In addition to it just being wonderful, It's also a lesson to singers these days to NOT SING OUT CONSTANTLY.......her soft singing always carried to the last row, because at her best it was produced so wonderfully.......I remember seeing her in Norma and her pp singing was amazing
I remember watching this production of Il Trittico on Live from Lincoln Center at the time. It is not often these days that a single singer attempts the lead soprano roles from each of Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica, and Gianni Schicchi. She was so wonderful (and different) in each. It is one of my first opera memories.
non si può commentare perché non si sono parole: l'opera, con questo finale, è sublime, la scotto affronta quest'ultima parte di una difficoltà interpretativa terribile con un coraggio che lascia ammirati, 5 stars!!!
most of the producations i saw of this opera showed the maddona coming with angelica's sun but this is so realistic and powerfull and scotto do it amazingly !
I remember when I first saw this telecast, I became a complete sobbing mess. There are few singers who can move you like this. I don't care about the less than perfect high notes. Scotto was an incredible talent and her committed acting brings you to an emotional edge. The only other soprano who comes near this is Radvanovsky who I saw do this in LA. In that production, the Madonna and child actually appeared so that visual pushed the audience over the edge. Not a dry eye in the house.
I was first introuced to her performance of Angelica on record. Without the luxury of seeing her tremendous acting ability, I heard such amazingly refined artistry. She was absolutely influential in my approach to playing cello solos I would put her on my record player and try to imitate what she did with her voice on my instrument. Of course, it wasn't possible, but what an education she gave me. Someone should post her complete performance of this fabulous work and Diva.
this was a great night. I was there and experienced La Scotto in all 3 roles. Not only a tour de force, but an absolute masterclass in how to use voice and body together to make a complete role. It's not all about high notes! This was and still is one of the highlights of opera.
I'm in level 4 of the SFGC, and 18 of us are the children singing backstage! Our first show is on Tuesday, and I am SO excited! It really has been a great experience.
I have never heard of his opera until I saw this on PBS years ago as a kid, and Puccini and Scotto pretty much floored me. I hadn't seen this clip since then, and upon viewing again after all these years, Puccini and Scotto still floor me. When Angelica's mind (5:36) opens to the revelation, it is beyond art. It is almost some type of scripture.
I've seen nearly a dozen performances of this opera over the past 25 years and while most have been excellent, none have approached the level of Scotto. Even Stratas's emotionally charged account has to come in second place, behind Renata. She was just a force of nature. To this day, I've never heard applause so earth-shattering as when she took her bow.
Brava, Renata. What a change to see such commitment! She was certainly stretched to the limit and beyond, and some of flaps on high notes were worse than anything Callas uttered, but she none the less moved me. I'd rather that anytime than the careful, less than fully committed singing we get from most sopranos these days.
Renata Scotto's greatest assumption of a role. The tragic emotion is so strong that it almost becomes palpable. Such incredible acting and the intensity of her singing is unmatched. Brava!
We're going to see this in Orlando in April 2009... can't wait! Though Scotto's recording will always be my favorite, I've never seen it in person ...
i dreamt of this scene when i saw this clip. and everytime i see this, it's impossible to strain my tears! how moving.. "madonna a mother imploring you..." just,, just,, magnificient.. the deepest regards and adorences from Seoul Korea...
One can read the fear for death on her face... She must have died this dead so many time on stage.. and has my utmost admiration for the ENTIRE performance indeed.
This performance is beyond perfect in every respect. Scotto mastered this role to such an extent that you actually forget she's acting. Her singing is gorgeous, and the dramatic element is superb, especially at the very end when she gets down on her hands and knees to accept the infant into her arms. Even the bodily movement of her sudden collapse at the end is perfectly timed with the phrasing of the music. Scotto conveys a tenderness that leaves me speechless!
The version I saw originally, had the main character tear off her clothes when she realized she had committed a sin. A very biblical approach to seeking forgiveness, and the way it was done was absolutely moving. I wish it had been in this, but you're right, her performance was astounding.
This is such a powerful piece... I've never really sat down to watch an opera before this. What an amazing way to explore the internal struggle of the assurance of salvation matched with human suffering.
As far as performance and believability goes, the opera singer has the hardest of responsibilities in that she/he must promote a beautiful sound alongside a believable physical presence as the character. I find Renata Scotto, in this clip, superb in both aspects.
It's unmatched; we won't ever see any better from any singer- well it's doubtful. Any evidence of vocal decline is completely irrelevant. She does become Suor Angelica.
The complete scene can never be reproduced but , but when she begins to wimper ,when she in in her extacy ,when La Madona brings her son to her. I belive Scotto understood that. It could be concidered silent movie acting ,but when dies and slowly rolls her eyes . Ahhhhhh. Its those who suffer in silence all of there lives.
It sure is. Believe it or not, I saw her Butterfly at the Met I guess around '86 maybe. She just crushed it, even with all her vocal problems, she just managed to bring it together, and the acting!!
Watching that brought tears to my eyes. What's interesting is that she's not even the finest actress; but it's the utter profound committment of her performance. She is present and focused the entire time on the action and what's going on with Angelica. Every last moment of that scene she was committed to the intentions of that character. I don't know if there ever was or will be a finer Suor Angelica.
Vocal imperfections do not matter AT ALL in such an interpretation! On the contrary: Which human being would speak or sing flawlessly in an emotionally charged situation like this. Scotto understood. Her performance is brethtaking.
The voice is in tatters, the high notes long gone, the wobble was present big time, but you know what? It doesn't matter. This is one of the greatest Angelicas ever. Look into her eyes during the miracle scene and - well, there's nothing like it. Brava, Scotto!
She is definitely one of the best Suor Angelica ever! Bravo Scotto, we do miss you!!!!!!(unfortunately this kind of singing is gone... will we get singers like her again?)
This magnificent opera indeed has a very special feature. It simply makes an entire opera building bursting out in tears. And then you can split up the audiance in two parts : those who do cry and let it all go, and those who try to fight their tears by all means.
i have died and... died. she's a goddess, that's all. the artistry and overall powerful and moving performance we see here is nothing short of iconic.
sure, even a diehard scotto fan like myself cannot argue that the voice wasn't well past her prime here, but i can't help but feel privileged that this document exists at all. even this poorly lit, pre-digital age film cannot detract from her exquisite delivery.
One of my favorite Puccini's score,Scotto's voice is in tatters here but she makes up in her acting, this is one of the most moving endings of Suor Angelica I ever seen, thank you for posting this.
