3 years later she gave a concert at Covent Garden and also sang this, but this is a much better performance than that. The wobble has started here but is nowhere as pronounced as it became and was in 1962. Here Callas is 36 and to sing Elisabetta at that age is dodgy to say the least for most sopranos, but Callas always rushed in where angels feared to tread. With her chest voice few other sopranos could compete and here it is amazing. Her soft singing works better here but didn't at all in 1962
io di lirica non ne capisco piu' di tanto ma quando sento Maria Callas mi ritrovo gli occhi lucidi e la pelle d'oca. chi ha detto che la perfezione non esiste?
@dutchbaritone08 This is the actual soundtrack of the concert. The orchestra comes late at around 2:15 on the DVD I have, and that's exactly what happens here.
@dutchbaritone08 I honestly don't think it's from the Amsterdam concert. I just watched the DVD of this concert and compared the little orchestral flubs, as well as some of the ways Callas starts certain words on the DVD and this video, and they match perfectly. I think the audio quality might have been enhanced somewhat, but the singing is from Hamburg 1959.
@dutchbaritone08 I just got out the Amsterdam recording of this aria, and the orchestra doesn't flub their entrance (it's at 4:55 in the Amsterdam recording, including the introduction to the aria) as they orchestra did in Hamburg. Also in Amsterdam she attacks the final "Del Signor" cleanly on the Del, whereas here (and on my Hamburg DVD) she has a little "catch" before the Del. She also holds the Del much longer here than she does in Amsterdam. This soundtrack is Hamburg.
@dutchbaritone08 Again, I watched this almost frame by frame next to my EMI DVD of the concert, and the soundtrack is the same, all the way down to the mistakes. On YouTube, it's not uncommon to get video and audio slightly out of sync, but the singing, accents, and orchestral mistakes match the 1959 Hamburg performance on the EMI DVD exactly. I have been listening to Callas for over 30 years, so I think I'm pretty comfortable comparing the two soundtracks.
@dutchbaritone08 But did you honestly go to those two particular spots to which I pointed and compare the Amsterdam version, the DVD version, and this version side by side? In Amsterdam, the Orchestra doesn't flub, but here and on the DVD it does. And Callas's last phrase is different in Amsterdam and on DVD, but DVD and this video match in these two particular spots which are unique to Hamburg. I didn't disagree with you until I listened and compared this to the DVD and to Amsterdam.
@dutchbaritone08 If you're right, exactly HOW do you account for the orchestral mistakes in the Hamburg DVD which match this video EXACTLY? Yes, Callas was sick during the concert, but she was in pretty good shape for this particular aria. And yes, I am a trained singer, and I trained with the late Frank Guarrera of the Metropolitan Opera. I'm just making up my mind by doing side by side comparisons. I'm not going to convince you, and you're not going going to convince me, so let's stop.
@dutchbaritone08 Firstl, I didn't see this video till today. I had nothing to do with it. I just came across it and read your idiotic comment, and then I proceeded to see if the poster had actually done as you alleged he or she had done. After listening to this and comparing it to the DVD and Amsterdam, I decided that you were incorrect. Second, whether or not Guarrera was good or bad, he had one great career which i doubt you ever will. Thirdly, this is pointless, so just stop.
@dutchbaritone08 No, I love Callas, and I was interested to see if someone had actually managed to superimpose a different soundtrack on this moving performance. I have watched the Hamburg concert at least a hundred times, and I know the orchestral mistakes , which are present here too. I think the "stronger" voice is because of different equalizer settings. I think it's more nuts to make allegations that can easily be disproved. Great chatting with you too.
@Shahrdad you've proven nothing, except that you can't let go of this ridiculous argument. i'm sure you've watched this concert at least a 100 times today! and learned nothing..... get a life, and as you would say....PLEASE STOP!
@dutchbaritone08 No, I watched the aria on dvd about three times today to compare with my Amsterdam CD and this video. And I just watched a few selections from your channel on YouTube, so I have a far better idea of where this stuff is coming from. Stopping this discussion and going back to your channel. Very fun.
I hate to add fuel to this fire, but this can't be the audio from the Amsterdam concert for 2 reasons: 1) She makes a mistake in Hamburg she doesn't make in the Amsterdam concert by coming in early for "che parta e scordi ormai" causing her to sing "che" longer @ 2:08 in this video 2) She doesn't sing "mio" in "ah! il pianto mio" at the very end of the aria @ 7:48, where she did sing the last "mio" in Amsterdam. There is a posting of the Amsterdam recording on youtube you can check against.

Not many has become that kind of legend as Callas, and for what. Because Callas had
everything. Love ,hate, sensibility, sharpness, and lyrics, sorrow and all what is neened for a great voice. She really sang from her heart.
