For the people that are bitching about this mission, I have a few things to tell you.

1 - This can be skipped, so calm down.

2 - You don't have to kill people, you can just let Makarov do it, the objective is to follow his lead

3 - Finally, if you don't know the story, then you have no reason to complain. Inifinity Ward used this mission as part of Makarov's plans to start a war, as well as to make the player hate him and develop an excellent antagonist for the game and sequel. So grow up.

The only thing I learned from the response to this game is that a lot of people seem to think killing certain sides/people is justified while other sides aren't.

I'm not defending anything- I just think it's a bit upsetting that murder of human life in one-context is perfectly okay, but in others it's damn right "disturbing".

Perhaps if humans viewed murder in the same manner all the time, we wouldn't have many of the problems we do.

@TheDARIEN54321 In the first Modern Warfare, two sequences were just as disturbing: when you play the president Al Fulani getting executed, and the other when you play as an USMC soldier. You're the only one who survived a nuclear explosion, dying of the radiations and staring a desperate landscape with a huge atomic mushroom. All those moments are in my opinion here to recall one simple point, war as only got a legitimate place in video games :)

I don't think people fully understand why this scene was so bad. It's not just because it's civilians that are dying, it's how the entire scene plays out. GTA has always suffered from being a bit of a joke and the character's are usually somewhat comical. The game usually doesn't take itself seriously. However, Modern Warfare has a much more believable depiction of characters. They seem more human than the NPCs in GTA. This is why some people took offence to this mission.
