@AroundSun This is live recorded footage from the free space simulation game "Orbiter" version 2006p1, by Martin Schweiger. The latest version of this simulation game is version 2010, p1. Google "orbiter space flight simulator" for more information.
@fable2omg Thank you very much :). As a matter of fact I have been to the cape Canaveral launch facility. They didn't teach me how to fly it though ;). Eventually it all comes down to practice. (I will admit though that my studies in aerospace engineering help alot with the process). In the comments I refer to tutorials, maybe go through them. if you try hard enough, it will work :), but first you will have to fail a few times. I don't know anyone who made it on the first fly...
@fable2omg There is a major difference between FSX and orbiter. FSX is the 2006 well known FLIGHT simulator from Microsoft which costs about 50 euros. It has a basic spaceflight simulation environment, but its not true to life. Then you have Orbiter 2006. This is a FREE SPACEFLIGHT simulator, online available from many sites (just google it) and with many addons. The low-to-ground graphics aren't that good, but it has the best space flight enviroment. I suggest you give it a try...
@woutboeing Thanks, I've found The program to use the addons lol I though it was done with FSX. ITs almost the same. Just to be sure, you are using Orbiter Space flight simultor right?
If you are referring to the plume at 0:28, then it was unintentional. I did not modify the rendering/texture engine of Orbiter in any way. This was "programmed in". For second part of your question: the angular velocity shown in the video is the minimal one achievable within orbiter (a minuscule step-input at 0.1 time acceleration). If you speed this up to about 1000x time acceleration, that rotation becomes quite fast. This was more done for qualitative purposes...
im really surprised about the views this is the best video about the Apollo mission to the moon and back ive ever seen I've actually told people bout this video ,,its brill !!!!
My new favourite Orbiter movie, good cinematography and great choice of music. Knowing how hard this mission is, you made it look easy. I can never get the LEM capsule to get into a good orbit and dock with the CSM, I run out of propellant.
sry to ask again but how the hell do i controll the RCS thruststers? all i can do when i want a lunar liftoff is getting straigth up and falling down again -.-
you have to set the right contacts on. before you fire up the engine; make sure you checked if your rcs was working; that'll save you alot of trouble when taking off.
you have to set rcs thrusters on; along with the correct fuel tanks; and the master switch. i do not remember the exact commands themselves, but play around abit with in the cabin of the lm, it shouldnt be so hard to find them.
okay if you want to know how to get to descently fly in orbiter; well that takes practise... and lots of time
if you are referring to how to fly the nassp apollo; you should find the step by step tutorial i used on orbithangar (google this) ; its the first one that shows up if you type in 'apollo 11 tutorial' in the searchwindow; (it's a 30 page tutorial with screenshots)
how did you learn that? i just don't get it... how to launch the ascent stage and so... and how do you exactly know when you have to launch it so you can dock to the CM again??
- then wait untill the cm is almost at its closest point to you; you launch.
- your launch should be heading the inclination that the cm has. (your orbits should end up close to eachother) and also try to circularize your orbit at the minimum altitude of the cm.
- then use the dock-hud (using the right target) to dock.
but where did you learn the whole thing? i just downloaded it today... the whole thing is really confusing. do you know a good tutorial for the whole nassp?
I suck at apollo missions just when i think i've reached earth orbit, my rocket falls back down to earth. what is the height for earth orbit?, also this is my like 4rth or 6 time watching this, i just got a youtube account :D
the orbit of the apollo missions was about 100 miles above the earth surface; which would make it 156-160 km altitude in orbiter... and just keep trying; use your instruments. (especially the orbit and attitude mfd's)
I love Orbiter but I have some difficulties with Apollo missions since the documentation is in a few cases very poor. I had to make up a lot of things by myself :) By the way - very nice video
LOL I am doing that emazing travel but by the moment I am wating the TEI Man. Date to return to our planet. I hope that I´ill could make the splashdown on the pacifc like you :D (sorry for my possibles mistakes in my inglish I am from spain ^^)
Can anybody help me please? Why could I play it earlier and loved, but now I get this invisible shuttle glitch, stars but not blue sky.... it pisses me off! What's wrong? Please help!!!! :(
nope, this simulation is real; made with orbiter. i really simulated this... so the simulation is definitvely not a hoax ;)
if you're referring to the real moonlanding? as a student in aerospace engineering, im convinced that we did go to the moon; and if you have a problem with that, you can join the rest of the youtube-crazyguys that believe that it's all a hoax, im not gonna start that discussion here...
How did you get the rest of the panel? All I see on mine is the left side of the CM nothing more, I can just move slightyly up or down with the keys. How do you get to the other panels and LEM?
i downloaded AMSO off orbiter related site. so i assume that this is what your using. my question to you is during liftoff is it all auto guided and if it is not when do i have to take control.
Awesome vid, on my Apollo missions I never did the BBQ role, :-) hope I didn't toast the astronauts. Is it a requirement for safety or just to keep the temp steady.
its required to keep the sun from toasting one side of the spacecraft while the other side freezes to the harsh enviroment of space... but you kindof had that figured out yourself;)
