Did they perform Pasacaglia after this Double Concerto? I remember a Pasacaglia video I've seen was performed by them wearing the same clothes as they are in this one
@makuletboy Yeah well sometimes its an advantage to be Canadian :P i know some people who play in the vancouver symphony as well so theres a chance I'll get to meet him! mwahahahah
when I read comments like this I want to scream! How narrow minded can you get? Too fast? You try it and see what your interpretation is like. I'm sure Johannes would have loved it. Of course it's a masterpiece and musicians treat it like a living piece of music -- not like a statue in a museum! Get real.
@4ClarissaH - I don't know what you are talking about regarding statues. I am merely expressing MY opinion and we are entitled to each our own. It's nothing to do with narrow-mindedness at all, simply what "resonates" with the individual. If you have time to listen to Oistrakh/Rostropovich play Brahms you will hear the difference. Their performance has more nuance and musicality - the best I've known.
This IS VERY good, yes. Watching beautiful Julia makes it sound even better. ...BUT, without watching, the older Oistrakh/Rostripovich recording is more heavenly!!
wouldn't Daniel Muller-Schott be an equal match? his goffriller is quite expensive... he's just as talented and he has everything else you mentioned..
MY GOD! I absolutely love how the cellist takes over as the dominant sound at 1:41! Such a beautiful melody! In my opinion when the cellist gets to play that short solo part, it really shows that the cello has more potential than it normally doesn't get recognized for. I really would like to see the cello get to be more of the dominant sound rather than the violins. Violins sound too screechy and high for my general liking even though I myself am a violinist.....
Although Cellists do have a lot of works composed for them it is not at all as many as for the violin. The only instrument that has around the same number of pieces composed for it is the piano. And I have to agree, Dvoraks cello concert is awesome (but maybe not the greatest of all times..)
@redhotchiliangel Sir, I'm not a cellist, nor much of a pianist, but the Dvorak has been my number 1 these fifty years. Even Brahms was deeply impressed: "If I had thought such a concerto possible, I'd have written one myself". Says it all really.
@daniel3231995 Since when hasn't cellos been unrecognized for ? They have shown throughout history to be a spectacle of brilliance ever since the firsts of Bach's cello suites to the most contemporary shostakovich Cello Concertos. But not so much violas, one of the most underrated generalized string instruments. Violas are the icing on top of everything, but never the finishing touch where they shine as a leading voice to most classical works. I would definately want to hear more Viola concertos
Unparalleled performance! You can really appreciate Brahms with all the dissonance. The superb musicianship of soloists, orchestra and conductor makes Brahms Double Concerto melodious. This video is priceless for generations to come.
My favourite Brahms piece! :D This version I do find the best on the Youtube.

This is absolutely the best Brahms Op 102. I have ever heard. It is better than the CD.
I was also thinking how scary it is to be Julia's husband. She has so much talent, young, beautiful, world recognition, money and you name it.
Did I say she is extremely talented & gifted?
Her violin, a Guad, is worth US$2 to 3 mil, and she owns it.
She can easily intimidate a guy without trying.
I could have a heart attack just on the thoughts and fantasy alone.
Scary ! But I still love you, Julia.

cellist have as many solo works as violinists. The greatest concerto of all time was composed for cello. (Dvorak)

And Beethoven's Triple Concerto?
And this Double of Brahms?
And Beethoven's Violin Concerto?
I think that Dvorak's Cello concerto is great, but maybe not the best, (I am cellist)
