As much fun as it is to watch two people on the internet argue.... your both partially right. It's very possible to lock the front brakes and spin the rear tires, as the rear brakes only do about 30% of the stopping. So, even without a line lock, the tires spin with enough torque. But a line lock makes it much easier, and it puts much less strain on your rear brakes.
I'm not about to argue with someone, but try google if your truly curious. Google "How to do a burnout in a manual transmission", then google "line locks" I would post links, but youtube doesn't appreciate links very much.
