  • Ummmm this is so destructurated, ummm, music. I personnally, without intention on harmy anyones feelings, just want to bit through the table. This is causing weird waves in my brain. I am an opened person to new styles of music, but i just can't stand it.

Just came to check Esperanza Spalding though.

  • Aprendendo a gostar muito dessa moça. Uma palavra pra definir esse talento ... encantador

  • Its funny how a song can sound PRETTY but when you read & hear the lyrics WOW ... I appreciate this song and its sentiments as someone saw fit to send it to me *blush* ... Thanks!!!!! #AbsolutelyBeautiful<3

  • jakieś gejostwo

  • @ JazzyFaReal ~ Yea your JazzyFaReal!!! True Jazz Connoissuer! You'll appreciate & enjoy capital jazz lounge at live365.com

  • Beautiful.. Sooooooooooooo much better than all the other stuff that's going around!!!

  • I love these lyrics

  • Love her! So underrated.

  • @4099aj underrated? Didn't she win some kind of award not too long ago? LOL

  • the female Reggie Watts right here.

  • super!!!

  • She is quite lovely isn't she?! This is just beautiful....we need much much more of this foundational music. There is far too much hip hop, pop, rock...this is the origin of / the root of it all and she is very gifted

  • @HearNSee1 She is truly great but that comment you made is meaningless.

its not about the genre... fundament... its just good music ok

  • @huntedrasta I said FOUNDATIONAL music and it is quite fundamental in my opinion...which by the way, I am entitled to have, just as you are entitled to have your obvious opinions about my comment. Who are you ro say what I said is meaningless?? Stick to your own perceptions and let others have theirs. Jeez, I wrote this over 4 months ago. There are 5 thumbs up on the comment. Why does what I said bother you so anyway? It is a free forum remember? And yes, it is good music!.

  • @HearNSee1 I can see why my reply to your comment bothered you. And its no big deal, but what I disliked is this: "there is far too much hip hop, pop, rock... this is the origin of" blah blah... this is not the origina! this is new music... although in many ways it goes back to some of the roots (mainly jazz) there is no denying the influences of modern pop and hip hop... you make it sound like anything hip hop or pop must be less good than a more "old school" genre. anyhow, peace out

  • @HearNSee1 As you said, it is no big deal. I'm sorry you feel I came off as dismissive when it comes to rap &,hip hop,pop,rock....other genre's in general. I love all genre's of music. Jazz/instrumental is the root of which I was speaking and in the context of the conversation on the boards at the time, we were discussing Esperanza's win over Justin Bieber. at the Grammy's.& how Jazz is often overlooked for hip hop, rock, pop ,etc. Not upset at all. Just nice 2 see her win Peace & Light

  • @HearNSee1 Ok I like that much better now! Glad to have this discussion, and to see more like-minded individuals. Keep spreading the Light. Peace & Hip Hop

  • @huntedrasta Hugs to you. I am glad we were able to clear that up. All genre's of music deserve to not only survive...but thrive.

    xoxo

  • im grooving 2 this piece.i would to see her do a duet with kem.it would be WONDERFUL!

  • she deserve every Grammy in this world!!!

  • @emmangcs ~ Exactly! Absolutely Amazing! Beautiful!...I can go on and on..

  • 31 knob-heads clicked the wrong button.

  • she makes beautiful music.this song is amazing.

  • @EthanFCarr Yeah, I never said Esperanza was mainstream. But I do agree though, she has the most amazing voice.

  • ;P Listening to this makes me consider why I took band over orchestra...

  • @Supreme0417 geez, what a wanker...

  • She can sing but i need to find a better song. Its nice but it feels like hotel nightclub music.BUt she got a real good voice. Its like whats her name from groove theroy Amel lauriexx I think

  • I don't really like jazz, but I do like esperanza spalding.

  • I find this easy to masturbate to.

  • Ahhh~ PURE music =]

  • I'm Proud to have the name Hope(Esperanza) .

  • Honestly, i find percussion and drums quite overplayed. Nevermind though, i still like it.

