The diesels make good engines for pulling and hauling heavy gear in a 4x4 application. The combustion engine is great for high rpm and works best for 4x4 mudding trucks.

Off-roading is all about TRACTION! You don't need to approach that fast but you need a higher lift, bigger tires, center diff locks, rear and front diff lock, and some serious low range transmission. A 150 hp engine is more than enough but what matters is the low end TORQUE, Diesel are still the best off-road engines. Prepare better next time.

@daftaddiction Had one...sold it. They all come with their own oil-drip pans for the floor when you park up. Seriously! They lose so much oil! They also eat driveshafts! 6.0Ltr Petrol trucks that are fun to own until you realise that you can't park in city carparks, you drive from one fuel station to another (hopping) and people loath what you drive! :o)

You can buy them for a mere £15,000 in the UK now. Nobody wants them! I've downsized to a 3.2L MPV now. Ho hum.
