  • great playing

  • Sco is amazing. Really a unique player....and amazing! Hard to find your own unique voice on guitar or any instrument for that matter and Sco has done that!!

  • I recommend Choi Woo Joon - Jang nan III

  • bill stewart is a monsterrr

  • Comment removed

  • Better than any player who plays millions of notes!!!

  • I can't stop listening to this. Sco is just...well....the best. His use of dissonance is hard to believe. So sick nasty amazing dank nuggets.

  • What genre of jazz is this? fusion?

  • @Paiste01

    jazz.

  • @Paiste01 This is in the great music genre, very rare these days!

  • еще чуть чуть и я буду подпевать

    This is the end

    Beautiful friend

    The end

  • Some really good stuft f but at some point it honestly sounds like it could have been a sts hoax even though I don't believe it is. Really good overall but some really messed up parts too. Regards.

  • @ickefes Thats exactly whats nice about scofield, hes not that afraid of "messing up". Its really something to let go of that fear up to the point of "messing up" live, as you said. And, on top of that, when he lands a nasty note or something, hes comes back like a real motherfukin boss.

  • Sometimes you just gotta sit back and watch scofield tear that 6-string a new one.

  • Thats a hell of a shred! :D

  • shock!

  • Great music is not about just notes but silence too and this trio really knows how to use it ... shear pleasure!

  • Yeah, Steve Swallow is a god. I've been tripping on him ever since I first saw him more than 20 years ago when he accompanied Carla Bley on David Sanborn's TV show. Wow. In fact, I think I have it somewhere on VHS tape.

Sco is the master. There's no one like him. But he's so subtle and deep that a lot of people don't "get" him. I used to get pissed at MMW fans when I would hear young idiots saying things like "why are they playing with that old guy." I'm sure MMW would be pissed too.

  • Steve is like a Zen master.

  • Steve Swallow is jammin like a boss

  • Thumbs up for Steve Swallow, guys!

  • That drummer's style reminds me of Rob Garcia

  • just superb I'd say. Scofield is my favorite improvisation player ever, awsome.

  • YEAH! Practice time.

  • ... and for us guys that hit things ... uhh ...ya got any gum? Mixa whatian? You guys are awesome!!! Killin' band!!! So out and so brilliantly in.

  • the girl at 8:29 is too concerned with her chin hair to clap.

  • @pfarnac1

She is entranced and hypnotized by the music. We can see what she's doing...but she doesn't know what she is doing or where she is. She is blinded by the music and is in Heaven.

  • A: G#m7 / G#m6 (G#m Dorian/Mel.minor)

    B: E7/9/13(+11) (E Myxo/Lyd.b7) C#m7 F#7 (C# Dorian-ii/V in B Maj) A 4-3 or G/A (A Myxo/G Lyd.),but @ 1:32 he plays A7+11(A Lyd.dom)or E Mel.minor, since it resolves back to G#m.

  • @egyptianminor I meant Abm7, since he plays Dorian based lines over it, implying this chord is a ii degree mode, hence from Gb Major/Ionian- I chord, hence more appropriate to refer to the G#m7 as Abm7

  • Bravo!!! Tova se slusha zadaljitelno sas wiski i dve buchki led ::))))

  • yikes

  • is jazz another word for dissonance?

  • John The Magical ... I still have that Go Go cd ... love it.

  • John The Magical

  • I don't know why people get the assumption that if somebody studies music that at that point music no longer becomes meaningful. It is a ridiculous assumption rooted in contempt. It would be like saying if I were to study auto mechanics I would no longer enjoy country drives on sunday afternoons.

    >

I also don't know why talking about a songs musical fundimentals can be interprited as pseudo-intellectual dick-swagger. If people didn't study music today where would tomorrow's music come from?

  • @TheApocalyptical1

Thanks for blowing the whistle on these guys who are too lazy to be bothered learning about the mechanics of music. These are the same guys who say if i understand what the notes are behind a chord or scale, it is "not playing from the heart".

sorry boys, that is lazy pure and simple. Claiming that someone is a pseudo-intellectual because they have some knowledge just holds us all back as musicians . WAKE UP

  • Can all of you losers stop talking about theory and what the fucks goin on!? Your probably those people who sit right in the front of a club and instead of listening you analyze everything, then after the show pester the musicians about their gear or what it was they were playing. Its assholes like you that treat Jazz as an intellectual biggest dick competition instead of art.