  • @chicslt really? i find it to have alot of pop, i kind of syncapaited groove. i love it! (:

  • im going to see her perform october 10th

  • I love Esperanza Spalding.

She is so under rated, but super amazing!!

I'm so happy she won the Grammy, she deserved it

  • esperanza means hope in spanish...jeje :)

  • I started to listen to a few of her songs and there is no denying she had talent but then they all started to sound the same. i appreciate a few of her songs but there is something so bland about her album on a whole. i like that she is pure music though. its certainly refreshing.

  • I'm so happy she beat justin beaver. She's amazing

  • Music should bring together not divide. Bieber nor any other artist has anything to do really with what Esperanza is doing. The beauty of it is that we have the freedom to listen to a myriad of artists as we like. This is HER music to be enjoyed and we appreciate her for HER talent. We can appreciate others as well. But I don't see the majority of Bieber fans as jazz aficionados so much as an appreciater of the man himself. We can love more than one genre and one artist at a time.

  • yeah she does sound like Amel Larrieux, what ever happened to her?

  • it seems to me esperanza spalding is spending a lot of her time contributing to the beauty and soulfulness of this world, and very little of her time trash talking justin bieber.

  • Justin Bieber plays piano, guitar, drums, and trumpet, Lady Gaga plays the keyboard, piano, and synthesizer and writes her own songs and so does Ke$ha. Having talent doesn't mean one thing, there's many ways a person can be 'talented.' I like all these artists because they are all talented in their own unique way.

  • This is my song! Thank God she one the grammy because Justin Bieber is not all that good, shoot that boy don't even look or talk like he hit puberty.

  • Dont know how I found this video ,but VERY VERY glad I did!!

  • I love this music!

  • Why are people talking about Justin Bieber on an Esperanza Spalding song? I know she won the grammy award for best new artist over him, but do we have to talk about him? I swear he seems to come up on every song on youtube in some comment.

Oh, and for the record Lady Gaga plays piano and there are plenty of pop artists that play instruments and are quite talented. Pop music is image driven though, but you know you can enjoy multiple genres of music right?

  • wow SO FREKIN GOOD :D

  • who can possibly dislike this beautiful song????? what a voice!!!!!!!!! shes A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!!

  • I'll take this over any popular "artist" out there right now any day. Talented would be an understatent.

  • @SpicyTofuZ9 yaaaa, that didn't make sense

  • bass players represent! xD

  • This is some good chill music but this ain't getting a party started, that's for damn sure.

  • @Omegax9000 hahahaahahah!!!!!!

  • I love her uniqueness. She is very very talented!

  • @Supreme0417 Esperanza Spalding indeed is an extremely talented girl. As well as these other 'mainstream' artists that you speak of (btw, all three of them do play instruments). Is it not so difficult to see that other people have different tastes in music? No, I don't think so. So stop being so stereotypical hipster about this and just enjoy the kind of music you like. Okay? Okay.

  • @MsThophie Hate to say it, but this is not mainstream. However, her voice is beautiful and she is extremely talented. I completely agree with your views on listening to the music you like. However, she isn't mainstream. A Selena Gomez song, with a great chord progression stolen from the song 'Avon' by Queens of the Stone Age, gets 3 million views on the first day it comes out. Esperanza isn't mainstream is all I'm saying.

  • @EthanFCarr Selena Gomez? Are you serious? Don't you dare to compare this singer and style to that bullshit! go to the kindergarden, play with toys and listen to Gomez! yak!

p.s. kindergarden for tasteless! My kids will never listen to Timberlake, Britney and Gomez-like b'shit!

  • Comment removed

  • @virtual7insanity if u dont like selena gomez or whatever artist keep it to yourself.& trust me your kids are not gonna listen to your taste in music.get over it

  • @MsThophie This reminds me so much of Amana Melome...youtube(dot)com/watch?v=vAfn0jtfEnE

  • What has our society come to? This beautiful example of real pure music dosen't even get half a million views but Waka Flaka Lame generates over 30 million?!

