Questions: First, what kind of guitar is Trey playing here? Also, I wonder if he and Bill Lee had the info from Clapton and McCartney as to how the original was recorded. As I remember I *think* Clapton was playing a strat at the time, but can't be sure.
i very much enjoy every facet of trey's masterful playing and those that claim its not real music have no appreciation for real music itself. great vid.
Trey is a master of the subtle as was Garcia, because most listeners are horrible at listening ( I give you American Idol ). I pretty much feel justified saying that anyone who actually is a critic of Trey really can take a big fuck off and excuse yourself from someone who actually has a discerning ear. Basically you have no ear for anything that isn't obvious or simple and are incapable of reading music past one sentence of the phrasing and are immune to tone.
I think it's quite the generalization that anyone in the world who takes a stance against a guitar player you happen to like is completely inept regarding anything musical....
I personally think Jerry is much better at jamming and commanding his band. And if you would listen to George Harrison and his band play this song, they play it much better than Trey, too. However, Trey is a very brilliant musician also.
I know but Trey from the standpoint of composing and implenting the songs he creates he in my opinion is more talented than Jerry Garcia ever was. Have you seen the Liog video of Trey and Dave Matthews??
Trey is the best quitarist in the world bar none. Better than Jerry Garcia ever was and better than anybody that I have ever liked. To anyone who knows music and how to play it knows that Mr. Anastasio is as brilliant as it gets regardless of what type of music the listener likes. I believe Trey shines even more when he is with other bands such DMB. They really ought to go on tour with each other.
...thank you squirrel...I have been waiting for someone to get my back on this one...zzzz...total agreement...Trey is worthwhile in Phish and Phish only...outside of that really safe environment, well, he is just a novelty for folks who are flashing back to better days.

zzzz....zzzz...wake me up when this predictable piece of boring crap pentatonic I can do it in my sleep when I teach it to 100 intermediate guitar students solo ends...zzzzz...is he done yet...z.zzzzz....the genius is in the original work of George Harrison, who is 1000 times more interesting, and important to the history of music than trey will ever be....zzzz...is he done yet....zzzz
I've never understood why people watch videos and then make disparaging remarks about thier abilities. As a guitar teacher or player you must recognize that Trey is a superior technical player when compared to George. Furthermore, how can you rip Trey for playing a solo that you insult, while at the same time you continue to teach "crap penatonic" scales to students? I hope your playing is better than your logic or I feel sorry for your students. Don't be jealous. George wouldn't approve.
i think this is comparable or better to claptons and the beatles versions. the tone is amazing and while Imo not sure if you can compare try, clapton and harrison this one is defiantly up there especially when the improvisational solo comes to an end when they both play the same note and beat
WTF! Good music is good music people. Let the BS go and enjoy each time you are able to see stuff like this in person, cause it don't happen everyday. I love them all seen every band under the sun you can name and it is a joy each time and a new experience each time I go. Peace!
With all this bitching whining all I could do is weep. I love hearing people comment on things based souly on personal preference and not true music knowledge. Will Lee (the bassest) has played with countless musical legends, and for anyone who thinks your "King Phish Almighty" Trey has more technical prowess as Jimmy Vivino needs see all the REAL cats he played with and never had to go PHISHING. And I for one would never hit the snooze button on Jackson Browne.
mr beef, who's to say I wasn't listening to Jackson's fine slide guitarist, David Lindley, who's soul was afire before the birth of said Trey, snoozeman, from phish-snoozeland-boringville...anyone critical of the songwriting talent of jackson browne need be ignored actually
pretty much standard b-llsh-t pentatonic post-clapton simplicity from my vantage point, on the part of both players! Let Jeff Beck solo on this and you might see something creative
right you are. although trey was admirable on this song, WMGGW does not lend itself to jamming/shredding (but what George Harrison song really does?). I don't think that even Jeff Beck could do much more with this song's "jamming constraints".
It's not the scale, it's how you play it. And Trey's masterful bends and overall tonality sound pretty good to me. Sometimes a flurry of notes a la stunt guitar doesn't fit the tune. Listen to a Phish version of this song, very powerful; mainly due to the way attacks this gem.
who mentioned anything about shredding...beck would do quite the opposite...he would hold a note, squeeze some soul out of much fewer notes than most anyone I could imagine...I am sorry Trey fans, he is boring as all s--t on this cut, standard stock bends and phrasing...snoooze...zzzzzz...wake me up when he is done...
Says the Jackson Browne fan!! Haha. your opinion is null and void my friend, especially when it comes to judging what is 'boring' when your tastes include listening to the single most tedious songwriter of the past 30 years, Jackson (snoooooooooze) Browne.
Doesn't get much better than that. Masterful guitar play with trey and jimmy. Thank you greatly for posting these jammy vids spotted stripers. Just reminds us the great impact Phish has been in the music industry altogether.
this makes me soo happy, the good lieutenant back on stage, ripping it, and he's sober. can't wait to see him this summer at the newport folk festival
well i guess after all those years of seeing trizney play he always just looked normal to me, you can really tell in this clip he is sober and god bless him for that.