  • @THeDUDe21892 you dont have to read every comment if you dont want to...they arent impeding your beautiful life journey, and their analyzing probably isnt impeding theirs either

  • This has got to be one of the best trios of the past ten years.

  • There used to be a "guitar play along' video for this song (album version) which had the bass line and guitar line animated on a blank screen. I can't find it now. Does anyone know the location of this or could someone repost it?

    >

I don't know of any other song.composer that has so many "hooks". Sadly jazz today rarely has hooks, "jazz musicians" seem to have become overly white, overly academic who compose from the top down. while these compositions work, they have no organic character.

  • @TheApocalyptical1

sorry for the post before i just read your other post and realize you don't listen to/appreciate jazz, so please disregard my posts as they don't apply to you. Have an awesome day and please no more comments on jazz videos, thanks

  • @fourfinger451 how did you realize i don't like or listen to jazz? Did you hack into my sysstem and see I have only 11,000 Jazz tracks in my i-tunes?

  • @fourfinger451 You don't need to apoligize for the before comment, if you had any decency you would for this one though. Do you think posting blanket assumptions proves yourself intellectually supierior to me? Do you think making hateful, know-it-all comments makes your argument about whether the song is G# or Ab look any less ridiculous?

  • @TheApocalyptical1 the discussion was about Lydian or Dorian.. that's whats important. THAT's how he saw you don't appreciate (or study) jazz

  • That's not exactly V7, but rather subV7 (should be Bbb7 - enharmonic spelling A).

  • @gidolf do you have any idea what your talking about?... i didn't think so ;)

  • @fourfinger451 gidolf was kindly correcting your mistake, his information is correct. what is the saying about no good deed going unpunished...The bridge is G# Lydian with G# minor pentatonic and some phrasing from F# Dorian.

  • @TheApocalyptical1

sorry if this comes out bad or starts a stupid music war, but I'm in deep rage right now

THE BRIDGE IS NOT IN G# LYDIAN i don't know where your reading these charts from, but i am actually using my EARS, in any case the bridge is largely atonal but does indeed turn back to Ab Dorian (its in Ab definitely not in G#), its not sub but i see how it could be analyzed as on as sco does use the #11 from ALTERED in his solo, please as i try to tell my student USE YOUR EARS!!!!!

  • @fourfinger451 Well, as a matter of fact, I do. But thanks for your initial posting of the pitches (I hope that's the correct term in English - what I mean are the references to the parent scale in Roman numerals).

  • @fourfinger451 Figures the correct term is degree. Live and learn.

  • b-e-a-u-tiful.

  • whoops the start of the "bridge-y' part has four bars of Esus then the rest of the bridge

  • @jdra182

as far as i can tell the tonality is ab minor (dorian) then the "bridge-y' part goes Iv minor, bVii, iv minor, v7 which turns back to the top.

  • I like this, has a very old school style and also a nice warm guitar sound as well.

  • nice !... I like green tea です.

  • @maidoodesu みどりのおちゃ Not too sure about that one though ;)

  • does anyone know the chords to this tune???????????? PLZ

  • does anyone know the chords to this tune???????????? PLZ

  • does anyone know how/where to get a copy of the dvd of this concert? thanks!

  • The term raunchy was meant for John Scofield.

  • Scofield's soloing has such incredible depth, and the energy from the musical synthesis among the 3 is so palpable, it makes you go into high.

  • great!

  • This is sick!! Such great players...

  • Total funkified kick-ass tone-to-the-bone no-holds-barred freedom to explore while escorting the auto-tuned nation to the door.

  • @altfam56

    what he said!

  • amazing..and yes, dirty!

  • Hear lots of quotes in this one - I was made for lovin' you; Son of a preacher man... maybe I'm going crazy.

Off to see the JS trio in one week, can't wait

  • I heard them last night. Such a tight band, such an amazing guitar player. Only an hour-long set but one of the best gigs of my life. THX JS, SS, BS!!

  • I heard them last night. Such a tight band, such an a mazing guitar player. Only an hour-long set but one of the best gigs of my life. THX JS, SS, BS!!

  • the art of the right moment - that´s jazz!

  • I WOULD DESCRIBE IT: LA MERMA DE LA MERMA !!!!!!

  • This is great music but I dont understand why this guys fans were hating on jojo mayer and johnny rabb... i mean, they weren't even doing jazz, they were doing breaks & dnb groves?

  • man, that's PURE GROOVE right there !