  • just listening to this amazing artist and wondering why so many Lady Gaga/Justin Bieber comments?

it would be like reading comments about Madonna or the Monkees while listening to Miles Davis or Aretha Franklin.

  • I love this woman.

  • she is so talented, and can play several instuments and can sing, this what we should be looking for in music artists today, not lame justin bieber or rebecca black!!!

  • My Nation My Girl... Brazil FAVELA FAVELA FAVELA FAVELA FAVELA FAVELA

  • Double post for the win...

In any case, Esperanza's voice and instrumental talent give her an A+ in my book. She's a beautiful musician.

  • Long live berklee!!!

    Great artist and excellent music.

  • THIS. IS. AWESOME. so beautiful.

i hope she goes really far.

    she deserves it.

  • i mean as a jazz head its not my favorite kind of music...its a lil poppy for my taste but i do have a lot of respect for her and im super glad she won the grammy over jbiebs

  • I am not going to lie I came in here thinking she was bad because i thought some songs justin beiber songs were good. Bot holy crap she is extremely talented and she makes some of the best recent jazz music in my opinion

  • WOW she's amazing.

  • i think it is awesome that esperanza spalding won. shes better than justin beaver, thats for sure, she has real talent, not auto-tuned digitally enchanced bull. good job esperanza!! :D

  • @MohawkTurtleFilms

had to be her or mumford

  • and another thing these beliebers saying that justin and gaga play instruments thats all good but if they actually focus on their talent instead of singing garbage that is egged on by their recording label then people would take them as seriously as Miss Spalding.

  • what a beautiful voice and talent i once again have faith in music

  • laaawd ha'mercy! My kinda music! the way it starts off funk, soul jazz, then go in2 a latin flavour. ahhhhhh REAL MUSIC!!! : )

  • Okay, I know this has nothing to do with anything, but I need help. I heard this song on the radio on my way to work and i heard a song that is stuck in my head, here are the lyrics...

I'm all about him him him him him, and he's all about me me me me me and we don't give a dang dang dang dang dang about nobody y y y y...

If you know what the song is please reply.

  • Justin Bieber and that other Drake dont make music (for the fans of those two, trust me, you will "get it" when you are about 10 years older) Esperanza makes REAL MUSIC, something your testosterone/adrenaline/starbuck/facebook overloaded juvenile brains cant understand just yet... give it time... and about 10 years.

  • Yess thank you for picking Esperanza Spalding grammys! Nice and professional no gimmicks like the commercial mainstream bullshit. this is straight up true music.

  • Beiber and Drake fan's dislikes are useless to the goddess Esperanza.

  • @xDDG0928 Thank you!

  • one word....

    prodigy!

she taught herself how to play i think violin at age 5!!!!!!

  • I assume the grammys woke you guys up because Esparanza had been out since 2008, yall are LATE!!!

  • Wow, beliebers are actually still mad over Ms.Spalding winning the grammy? I'm sure justin beiber moved on.

  • Finally, modern music with rhythm.

  • This is the first time that I've listened to her, and I honestly did not expect her to be this good. Although I don't usually listen to jazz, (soul jazz? I do listen to some swing) this song is really catchy, and she has such a dainty and pretty voice. Good for her that she won her award. She deserved it.

  • I'm baffled as to how someone could actually "dislike" this...must be the Bieber fans.

    ^_^

  • It takes beyond pure talent to write a song like this

  • sound a lil bit like bossanova.....good music finally :P

    regards from chile

  • i love it! such a smooth, jazzy sound, among my favorites. i'm happy she won the grammy, she deserves it :)

  • @Supreme0417 actually Lady Gaga aka Stephanie Germanotta is quite the pianist. Search 'stephanie germanotta' on youtube. But I agree on your other points. haha

  • @Supreme0417 Look dude..I love Esperenza but could you please rephrase your self with the whole " Lady GaGa and Justin Bieber don't play instruments" Sweetheart..Justin plays Drums,Trumpet,Violin,Guitar and piano...Lady GaGa play's piano. I love all music..why? because it's music..its lyrical..so some respect for everyone if you can.