for me they deploy automaticly after reentry, but check the cockpit if they dont, on the lower left part, you have a panel with the jettison options, one of them is the chutes.
That was the best video I`ve seen on youtube for a long time. Hey you know how and where did you get that apollo mission add-on what web site do you download it from. I`ve got orbiter but I want that add-on.
thanks for your great comment, i'd be glad to tell you where i got mine: i googled nassp and downloaded their latest (for the link, try looking in the comments here) . Although latest comments tell me that the apollo from AMSO is much better. i havnt tried that one yet, but youtube vids make it very promising... also go to orbithangar for the tutorial that i used (search comments for link).
it is i know, but you have to understand, at the time this movie was shot, i dont think there was no amso yet! and if there was, it wasnt known, because i googeld alot when i was looking for a apollo rocket, and nassp whas the only one that came up. so, if i would do it again, it woudl probably be with amso, but im not thinkin of that any time soon .
my video-editing skills improved alot since the time this was made, soon ill be uploading the Orbiter shuttle launch, you'll see;)
actually, the whole reentry is there. only the apollo's made 2 short reentrys instead of 1 long one, to keep the heatshield stable and in one piece. right after the first 'bounce' the apollo went up about 20 km in altitude, almost heading out of the atmosfhere; it was to reduce the stress on the cabin crew aswell!
Did you understand me correctly? I wondered why you performed a "skip reentry", a reentry made with one or more smaller reentries. According to Wikipedia and other sources, the Apollo only did single reentries, though it was capable of performing skip.
i went looking for myself, and although i didnt find the exact reentry plan for the apollo, i did find the following:
-When an Apollo CM encounters the earth's atmosphere (300,000 feet), the vehicle bounces or skips back above the atmosphere. From this point, the craft follows a ballistic trajectory until it reencounters the atmosph.. (astronautixdotcom)
yes, this was nassp, and i googled amso, and really that one looks way better (i dont know the inside of the launcher, but the exterior and launch pad look very cool, might try that one day (dont feel like redoing the whole movie though ;) youll just have to live with it ;) ) thanks for the tip!
ok, u guys may have noticed that i promise alot, but never actually do naything... its not because i am like that, but its justbecause im just having not enough days in a week, or hours in a day. if i could find an extra hour a day, id do it right away, but i really cant promise anything... sorry for any inconvenience
ye, type nassp in google, and normally it will guide you to a sourceforge website where you can download it, for the manual, go to orbithangar and type in search apollo 11 tutorial, its a great one that got me to the moon...
huh, im not really an expert, but itdhink it got filtered out in the oxigen filters, where the CO 2 was filterd out aswel, maybe they didnt get that dirty :)
As far as I know it was a bit of a pest really, the dust was so fine that it was extremely difficult to manage with. It also could have exploded if there was a loose circuit simply due to the huge surface area it had being dust. But as they only landed with the LM, the dust was mainly contained to that craft. Only trace amounts actually was taken with them back to earth, due to the TEI
yea im also thinkin about that, though the difficulty is that orbiter keeps crashing on those scenarios (must be my pc) but im definatly considdering it. right now, its busy times here in belgium. but as i have time who knows what comes up ;)
just to help out abit i have found this music and was listed under lord of the rings the twin towers also as reqiuem for a dream also as winter overture by clint mansell also lux aeterna. hope this helps and woutboeing how long for the next vid of orbiter 2006?
the original idea was to make a apollo-get-to-the-moon-movie, but as the movie grew, a change of plans was needed.that vid would be well over 40 mins; nobody would watch that. ill try to make small movies showing how to get to orbit, from orbit to moon and so on. but still, its gonna be lot of work; and since im at university now, i have lesstime, but im gonna try it! as we say in my language: wie niet waagt, niet wint (who dsnt try, doenst win) grts, woutboeing
noo, orbiter is totally diffrent from flight sim. while flight sim is mostly played real time, orbiter has really handy time eccelerations (because of the distances): (up to X100.000 /1day=1sec) for coming coasting, i used X1000, this took me about 300 sec, but i did coarse corrections, so coasting took me bout 600 seconds, one way. thats 10 mins, so very doable, and thats how u go to the moon in 10 mins ;) be advised, when going this, u have to have a good pc, otherwise orbiter might crash
Hi great video, Ican only get to the point of leaving earth orbit and end up heading anywhere but the moon. more practice needed. i am wondering though who is this music by i love it.
once again excellent, lol that music filled me wih suspnse i was like ok someones going to die lol, but they didnt cause of your expertise were say, nice vid, did it really take like 61 hours on the sim to travel back to earth
not only on the sim, but also in real life: almost 3 days of earth coast. the whole mission took place in 205 hours: -1.5 hour for making an earth orbit, then 3 hours of orbit, then 60 hours of coast, then a few orbits on the moon, intotal, about 65 hours they spent in lunar orbit and on the moon. thanks for your comment
God this music sucks. It is the worst repetitive over used hack piece of shit I have ever hear that wasn't coming out of the Black Eyed Peas.

