Finally able to read what is written on the yellow sign at the beginning of this video. I've seen it before on newsreels but it went by too fast to read.
Just a reminder of how much we owe to the Spitfire & Hurricane Pilots, groundcrew, plotters..in fact everyone involved in the Battle of Britain. We came so close. Even more amazing to realise this is what it must have looked like at Duxford in 1940.

lol i keep hearing that armerica saved britain give me one good fact on how they helped us because they didnt during the blitz no they only helped at the end we sent more soldiers than armericans more armoured vehicles we wer more of a threat to germany than armerica
I hate governments.I saw 80 P-51s in Kissimee,Fla. but they were not allowed to fly in vast formation like in this video. When Bf 109 Black 6 crashed, the British government grounded it for good. They didn't ground the Blue Angels and they have had numerous mishaps. These planes belong in the sky and the governments need to support these planes or stay out of the way. It's not their lives being risked or their money keeping them flying...back off!
Over time the romance and nostalgia clouds reality. My Dad was a fighter pilot stationed at Biggen Hill and he lost a lot of friends, usually by a firey death over the channel. There is no question that the 'few' were a brave bunch of lads and our country owes them more that can be given. It is great that there are dedicated enthusiasts (on both sides) that restores these historical aircraft to bring to future generations.
God what a beautiful sound, and a great video!!! The roar of Spits flying by is a unique sound that just sends chills down my spine, wish I was there!!!
I live in the wrong country. That has to be the best Airsow anywhere! We have some warbirds in the US,but I never see them put through their paces like this. That scramble was just great and the flyby of all those planes in formation must sound great in person! My reguards to Black 6. It sucks when governments stick ther noses where they shouln't.If they can't cash in on it,no one is allowed to have any fun.Put the damn plane back to flying status! Keep them flying forever!
Glad you like Black 6, I helped restore it - first time round! After the crash it was rebuilt to fly again but was deemed 'too valuable' even for a test flight to be allowed.
@HerrFredrik The best airshow I've ever been to had a Mustang, a Spitfire, an Australian Boomerang, a Bf109 and a Zero flying in a historically inaccurate formation. It was awesome to see such a diverse range of aircraft in the sky at the same time.
If they're going to dress up like they did in the 1940's they should put more of an effort in with the squadran scramble. Next time they should construct a page of dialogue like in the movie when the head honco says "Don't just bloody stand there, get one up!" etc. etc.
Duxford is amazing place for aviation history. I saw so many planes there that i always dreamed of seeing in real life.
Also in Cambridge at "The Eagle" (i think it's called that), you can see where the old WW2 pilots burnt their names on the roof of the pub with lighters during the war.
Shame RIAT is on the same weekend as this! Organisers really need to think about what dates they choose to have these shows on :( would of loved to have done them both but I am at RIAT all week :)
Classic, what most can only dream of, flying a spitfire, I reccomend reading First Light by Geoff Wellum, a pilot with 92 squadron his memoirs of life in ww2
im using my grandons account, he wanted to show me this to see what it was like, it was not exactly like this, alot louder i would say. We had to scramble to the spitfires as fast as we could because of the HE-111's flying overhead. We lost one of our wingmen to a Me109.
But seeing this video now, it makes me want to cry.
I just got back from Duxford. Wow, was I impressed. Followed up with trip to Cabinet War Room in London. Terrific video. Mine pales that was going to upload. I felt like 1940 when I was there, but even more with yours. Thanks.

That 10-ship flyby at 1:30 is just awesome. To have the entire sky filled with hundreds of these planes must have been completely awe-inspiring.

Airshows where you find just "allied" aircraft are very boring.... :-( .... my opinion.
HerrFredrik 2 years ago
A Ju-52, a Me-108, a Spanish built Me-109 and a Bücker Jungmann were also taking part in the show, even though they are not on this flick. ;-)

the bit at the beginning shows well how they had to use each minute before a scramble as if it where their last on the ground, and for some it was :S
And the sound of that many spits flying overhead is the best sound ever XD