  • @Supreme0417 uh justin bieber is amazing at the drums and he plays the drums and the pianos shut the fuck no need to hate and lady gaga plays the piano too.

  • @TheCandygirl115 please dont defend beaver, karma's a bitch and idk but im pretty sure you will end up getting hit by a car for you bad taste :)

  • @mikesandytoes im not defending him just telling the truth i totally think esparanza duz she is deserved the grammy cuz she is great but justin bbieber is not that bad he has a lot of talents and so does lady gaga just because they are pop stars doesnt mean shit no need to hate them cuz of these stereotypes people have about them .

  • @Supreme0417 Lady gaga plays the piano.. just saying. :)

But I do agree with you.

  • @Supreme0417 i agree with everything you say, but lady Gaga, i do not like her music and thing she's ugly as hell, but I do think that she is a talented artist with good musical credentials

  • @Supreme0417 ALthough Im not that much of a Just fan he does play guitar, piano, and grums. But your right about all the others. imo

  • @Supreme0417 Lady Gaga plays the piano... and was a song writer far before she actually became famous for singing her own music. I don't always agree with the image she presents but I think Lady Gaga is an inspired musician that produces fun, catchy music.

It helps to do research before posting.

  • @Supreme0417 I'm with you on certain parts of what you said, except that you are misinformed about Lady Gaga not playing any instruments. She plays piano, just for future reference.

  • @Supreme0417 LADY GAGA PLAYS THE PIANO AND A LIL VIOLIN.

  • @LadyGagaBigCrowd

Lady GaGa is a popstar who plays piano and "a lil" violin. Esperanza is a bassist, singer, and (most importantly) musician.

  • @TheDionysiac I'm just saying. Esperanza is more of a musician. Lady gaga is an artist

  • @LadyGagaBigCrowd Lady GaGa is hardly an artist; at best an entertainer. A sex clown who baffles the public into an orgiastic haze of primal base and animal intoxication. Of course, she's no different from any of the other doubly formulaic "artists" on the scene.

  • @TheDionysiac Im just a kid and u made me cry

  • @LadyGagaBigCrowd lol glad he did

  • @Supreme0417 Though i agree with your point, lady gaga does play the piano at a lot of her gigs :D that is all, continue on

  • @Supreme0417 Though I do agree with your point, Lady Gaga does play the piano at a lot of her gigs :D That is all, carry on

  • @Supreme0417 Lady Gaga plays the piano like a G. If you don't believe me watch any of her live videos of paparazzi. You have just been proved wrong.

  • @Supreme0417 and you're pissed off cause you can't get old desperate horny 84yr olds to go to bed with you. HAHA, gaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

  • @Supreme0417 not a huge fan of his but I'm sure he plays several instruments.

  • @Supreme0417 Actually Gaga plays the piano HAHA

  • @Supreme0417 EXCUSE ME? Did u just say Lady Gaga doesn't play instruments?? Are you serious? How dumb are you?!?!?!? Watch her live performances and listen to her music; she plays piano. Shes megatalented ok, do NOT place her in the same category as that talentless goon Justin. Gaga has an amazing voice, she writes her own music, plays piano, sings live, and dances very fucking well WHILE singing live. Ok so dont go off saying she isnt talented cuz that makes u look like an idiot.

  • @purpledino167 FLAMER! also, i lol'd at calling jb a goon

  • @Supreme0417 HEY! JB, ke$ha and gaga all play instruments ;) and despite their horrible lyrics (except for gaga, for the most part) they stay on pitch just like pretty much every other artist famous enough to know.

  • @Supreme0417 justin bieber does play instruments!!! he plays piano, guitar, drums, and trumpet!! maybe his voice is pitchy coz his voice started cracking and changing!!!

but im not saying that he should have won!!! im justin biebers fan and i can honestly say that he is not that talented but im not his fan because of his music im his fan because of the inspiration that i get from him!!!

