  • Id love to know how many times the pen bounced off Benedict's head until they got that shot lol

  • I agree. How many eyes were lost in the making of this scene? haha. I can just imagine Martin throwing the pen in the wrong direction 10 times and each time, "oh christ..." and having to do it over again. By the end they probably hated that pen. They're great =)

  • Did anyone else notice that John threw him a Sharpie marker?? I just realised that... (while re-watching the episode for the 13th time)

  • That Pen Is So Badass- Mr Freeman You Utter Legend x

  • I'm sorry, but I find this utterly unremarkable. Many's the time I've caught something using only my peripheral vision as a guide. It was a neat little character detail for the show, but when you slow it down and draw all this attention to it, you make it epic overkill.

  • How is that extra chromosome working out for ya?

  • sorry this has nothing to do with sherlock but.....I THINK MCR ARE FANTASTIC

  • Cool ^.^

  • I am sorry but I think that you are an idiot. I noticed it the first time I watch the show. And yeah it is a cool toss but why waste the time to show it like a magic trick. Your slow and no people the mirror was on the mantel. Sherlock was sitting so he really can't see, and as you see John is leaning down he can't see that mirror what a stupid video. Do the world a favor and stop inflicting you opinions to the world.

  • The needed only one scene for this because it acted ad the first time.

  • they have a mirror infront of them, that's how they can see each other!!!

  • i do it all the time, not so cool if you ask me !

  • Weren't they both looking in the mirror hanging on the wall infront of them?

  • @ItsKatFace The mirror is above the mantle which means Sherlock/Ben most likely couldn't see in it from a seated position.

  • I do that all the time wtf, but it was entertaining

  • AMAZING! Although I'm pretty sure they were both looking into the mirror, and that's how they were able to see it. Epic pen toss though!

  • Just flagged this by accident. Sorry i actually thought it was brilliant...

  • I am wondering how many idiots watch Sherlock! Well ofcourse the show has been designed perfectly, that's why it is so highly rated... you fool!

  • It is an 'epic catch' ( and toss) & he does it again with a pack of cigarettes in Series 2. Actually a rapid catch & toss back . The man seems to have it all.

  • You should go into teaching, you're very thorough when explaining things.

  • Ha, yeah that really is good coordination on the part of the actors. Personnally, I was laughing at this part of the episode because Sherlock asks for the pen, apparently an hour ago, and then never does anything with it. He just holds it.

I would've rolled my eyes at him and groaned. :)

  • @OnezumiDaisuke oh, that's frustrating :p

  • Ben use to captain his Rugby Team @ Harrows. I assume he is very well co-ordinated.

  • @sawp56 well, I suppose he'd have to be! :)

  • that is how you know you connect with someone. When throwing pens at each other is a mindless action. XD I love this!

  • there's a mirror...

  • is that all? i was looking at the pen thinking what is it? whats wrong with the dam pen?

  • It is very win x)

  • omg is this video for real?

  • OR someone is hiding behind benedict and throws a pen up so the pen that martin threw fell to the floor

  • @bamboozle199 nah, that ruins it ;p

  • I: look and look and that I saw the solution and thought: was this it? -___-

  • Sorry what? I was distracted by his face.

  • peripheral vision!... amazing!... although for a stage actor like Benedict you would expect his peripheral vision to be good... actors have to know where everyone is all the time... and if you focus your mind to thinking about what's going around you... Id love to see that scene while he walks around a table or something similar.

  • that's SICK. But really awesome at the same time!! ohhhh I love Sherlock ;P

  • Comment removed

  • hello there is a mirror bennedict is looking at!!!

  • @pottergek he's sitting too low to see the pen in the mirror. in the next scene you can't see his reflection in the mirror, and the camera is about level with Sherlock's head, so therefore, he can't see it. just saying...

  • I saw it, but I was directed here by the "awesome" page of TV Tropes.

  • Best pen toss ever!!!!! <3

  • The mirror theory is good but you try catching something by only looking in a mirror, it's bloody difficult that took some real skill

  • ha ha...they are like an old married couple

  • How is it cool

all sherlock did was look through the corners of his eye without looking

i know it makes no scence

  • That's so coooooooool

  • I will admit, I thought they were watching each other in the mirror. But I suppose the angle might be too awkward...

