    The reason why many Chinese characters seem similar is because of simplification. Traditional Chinese is different.

    As far as I know, I've never met a single Chinese speaker who don't understand the difference heh.

  • @DeepSage You ain't know language. In all the languages that I know, words have multiple meanings. Besides, the 2nd dong xi is pronounced differently from the first one. Not only the pronunciation, but the context will tell you whether the speaker means "east and west" or "things". It's no different from any other language. For example, I could have used the word "tongue" instead of "language" but it would be understood I meant "language" instead of that organ in your mouth.