  • @jbhann Oooooh justin bieber "plays" drums, guitar, and trumpet & Lady Gaga plays Keys (keyboard/piano/synth are the same thing moron, no need to make it redundant). Retarded monkeys can play piano and drums the way these pop stars do. Trumpet I'm actually impressed with; which songs does J.B. play trumpet on? Don't defend these pop stars, they all suck. Ke$ha's and lyrics suck monstrous ass. Lady Gaga's Hitchcock references actually merit some respect, but for the most part are bland.

  • @Arcadeburner1 u noe i dont care about lady gaga and kesha and justin isnt that good at trumpet but he can play piano and has played it since he was 5, and started playing drums when he was 2 and guitar later came later. I came here to listen this song coz i looveeee jazz music!! like not to diss Esperanza! and please dont judge him coz u know nothing about him. I dont go around and judge artist even if they are bad coz i dont know them, so please dont judge them!!!

  • @Supreme0417 Lady Gaga actually plays the piano and writes her own music. Fyi.

  • @Supreme0417 Actually Lady gaga plays Piano extremely well. Not really disagreeing with your main point, but she does.

  • @Korberos Most educated musicians can play the piano--maybe not with skill or conviction, but it's not a very difficult instrument to learn. It's hard to master, but most music students can play somewhat fluently on the piano, just because it's quite helpful in learning music and music theory. Compared to pop-stars, Gaga's a god, because Pop is an image-driven genre, and she sure does have image. But if you want to compare her to pianists and other genres of musicians, she's trash.

  • @Mikeinatorable Lady Gaga began playing piano when she was 4 and was accepted in to Julliard for piano (but instead went Tisch at 17)

  • @christianwmarshall I see. I'll be sure to see her when she plays with the New York Philharmonic next time.

  • @Mikeinatorable That's entirely unrelated.

  • @Korberos Let's see how she does over Giant Steps.

  • @Supreme0417 Lady Gaga is a pianist. She actually went to NYU's Tisch School of Music, she's relatively skilled.

  • Personally, I don't care for neither her nor Justin Bieber. When you were cultivated on the sounds of Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Spiro Gyra, Chick Corea and Dizzie Gillespie, my ears take a little more work to please. While I dig the instrumental arrangements, her flat nasally vocals leave a lot to be desire. The success of her and Justin Bieber shows the tone deafness of the new generation, and is a cry out for people to get back to what music is supposed to be: an art form, not a cash cow.

  • @Supreme0417 That's rather myopic. Looks like someone need to do a bit more growing up.

  • WHERE IS THE LOVE BUTTON!!!

  • I like this.

  • Didn't know about her until the Grammys, but I LIKE THIS! A LOT. She gets 2 thumbs up already for edging out Bieber...lol

  • A collaboration between young jazz trumpeter David Dunbar (google) in Denmark and Esperanza would be off the charts. He is also host of the Maddog and Dave TV show. They could be called The Essie & Dave collabo.

    -------Baton Rouge, LA

  • Not my style at all but i most def see amazing talent at work here

  • I respect this woman alot haha. what an inspiring talent.

  • People are saying that Justin Bieber shouldnt have been nominated for best new artist bcuz hes been famous to long but this girl has been famous for two years also

  • This is music, folks. GREAT music.

  • I'm not really into jazz at all... but she's actually really good! i think its good she won a grammy. justin is popular enough... i think someone else should get the spotlight for a change. i love justin bieber too though!

  • I didn't hear about her until the recent Grammy's show and I must say I love her fluid, jazzy style and her voice is like the ocean, brings Amel Larrieux to mind. Btw, when it comes to the Biebs I really wish people would lay off. His name comes up in every video I come across. These two artists are in completely different lanes so how can you even begin to compare them?

  • not to take anything away from her talent, but how does someone win best "new" artist with their third album, I still haven't figured that one out yet

  • @unkomon go to Grammy's website and look at the eligibility criteria and then you will understand.