  • @rosedraquia it could be, but if you look closely to john's eyes...

i don't know, but i don't thinks that is. John is looking down and the mirror is higher so...

but it could be, the mirror is placed in a way that it is possible :P

  • Benedict & Martin are the perfect Sherlock & John ^^ you must adore them =)

  • I was expecting you to notice that they were using the mirror which is off screen to see the throw.

  • its no big deal at all it youst looks good on tv and i guess everybody noticed it on the first shot we were youst expecting something big..

  • Benedict looks at the pen in the corner of his eye... Although Iove him anybody can do that :/

  • I heard in an interview a magazine did with Benedict, that he did that first time. The camera was on but they all didn't know so they had to do it 3 or 4 times afterwards. They had then noticed they have 4 or 5 clips, clicking on the first one it showed this scene. Go'orn Benny, getting that first time!

  • Note how the angle of Martin's head changes just slightly prior to the toss, and how Benedict's eyes focus briefly before the toss. They're both looking at a spot directly in front of Benedict. Implying a mirror, allowing them both to see each other and complete the toss without implying that to the camera.

  • that is amazing!!

  • It is very easy this one. If you thik of how they did Gandalf and Frodo in the Lord of the Rings to get the hight difference right....well this is the same. Sherlock is right by the camera. (Foreground) John. is further away. (Background).....right. So there is another person crouched down by Sherlock's left side. He catches pen....Then puts it into sherlocks hand! THE One acutally by the camera! Put in slow motion and you will see the light is different on the other hand to Sherlock's hand.

  • By the way, usually when you throw something like a pen or a pencil, it rotates when it's in the air. This one does not. ._. Martin's freakin' pen-throwing powers!

  • @moony006 Could have tossed him a Sonic Screwdriver on accident. Should be heavy enough to not rotate too much through that toss.

  • I had the Epic Geordi Maneuver music in my head while watching this.

  • What's all this fuss about really. It's not that impressive, just a cool scene...

  • There was a mirror on the wall in front of Martin; That might have helped a little. (Though from our viewpoint, it was too high to be of any help to Benedict).

  • Probably had a mirror in front of them, to be fair.

  • I saw it first time watching it, on TV :3

  • I noticed that also when I was watching it. I had to replay it several times, assuming that I'd missed something. It must just have been a great toss. They wouldn't care to use cgi to perfect a pen toss; it's just not that important.

  • weren't they looking at the mirror?

  • Comment removed

  • they must have just done that take so many times they knew where the pen was going...

  • The mirror seems to be a little above. I'm not sure if they can use it to throw the pen....

On second thought I'm gonna get my bro and the mirror and try this. lol

  • ummm..... k. We get it. No need to explain. I do like watching it though. Kinda sexy in slow motion. shrug

  • CGI?? No shit sherlock

  • I was so sure you were going to say something about the pen being some kind of penis imagery. Just goes to show where these two send my mind.

  • This is stupid. I saw it the first time 'round.

  • How did you not notice that? that's the entire shot. I thought you were going to point out that they were using the mirror to look at each other which would have been smarter, but really, it isn't all that extraordinary.

  • It took you four attempts to notice that? Um were you looking at the rest of the time?

  • @BaileysMariner duh, Benedict's gorgeous face.

  • @BaileysMariner at benedict cumberbatch, obviously

  • it was done with computer effects Capatterson... dumb dumb

  • Mirror dumb dumb

  • Obviously, they are Jedi knights that are MIND-BONDED.

    Or something.

    :O

  • Oh, that was so obviously! I tought you found something REALLY interesting :(

  • You really didn't have to explain it so much, you could have just shown the clip...

  • There is a mirror that both of them are facing, and while the angle is wrong for them to see each other, perhaps the movement of the throw was seen in the mirror, or if you are hell-bent against that theory (which was used in the novels and short stories), Sherlock would have easily noticed the movement and John was a military man so he more than likely had fantastic reflexes, making a simple toss in the opposite direction very easy.

