I was amazed in due time Fisher's turned to young musicians with the words. It has told: " I do not put a problem to learn you to play the piano . I have conceived something other: to withdraw you from a piano and to lead to itself! ". Here the attitude to music of the great teacher and the musician.
This is absolutely beautiful playing! Thanks for posting it. I agree with you, Beckmesser, that pianists nowadays lack depth. They are mostly concerned with speed, and even in the slow pieces they still often miss the mark completely.
For example, listen to Walden Hughes play this prelude and fugue on YouTube. I don't think I've ever heard this prelude and fugue bludgeoned like Dr. Hughes does. His performance of the fugue has to be the most ridiculously unmusical playing on YouTube.
Fischer conducted too... Sadly we are only left with only a fraction of what he did. I think he's become my favorite Bach pianist. Good thing i'm not a music major :)
Le prélude est splendide!

simply divine. gould's take on this piece used to be my favourite, but fischer's playing in the fugue is indeed a work of art in its own right

Reminds me of the BWV 659, the "Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland" and the BWV 639, the "Ich ruf' zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ".
Your description fits well with most pianists today who cannot play slow pieces with depth.
