Yes, it is true. Fugazi was coined "emo" back in the late 80's by music journalists. Ian, of course hated the moniker and wouldn't own it, but many other bands were inspied by their positive massages and continued with the movement (Into Another, Split Lip, Satchel, etc). How the self-loathing emo of today developed from this, I have no idea.

Fugazi is one of the most thought provoking bands out there. They aren't contained by a genera. They are most definitely not emo even if you think so i don't think it matters.