  • This is so fantastic! It's a strange combo to me. Playing the upright bass and singing... and yet it's sounds so good! =)

  • she's really great :)

I think there is still hope for our country

plaudits to the brilliant people that chose her for grammys :D

  • Ok we get the point. She won a grammy. That's great, but Bieber doesn't need to be bashed. He's very talented. He also plays instruments in addition to singing so I don't see why people have to keep bringing him up.

This is about Esperanza and how incredible she is in her own right - not how incredible she is in comparison to Bieber

  • I'm extremely glad she won the grammy over popular artists, and it's sad that REAL music like this isn't displayed more on tv while poser artists who are only famous by other mainstream bublegum singers get promotions everyday :(

    Esperanza all the way!

  • @frankisbored

Bless I mon! Some one who finally speak truth!

  • @frankisbored When she won the Grammy over the 'Beebs' (don't worry, not a Bieber/currnt pop music fan) I had KNOW IDEA who she was or how immense her effortless talent was! Congrats!

  • In the words of the late Bobby Womack....."you're just not commercial", I'm a jazz fan, but she will starve looking for commercial success. If I might suggest a collaberation with bassist Stanley Clark, who had some success. Best wishes to Esperanza, I hope I'm wrong.

  • @rhurt87058: I'll bet money you are wrong, except for the starvation that nearly EVERY jazz artist experiences until they reach the top of the heap. She is talented AND pretty. That's a powerful combination. Collaborate with Stanley Clarke? Wouldn't surprise me. Established artists love bringing along the new talent to sell albums and keep getting the gigs. Remember how Ray Brown (bassist extraordinaire) did that with Diana Krall and his "Some of my Best Friends Are" albums?

  • @rhurt87058 the thing is im pretty sure she's NOT looking for commercial success, i think for her mostly its about making music and playing which she loves to do, i mean this girl has already played for the president i don't think there's any better recognition then that

  • @ncasey31693 Well Spoken Dude!!

  • I'm quite a big fan of Justin Bieber's but I'm glad she won the Grammy because her sound is truly unique-she deserves it!

  • There is hope after all. This is beautiful.

Makes me wanna check out some SADE

  • @glinxz I did that a few days ago, for old times sake lol.

  • This young lady deserve this Grammy. Here is a woman that spend all her teenage years studying music and playing among the best. this is the kind of people that need to be called HERO.or I should say SHERO

  • i usually dont like this music but i like her

  • this song is hot. didnt know her until the grammy win..was upset at first but i truly see that she had a well deserved win...music lives on...correction Real Music

  • even in a Esperaza Spalding's video people are argueing about Justin Bieber??

    grow up, please

  • @pedrohrc91 Idk what the big deal is, even before I knew who Esperanza was, I thought that Drake was the one to take victory. And I don't even listen to rap or any of that stuff.

Btw props for Esperanza again 8O.

  • she's absolutley amazing :) and the way Justin Bieber dealt with his loss very admirably, haters stop yo hatin ;)

  • Her acceptance sppech was freakin adorable!! Love her :)

  • Very much well deserved recipient of the Grammy. I'm happy for her. I just cant believe it took so long for a jazz artist to finally win in the new artist category.

  • It was so nice to see her, as a jazz musician win a Grammy. Ok her song doesn't have an elector synthesized dance beat, but there's too much of that in this homogenized modern musical world.

  • I've spent most of my life listening to circular music, now i have started listening to jazz music i have found that jazz music unlike pop music is timeless music that can pass down generations without being called outdated. Jazz is so elegant and soul uplifting, it makes me want to dance to the rhythm. I found that Jazz calms me down and puts me in a more thoughtful mind set. This lady is the future of jazz music

  • Esperanza is not only a super talented jazz artist but she is super smart. At 16 she entered college and at 20 she was a professor teaching at Berkly University. Although she is very gifted she is also very humble, which is nice to see in a young person theses days.

  • @Psalms11817 Yes she's amazing btw it's Berklee college of music not Berkley U. 2 completely different schools

    :)

  • Agreed, her grammy was well deserved. But I always thought the Grammys was a big popularity contest. Can't blame the teeny boppers for being mad.

  • eh, not my type of music, but beautiful voice. she deserved to win.