  • fantastic to hear it live, but i do miss mmw's unique sound on this song

  • @firedancerart still, this is refreshing. Scofield plays this style well even without an organ backing him up, his sound his so full it sounds more than a trio... It's nice there's more than one version for this number.

  • Comment removed

  • Damn, it sounds like either the guitarist has a bad tone, or he;s hitting the very left of the fret(which makes an unappealing vibrating noise :p)

  • @Holycrap27 i'm sure he was trying to make that sounds. Scofield is amazing.

  • @Holycrap27 I like to think that those who enjoy Sco's music or are influnced by him in their playing are "musically intellectual". Clearly you are not one of these people. Sco's tone has a bite unlike any other, and obviously you can't handle it. So go back to listening to smooth jazz while you pee sitting down.

  • @Holycrap27 Unappealing to whom? Maybe you should listen more and talk less.

  • The Scho man is a revolutionary. He slaps mainstream music in the face and dares to redefine all genres that pigeonhole what is "normal" in the world of music. I saw this guy at the 2009 Jazzfest in NOLA; what a fucking show! I missed out on a lot of great playing over the years, but not anymore.

  • Yeah, fantastic trio but I think Steve Swallow is the most underrated bassist on the planet. I'm about to have a green tea and a nice toke.

  • @FunkySkunk90 How about Dave Holland? :)

  • @jacobe888

Do you think DH is underrated ? Most people listening to his works do appreciate him. Dave Holland is one of the finest bassists ever.

  • @FunkySkunk90 I don't know is he underrated...I just think that he's one of the best I've ever heard. (with upright bass) :-)

  • all i can say wow

  • @spizznightelf so true

  • nasty

  • what amazes me is how sco is so fearless in his playing. he knows how good he is

  • superbe....höörä gäil!! uhörä trio!!!!!

  • i love scofields style its sounds like a very creative guy on drugs haha

  • @snubbs741, I was just thinking the same thing. Reminds me of Tom Waits.

  • @doublealufwaffe HA!! Sco is the Tom Waits of guitar!!! PERFECT!!!! LOL!

  • john scofied!!!! La putamadre! No podes tocartanto man!!!...Me rompes la cabeza!...Porsuerte los pude ver en bs as hace 2 año y fuè maravilloso...

  • @huguitohernan es un animaal! ni parece esforzarse jaja!

  • even his voice has mad effects.

  • Lol, especially being able to keep focused when that feed-backs randomly happening - check out bill stewarts reaction at 2.45 ...'WTF' lol

  • Professionals.

  • bill stewart is so dirty

  • is there something wrong with the sound? is anyone else having the problem where the guitar sound is crackly?

  • nope, fine to me.

  • that's sco's sound. he uses distortion, and the bridge pickup.

  • Oh thanks, I've heard his other stuff but this one sounds like one of those "dubbed over" joke vids.

  • You know...this is the kind of groove and feel that makes pregnant mothers go into labor early. I mean you have Scofield the baddest bebop/soul/funk guitarist with his odd timing, Bill Stewart is so sick he sounds like he is playing notes...and Steve Swallow is showing bass players that how you hold down the low end...

  • @BassicallyChristian lol thats a good summary of whats going on here!

  • @BassicallyChristian Well did ou mean you liked it or not? lol

  • Bill Stewart . That's all ... just Bill Stewart .

  • Steve Swallow have an unique voice. He is one of yhe great Bass Player.

  • hope you listen to that in heaven,ANDREA love you 4 ever MARCO

  • that meters groove + falling-off-the-edge tone = sco kills

  • I like his comping with intervals and three note chords more than his single note lines...but they're great as well.

  • 3:25 best music orgasm face ever...

  • Steve swallow, tha bassist, used to play upright when he was younger... why he play now with a pick?? its some physical problem with his hand?? he is like...70 now

  • He just switched to electric in the 60's or 70's (I forget which) and stuck with it. He's always been using a pick on the electric.

  • He just preferred electric I guess. No physical problems with upright. He uses a pick also out of preference. It gets him close to an upright tone with an electric bass.

  • Just LISTEN to Steve Swallow's tone! Pick or no pick that is a PHAT sound he's got goin on! Anyone know what bass he's playing?

  • it's a citron with a high c im pretty sure.

  • Quite some montgomery in his solos :)

    Lovin it! :D

  • What guitar is John playing?

  • his old Ibanez as200 from the 80's... Ibanez have a scofield signature model out that with a few exceptions is exactly like the guitar above...