Nice to see a video where someone is trying to explain the basics of how it was done. Two minor points though...
You showed the ascent module with a visable plume coming from the engine, was this intentional for the purposes of the video?
Also the barbecue roll you showed was really fast (as opposed to the half hour roll) was this also done for the purposes of the video?
TheSpiritof1969 1 year ago

Dear All,
I have some questions about sociology and psychology:
(3) Why do we love travelling to space?
(2) Why do we have a perception that space is closer related with America as well as Americans' culture and values?
(3) Why do we think that space exploration is benefitical to man kind despite the huge financial expense?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!! :)

how did you learn that? i just don't get it... how to launch the ascent stage and so... and how do you exactly know when you have to launch it so you can dock to the CM again??
Ululuro 2 years ago
it's hard; but here are a few steps:
- check the inclination of the cm
- check the minimum altitude of th cm.
- then wait untill the cm is almost at its closest point to you; you launch.
- your launch should be heading the inclination that the cm has. (your orbits should end up close to eachother) and also try to circularize your orbit at the minimum altitude of the cm.
- then use the dock-hud (using the right target) to dock.
but this takes lots of practise...
woutboeing 2 years ago
Sidenotes:
-it could be that you have to wait a few orbits of the cm before it gets close enough. anticipate this.
- just after liftoff; rotate your lm into the compas heading that you wish to fly. (the inclination) then tiltover; as soon as you can.
-while making your orbit circ. burn; correct if you see the orbit deviating from the target.
- if necessary, perfrom normal-track or antinormal-track burns to make the inclination exact; also use allign planes mfd to get the exact same orbit
woutboeing 2 years ago
cool thx...
but where did you learn the whole thing? i just downloaded it today... the whole thing is really confusing. do you know a good tutorial for the whole nassp?

