No one... and I do mean no one... besides Andy himself knew what the real joke was when he was on stage. His whole act was an inside joke that only he knew... was he trying to really be awkward and make people laugh at something that he himself knew wasn't funny... or was he really not that good? When he was serious on stage, was it because he was truly melancholy or was it more audience manipulation? We will never know... but one thing is for sure... the man was brilliant.
no one will ever come close to the comedic genius of andy...im 34,and i can just barely remember some of the antics he pulled off...thanks so much for posting
love his elvis, it was kind of the stick in the eye showing he really could perform "traditionally" as good as anyone else.
But his comedy was so far out of bounds and beyond anything it still remains untouched. Sascha Baron Cohen comes close (which is a compliment). But no one yet has ever matched Andy Kaufman.
You know Andy always hired actors. Do you think that one in the middle is a young Tracy Morgan? I kinda think so.

I think Lettermans demographic back in his early days was a much younger people than it is now. Their laughs alone crack me up. :D

I can't get that fuckin' version out of my mind... Is better than Elvis. Not even Elvis could rock like Elvis in the way Kaufman did it.
Beautiful children.

anyone can tell me the name of the elvis song?

I forgot how funny-crazy he was. TV comedy is so predictable and dull now we could use someone like him to emerge.

I think what got Kaufman to do his elvis was when Letterman said "Do it for the kids" :)

Folks who say Kaufman is not funny have no sense of humour or any kind of personality. I think that Sasha Cohen is a Kaufman wannabe.
Kaufman is the standard for comedy.
chicago618 3 years ago 2
I wouldn't say "standard", but certainly exceptional rule.

So, why bother visiting a Kaufman video? I mean, I'm just curious.... Just to say "he's not funny"? Please tell me you have more brains than that.

@hpufo The problem is not that he's unfunny, but that you expected him to be funny. And now you're disappointed and it's completey your fault.

@duncan36 Andy Kaufman's whole career was based on negativity. That's one of the reasons why he was so famous... Read up kid

Is this where they stole the plot for Me, Myself and Irene?

They didn't steal it, it was a tribute.

neoldd1 3 years ago
No no, I mean, did the makers of Me, Myself and Irene give credit to Kaufman ?
groovestix 3 years ago
Oh, sorry. I don't know, but I'm pretty sure they credited him; I heard someone talking about this on TV, but I don't remember exactly...

I really love hearing his playful, gentle voice.
He looks like a guy coming out from a fairy tale: maybe that's why I like him so much, he makes me dream...

According to his IMDb page, he was on Letterman eleven times, all in 1982 and 1983.
He did something totally off-the-wall every time.