Either way, extremely badass movement for both of the actors

  • what about the mirror ?:D

  • @thomfuck the mirror is to high up 4 ben 2 b anle 2 c martain.

martain could c ben but ben wouldnt have seen anythin in the mirror but the roof of the room. i no this coz of the angles and a little physics

  • I forgot about this. The first time I was like 'Woah, further proof that these two are seriously cool'.

I love their little moments of pally-ness. The second series is shaping up to be seriously bromantic, I'm glad as Sherlock seems more accepting of his and John's friendship (although one of the trailers looks like its taking a couple of steps backwards) :(

  • @AudeBryant - I agree, sort of. I want more bromance in BBC's Sherlock because I don't feel like we're getting enough in comparison to the Guy Richie version. I just want more bromance, John deserves it at least.

  • @TwilightMao He sure does, bless him.

  • god wouldnt it be horrible if after a milion pen tosses they get it right but forget their lines XD

  • Oh Benedict, I hope you didn't suffer any pen related injuries :(

  • I think it was on a position too high fot them to use..you can see that Martin can only see his face on it.

  • Comment removed

  • Maybe they used mirrors in front of them? Not meaning that this is any less extraordinary though...

  • My mum looked it up and it only took one take. They couldn't believe it, but they were excited!

  • Speaking as someone currently at drama school I feel I should point out that while it is entirely possible that the side of Ben's face we don't see in this shot is covered in plasters and pen marks, if they've had movement training things like that pen toss would be second nature.

  • @IceMetalPunk Yes!! I love that video

  • I did notice it the first time around, and thought "Damn, that's badass".

  • there was a mirror, but I'm sure they did not get that on the first try. Lol

  • @Gabriellaella23 Yeah, stuff like this usually takes a hilarious number of takes. If you've seen Scott Pilgrim's or Spaced Series 2's outtakes you'll know what I mean :P

  • Did you notice they both might have been looking in the mirror? :D

  • :) magnifico!!!

  • Apparently it only took one take.

  • I paused after the third time watching it and gaped at the screen.

  • Lol I think I noticed it the first time, but I don't think I appreciated it quite as much at the time.

  • Or they could just be using the mirror above the fireplace which they both appear to be looking at...

  • Look at the position Sherlock is in. It would easily allow for the left hand to belong to someone else not in the frame. If you notice Watson has a brief look to the left as if he's made eye contact with someone sitting there just before he throws it.

  • thought the same thing!

  • They probably used the mirror that in front of them to gage where to throw.

  • 1:10

"Lets see if you can catch it the first time."

...I see what you did there..

  • o.O I KNEW I WASN'T ALONE

  • Probably not a lot because Benedict is brilliant and so is Martin

  • I did notice it the first time I watched it btw....

  • I heard an interview where they said they actually got it on the FIRST take but, the director wanted something else added or maybe there was a noise or something, but for some reason they made them do it again and then it took like 2-3 more times.....that is still amazing though.

  • I'm so proud, I saw it on my first look. That's only because I spend most of my Sherlock-watching time staring intently at Benedict's neck and hands. He's fucking amazing.

  • I caught it the literally at the VERY end... glad I did though :D

  • omo .. i noticed the 4th time i watched the episode .. it's fantastic

  • I noticed the second time I watched that episode. Good catch. :)

  • I think Martin used the mirror, and Benedict used his peripheral vision. It's still friggin epic that it was done so perfectly, a lot of people didn't even notice it (me included, I noticed Sherlock but missed John)

  • wow cool

  • There was a mirror opposite... might have something to do with it.

  • I've watched this chapter like... 8 times and I never noticed that :l

    Awesome :P

  • that is in fact an epic pen catch...... i caught iut 1st time around.. yay me lol

  • At the end of the scene you van see there's a mirror on the wall, perhaps they were looking at eachother in the mirror while tossing the pen.. Otherwise, yeah that must have cost a lot of takes to shoot :)

  • How many pens in the eye did that scene result in? XD lol.

  • How many takes did that go through? At least the camera isn't moving, though. So the crew didn't have to worry about tech stuff.

  • I did see It the first time I've watched that episode...

