Of course Hitchens considers Catholicism a branch of Christianity. It was the FIRST branch. The first Bible with New Testament came out of the Council of Nicea in Rome, under Emperor Constantine, who pandered to Christianity/Catholicism for political reasons, combining pagan holidays with Christianity to appeal to more Roman citizens.

The full (OT&NT) canon was available long before Nicea. Also the full agenda of Nicea is known: Selection of the Canon was not on it, and also not in the reports.

Also the (damaged) Muratorian fragment (175AD) confirms 23 of the 27 books, and recognizes other books as forgeries.

That's proof the canon was completed before Nicea.

At Nicea Constantine ordered Eusebius to make 50 Bible copies. But the Canon was already complete.
