i live on the james river in eagles rock and ive had success with jigs and small crank baits but the best thing to use is a zoom u - tale pumpkin chartreuse and pinch off the end about a quarter of the way down and use a small jig head and attach a small trailor hook before it gets to the tail and it catches em all!
eagle rock-buchanan section? ran it last month caught two little ones...then found out about the fish kill like the one plagueing the shenandoah...thanks to the turkey shit being spead, the New might be the last kickass smallie river left in the state!
well, i am a Clinch River man, myself. Ive lived my entire life right on its banks, about 50 feet from its flood state limits. The trick is to REALLLY know the water you are fishing. There have been 2 big fish kills in the past 25 years here, because of their precious power plants, but if you get really well acquainted with the local structure, and depths, you can have a BALL out here on the Clinch.

i wish more people would use barbless hooks or pich it down

Depending on the size of the hook I pinch mine down a bit. Still barbed but comes out easier.