  • Duuuuuude that's so epic!!

  • benedict said in one interview that it was actually one take, and that it was just a really lucky shot. not sure where that article is now, but it really is pretty impressive.

  • Benedict and Martin are just so extraordinary...

  • and the point to this was....??

  • Comment removed

  • bloody hell.....

  • AAAHHH THE EPICNESS!!!

  • There's a whole video about this ?

  • they both played rugby

  • there is a mirror .. infront of Sherlock! see the scene after! and John was looking at it when h threw it!!

  • ahhaha it's epic!! But i did notice it the first time I watched the series ;D

  • Both use their left hands in the trick. Only Martin's a lefty, making the catch just a teensy bit harder for Benedict.

  • Comment removed

  • Apparently it took quite a few times to get it right.

  • this is epic! what a detail, i love it!!!!

  • According to the interview I read, they only managed to do it the first time - one of the directors didn't care for the take (something at the end) so they tried to do it again, but never managed it successfully, so they did that really sudden jump cut instead. Either way, it's awesome as all hell.

  • That is so cool!

  • 1 word... mirror

  • 3 takes. Managed that 1st time, but camera didn't catch it. Failed the second one.

  • Yeah, that was nice catch, I noticed it right a way when I looked it and I couldn't believe, it was so wow. And I really wonder how many takes it took before they really could do it :)

  • Nice catch, both for you and for Ben. I had noticed that Benedict didn't look at Martin while catching the pen, but I didn't realize Martin hadn't been looking at Benedict.

    :D

That just makes it a lot more awesome.

    :D

  • Thank you for pointing that out, I'd completely missed it. Didn't even think about it. But love it.

  • In slow mo... it was just pure awesome.

  • That's some mad ninja skills right there XD

  • When the show was first broadcast, I was sat watching it with my family and I saw this and jumped up shouting; "DID YOU SEE THAT OMG DID YOU SEE THAT?".

I got told off, because non of them saw and thought I was taking the piss :(

  • lol. they probably did it so many times that they could do it in their sleep.

  • I wonder how many time Martin Hit him in the face with that pen.

  • Benedict said in an interview that they did it in the first scene, but the camera didn't catch it properly, and it took a few scenes to get it again.

  • Probably a little trick bbc did with string or something !

  • @Karkkirae the mirror (if you mean the one above the fireplace) would be too high for Sherlock's eye line, but it isn't impossible they placed a second mirror on that wall then removed it so it was easier.

A mirror does make the whole scene more likely, I highly doubt they did 50 takes of one scene before getting annoyed and making it easier.

  • I think I read somewhere that it took them only one take to succeed O__o

  • @octopus170 I think they managed to do it first time, but the camera didn't get it and they Benedict couldn't catch it for ages after that.

  • Comment removed

  • I don't think 2:42 minutes was really necessary to explain something so simple. Kept waiting for something epic to happen, but you just stated something pretty obvious.

  • Well, there's a mirror in front of them. Exactly in the place they're looking at.

  • I don't understand what's so awesome about this... I noticed it the first time watching the show and thought it was cool but then again everything they do on that show is cool... and no I still don't get it....

  • OH this is AWESOME. .....and I should sleep once in a while instead of youtubing Sherlock vids....

  • YOU MORON !!!!!

Its visible in the freaking first scene that they aren't looking at each other !

  • @gautamgotigotwa Some of us are just a bit slower then you, oh wise-and-observant one! It took me until they said to realize Martin hadn't looked.

  • @AelTheRomulan you an American?

  • @gautamgotigotwa I follow BBC shows and my friends admire my accent. What do you think?

  • @AelTheRomulan Ajmerican Spy trying to take over the British army.

  • WOW. Just, wow. Now I understand why Mark and Steven put them together. Great chemistry...

  • THEY HAVEN'T GOT THE OUTTAKES JAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

  • I noticed that when i watched it the first time....

  • I think that's a great bit of comedy. John knows Sherlock is so good that even if he looks totally concentrated on one thing he is still master of his surroundings. lol!

  • I couldn't catch it if someone was two inches away and i was looking at it. Sigh