Eddy589 4 years ago
You also couldn't help me could you? I'm looking for the apollo add-on for orbiter but I can't find it anywhere
TIREDNDBORED 4 years ago
search for NASSP and you'll find it ;) It's pretty hard though, it's full of checklists.
kos83 4 years ago
ye, type nassp in google, and normally it will guide you to a sourceforge website where you can download it, for the manual, go to orbithangar and type in search apollo 11 tutorial, its a great one that got me to the moon...

hi. you seem to know a lot about the apollo missions. maybe you could answer this for me ?
what happend to all the dust on their suits when they got back into lunar orbit? did it float around the ship?
UncleBlakie 4 years ago
huh, im not really an expert, but itdhink it got filtered out in the oxigen filters, where the CO 2 was filterd out aswel, maybe they didnt get that dirty :)
woutboeing 4 years ago
As far as I know it was a bit of a pest really, the dust was so fine that it was extremely difficult to manage with. It also could have exploded if there was a loose circuit simply due to the huge surface area it had being dust. But as they only landed with the LM, the dust was mainly contained to that craft. Only trace amounts actually was taken with them back to earth, due to the TEI
TIREDNDBORED 4 years ago
that sounds pretty logic to me there,
indeed since the lm was disposed and returned to the moon, they could leave the dusty spacesuits in that one...
woutboeing 4 years ago
They didn't actually, they ejected them from the LM beforehand to save weight on the ascent to lunar orbit.

this is awesome! Hey mabey you could try to simulate the future cev flight. Respond back if done.

yea im also thinkin about that, though the difficulty is that orbiter keeps crashing on those scenarios (must be my pc) but im definatly considdering it. right now, its busy times here in belgium. but as i have time who knows what comes up ;)

ranny528 4 years ago
hey, nice to hear that u are interested!
im not working on any movies right now, but if you have any suggestions whatsoever (eg a tutorial or so)
thx and ttyl
woutboeing 4 years ago
it's definetly got to be a tutorial and done so that we who are not so clever can follow and get to the moon and back in one piece. cheers ranny528

the original idea was to make a apollo-get-to-the-moon-movie, but as the movie grew, a change of plans was needed.that vid would be well over 40 mins; nobody would watch that. ill try to make small movies showing how to get to orbit, from orbit to moon and so on. but still, its gonna be lot of work; and since im at university now, i have lesstime, but im gonna try it! as we say in my language: wie niet waagt, niet wint (who dsnt try, doenst win) grts, woutboeing

so you had that thing running on your comp for 205 hours?
vercingetorix045 4 years ago
noo, orbiter is totally diffrent from flight sim. while flight sim is mostly played real time, orbiter has really handy time eccelerations (because of the distances): (up to X100.000 /1day=1sec) for coming coasting, i used X1000, this took me about 300 sec, but i did coarse corrections, so coasting took me bout 600 seconds, one way. thats 10 mins, so very doable, and thats how u go to the moon in 10 mins ;) be advised, when going this, u have to have a good pc, otherwise orbiter might crash
woutboeing 4 years ago
Hi great video, Ican only get to the point of leaving earth orbit and end up heading anywhere but the moon. more practice needed. i am wondering though who is this music by i love it.
ranny528 4 years ago
requiem for a dream, the lord of the rings: two towers version. i think. but im not sure
woutboeing 4 years ago
once again excellent, lol that music filled me wih suspnse i was like ok someones going to die lol, but they didnt cause of your expertise were say, nice vid, did it really take like 61 hours on the sim to travel back to earth
vercingetorix045 4 years ago
not only on the sim, but also in real life: almost 3 days of earth coast. the whole mission took place in 205 hours: -1.5 hour for making an earth orbit, then 3 hours of orbit, then 60 hours of coast, then a few orbits on the moon, intotal, about 65 hours they spent in lunar orbit and on the moon. thanks for your comment
