This was HUGE on the dance scene in London.Massive tune.THank you for takng me back to simple adolescence! Now my oldest is a teen ! Where did the years go...
I've always loved Steve Arrington's vocals from his time with Slave and this song came at the pennacle of his solo career. This song was his own personal testimony after giving his life to the Lord Jesus Christ and it stands as a testament to the joy of discovering GOD.
Rick Astley, Whenever you need somebody stole this bassline..Danceing In the Key of life ..how raw and so smooth is this? ..hope you got the royaltys Steve..its kinda magic this Man!
@tsp2235 Don't get me wrong. I got his records. You may have listened to his latest effort 'Goin' hard'? A gem. This one though 'Dancin' in the key of life' was sort of mainstream. That's all.
yes i agree a great record,if a bigger artist recorded this it would of been played a lot more, heard this at the carnival a couple of years ago and its on my recrd list.
Man! This song brings back some seriously fun old skool memories! I have this and 'Feel So Real' on mint condition in the 12inch dance single format. I was young, but remember where I first heard it ... K97/Memphis! Steve Arrington's unique voice truly stands out.
For a long time, i didn't connect Steve Arrington and this, his solo work, with he being the lead vocalist of the band Slave. You can hear a subtle difference in his approach to lead vocal between his solo work and his earlier work with Slave. It seems he evolved further in his solo work, and 'perfected' it to a flawless state. The final finished work (recording) is amazing. It has a lot to do with the placement on the lyric structure onto the music. The lyrics "fit" into the beat, like, Wow!
wooow!!! I was mad young when this song came out, but I still knew it was the dude that sang Watching You..I still jam to Watching you, Weak At the Knees and Just a Touch Of Love no lie
OMG, I just met Steve last week along with the Ladies of Skyy. I thought I died and went to heaven!!! tell your Mama that you on your way, father stand behind you ooonnnooo
to lovethemusic the song is about loving God and having the joy of the Lord in your heart and dancing out of joy and pleasure. Who says Christians can't dance? Crazy. Like I said b4 David danced to show his joy and praise to God. Listen to the lyrics you'll figure it out.
Steve was a good drummer who played all kinds of music before his SLAVE days.SHIELA E and others. Calypso carribean rythms like this nice song were hot and that FESTIVE sunshine island flavor was popular in the 82,83,84 . Weak at the KNEES was a Calypso bass groove...even Dennis Edward's "don't look any further " was a calypso bass groove and both of these artists got mad love in the U.K. charts and still do.
@hardcorehouse got ya But Steve Arrington even said his solo career hits were heavily influenced from his pre-SLAVE days when he was playing percussion with Sheila E.and her Brother. That's right they did all kinds like Calypso, reggae, ska, jazz, samba need I mention more. I play the bass and you think this is homecookin soul an funk and from that you cant know what funk is.This is dance pop and not Dayton,OHIO across the ol JIM CROW LINE funk that groomed STEVE.
@somerzeze Actually that would be spanish vibes, not the Carribean where i lived, unlike you. As far as bass playin, you have no clue as to what was used on this track buddy, so you're just tryin to be a know it all.
@hardcorehouse When your from Dayton,Ohio where I'm from you young fried bananas and beans eatin import Negro/or else you can correct a Born and Bred Black man Descendant from American Slaves who spilled blood to build that American city ya Hoe ass now reside on . Spanish pirate descendant go break dancin and leave ya might be ex military Daddy alone.
@somerzeze LOL Gibberish.from our ebonics specialist. Notice he avoided answering and hasn't a clue on what bass and drums were used on this NYC production. NYC baby.
the 808 has killed soul music for real. no real talent and creativity any more. soul music is just an big booty image singing to a recoreded sound of some one who is simply tapping on keys to mimic what was done in the pass.
This is in the top 50 greatest recordings/songs of all time, in the history of music. It is just total perfection. The beat, the background female vocals, the out-of-this-world bass, the keyboard work, the lead guitar, and the LEAD VOCAL performance is beyond belief. The whole thing is nothing short of a perfect happening.
@hitomusic At first I thought you were being a "bit" over the top. But the more I think about the way this song makes me feel and the memories it stirs, I think you may have a point.
SeanFHoward: Great music lasts the test of time doesn't it? It propels so many of us to write, say and think tantalizing things often not noticed or realized at the time the music first came out, but in retrospect, become illuminated in high relief.
@Pomaori Get over it hitomusic's genuine enthusiasm is welcome, here. Many of us would rather read that than all the psuedo sophisticated cynicism bein' posted. Wouldn't you?
I'll just add it's the up lifting lyrics that move of the human spirit that makes this song so great. Past, present and future generation will love this records the same.
@hitomusic yes yes yes yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssss, love steve,s vocal syle just a touch of love a lil bit, with just a touch of loooooooove
Thank you Mr. Arrington you help me realized what i should be thankful for this song was very inspirational and uplifting it gave me hope when i needed it. Who would of thought to put such a strong message in a tune that reached many in a non-traditional "gospel" approach???
clubhouse dc loved Steve Arrington!!! people would be dancing and singing!!! I remember the dj turned the music down and everyone was singing!!! DJ Mandrill was hell at the clubhouse!!!!!
God is a good God.Who says we can't dance and rejoice life. David dance and he had the heart of God. Dance with joy of the Lord in your heart it will set you free. It did me!
I use to listen to this song back in the day when I taught fitness. A lot of friends were dropping left and right from the aids crises. I would go to studio and dance myself into another world to block out the sadness. Just felt that if I could keep moving I would make it through. It worked for me and I'm still here to tell the story and dance! Thanks for posting!
This one is definately a throw back from 1985. It was a decent year for me and this track brings back memories of that summer when I was on holiday in Devon and met some new mates that I am still mates with now!
