I love this movie. I grew up watching it on VHS when I was about 6 or 7 years old. I'm 20 years old now and watching it again is so Nostalgic. It's so hard to watch it and seeing how either Milo or Otis is in any kind of danger you'd want to just run in there, save them and get them to a safe place. D: But it's a very enjoyable movie and shows how different life is outside of your own world.

@NymphadoraBeeWolf Well the reality of it is the allegations of animal cruelty towards the japanese makers never really got down to the truth of the matter because the people who were ment to be overseeing the wellbeing of the animals where not present when most of the scenes of the film were shot. It was my favorite film as a child but now as an adult I just looked at it a little differently. Cat in a box down a stream rapid isnt my entertainment. tainted the memories for me anyway.

I have to admit that the night time scene of Milo floating through the dark forest is quite scary for me. The animal cries in the distance and the eerie music add to the intensity of the scary scene. Then, there's the dramatic scene that followed it when Otis finds the empty box at the swamp. But, the saddest scene of all is later on in this film.

@THEemmalouise Ya I noticed the scene with the bear, when the bear first comes out it has teeth then the close up scenes it doesn't, maybe an old circus bear? People act like they threw animals together and just filmed the outcome. It wouldn't take 4 years to film that.

The water must not have been very deep and they probably had a bunch of people standing by to catch the cat if it DID start to float away. And I'm certain there was also alot of trick photography involved too. But I truthfully don't think the cat was in too much danger if any.
Though this movie had a controversy regarding the animal cruelty, how they shot the story and animals is really clever. I mean, if the producers likes animals so much I don't think they'd just shove 30 cats off a cliff and think nothing of it.

This is awful! That cat is horrified! And you know they didn't get that waterfall scene in one take. They could have easily lost a few cats before they were finally able to get a shot that worked. I seriously doubt they had crew members standing off camera waiting to jump into the rapids to save a cat. Face it, this movie is snuff. If you loved this movie as a kid (and I believe me I did) you should feel cheated and lied to.
they're not wild animals. the bear etc are hand-reared in captivity, and know not to hurt the cat and dog. the cat barely goes under the water when it goes down the waterfall, and it's blantantly not dead, because you can see it still moving when it gets to the bottom! the movie would be illegal to be released if any animal cruelty was involved.
I wonder what the fox will think when he returns to discover someone had eaten his muskrat lunch/dinner.

you have to be out of your mind if you think no abuse took place during the filming of this movie. a cat gets thrown off of a fucking cliff for christ's sake. it was filmed in japan, where animal rights laws are virtually nonexistent. at the end of the movie there's a disclaimer that states: "the animals used were filmed under strict supervision with the utmost care for their safety and well-being.” ...nothing is said about no animals being harmed, however.

There was investigation over it and no animal cruelty came up in the reports.

@THEemmalouise Ya I noticed the scene with the bear, when the bear first comes out it has teeth then the close up scenes it doesn't, maybe an old circus bear? People act like they threw animals together and just filmed the outcome. It wouldn't take 4 years to film that.

The water must not have been very deep and they probably had a bunch of people standing by to catch the cat if it DID start to float away. And I'm certain there was also alot of trick photography involved too. But I truthfully don't think the cat was in too much danger if any.

Though this movie had a controversy regarding the animal cruelty, how they shot the story and animals is really clever. I mean, if the producers likes animals so much I don't think they'd just shove 30 cats off a cliff and think nothing of it.

This is awful! That cat is horrified! And you know they didn't get that waterfall scene in one take. They could have easily lost a few cats before they were finally able to get a shot that worked. I seriously doubt they had crew members standing off camera waiting to jump into the rapids to save a cat. Face it, this movie is snuff. If you loved this movie as a kid (and I believe me I did) you should feel cheated and lied to.

he had an island full of animals naturally so invited a film crew. they spent four years capturing all the footage before editing it into a film.

they're not wild animals. the bear etc are hand-reared in captivity, and know not to hurt the cat and dog. the cat barely goes under the water when it goes down the waterfall, and it's blantantly not dead, because you can see it still moving when it gets to the bottom! the movie would be illegal to be released if any animal cruelty was involved.
