hand, if i wer to wear gloves while playing guitar, that WOULD hinder my playing. and id never use drumming gloves, i like the blisters and calluses i get from the sticks.

  • @4stringFanatico - I get not wanting to walk around barefoot. It may not have seemed this way, but I was not criticizing you personally. (But I can argue with it, and well.) It's probably that people have so often worn shoes while playing that it just seems normal, whereas being barefoot or wearing gloves... not so much. Personally, I *also* prefer playing barefoot, and would ultimately like to be using direct drive pedals; I like the idea of immediate response, just like get with my drumsticks.

  • @facedspaced hes wearing socks :P

  • Crap drumming...

  • @cyphersX76 yeah pretty much, my 5 year old unborn son could do this in his sleep.

  • @OnHopeAlone 5 year old unborn son, lol

also, does anyone know who that other guitarist is? The sweater at 1:26 I don't think I've ever seen him before. A fill in?

  • @LostCallProductions Huh? That's the bass player, bro.

  • @MikePostDrums well this is awkward.

    lol, I had no idea.