  • Thanks :)

  • get wooten over there on bass and you've got a combo.

  • damn yeah that would be great.

    or marcus miller

  • He man not be flashy, but he's so groovy and genius.

  • wow!

  • It's a semi-hollow, so if your drive is on, your aamp is tilted in a certain way and you're too close to it (as it seems to be the case for Sco here) you should expect some feedback...By the way, where's Part 4 of this DVD?

  • Well it's worked pretty well for him, not to mention Scofield could play on any guitar with any kind of sound and make it beautiful.

  • brilliant .. love the way Scofield sets up the change at 4:23

  • that was quite tasty-

  • Great video! Thanks for sharing this...

Eh? Are those feedback noises? I never thought an ibanez of that class still prone to this kind of feedback! Nevertheless, sco handled that reallly well!!!

  • i was wondering about the same thing, are they feedback noises?

  • I think that phantom 'wooooo' feedback adds to his overall character and when he rakes that arpeggio 1:49 it creeps in as if its answering his phrase, Scofield wins

  • yeah trully great musician! :)

happy to seen him in Java jazz jakarta :)

  • i would put the title of the song in de description...?

  • Master of Style.

  • good call but shitty screen name,.. be more original thats like sooo 2003...

  • hey, anything is more original than White311. So you picked a color and three numbers that 3 billion people use in that same order. Sorry to take a shizzle over this but introspection is a hefty tool in seeing the bullshit before it comes out on the computer screen. I'm a master of originality, don't you jive talk me like it's worth anything ...you did hurt my feelings a little bit thought.

  • Bill is one smooth rhythmicsayer

  • The best word to discribe this group is... "Dirty"

  • haha, agree :D

  • would this be a good or bad comment? "dirty" could definitely go both ways.

  • "bad." ;-)

  • John, esos anteojitos te hacen ver como un viejo choto.

    jajaja

Volvé a Argentina que quiero escucharteeee

    chauuuu

  • very nice played! good job!

  • So much better than the album version! I wish he would have cut lose on the A Go Go album a little more.

  • Raw

  • I used to play with Bill Stewart when he was just out of high school in Des Moines Iowa, 1985. He also played in top 40 bands around town at that time. Ironically, we were covering Scofield and Metheny tunes in that band.

  • My favourite trio :D yeah!!!!

  • Who is this drummer? He's incredible!!!

  • bill stewart

  • Great, pls listen to music via CD and this one is just to see how it was there in Blue Note NY

    Thks to all

  • Bill Stewart is incredible. words can't discribe.

  • I like it very much. The bass and drums line sounds a little bit like Samba or Bossa Nova to me. Very nice.

  • the bass dont have presence.

Ok, is Scofield´s band and he is a guitar player, but it´s almost a guitar/drum jam. When john is soloing is difficult to recognise the baseline/harmony behind

  • I can hear it... need to work on those ears?

  • "work on those ears"

    not the most original reply...isnt?

  • What would you prefer? Learn to listen? Turn up your volume? I can hear it fine... but I guess it's my spider senses.

  • Turn up the bass! This is music coming from the African-American tradition!

  • Swallow's bass sound is very low [frequency] - all the detail is way down there, not up high like an acoustic bass or a more traditional electric sound; trust me, it's a h u g e bass sound if you can reproduce it!

As someone's said, the blend between Sco and Swallow when Swallow goes up high is so complementary, it does sound like one incredible big guitar

  • That's why he's such a good Bass player for this group. He blends so well with Sco's playing, anchors the groove and gives Bill and Sco heaps of room to interact.

    Brilliant musicianship all round!!

  • How sick is that drum fill at 7:25? That's got to be one of the tastiest fills I've ever heard. DAMN

  • drummerinexile, check also jack dejohnette, brian blade and jan christensen they have extraordinary styles you might like and enjoy

  • pure, unadulterated stank

  • love that comment man!

  • Awesome stuff!

  • shreddin from bill stewart...absolutely amazing./....

anyone know what kit/cymbals hes using?

    preferably cymbals :D

  • Cymbals - Main Ride - K Custom Dry Complex Ride 22" (Med Thin)

The rest are all zildjian prototypes. And even the regular zildjians will sound different than the ones for sale because Bill hammers his cymbals even more after he gets them.

The drums are gretsch (not sure which series - probably usa custom)

His snare is a ludwig bronze hammered 6.5x14

  • this guy is beyond good or bad, if you like it listen
