  • I think it is amazing. The recording quality is poor - but there is something in Fuertwangler's 'diction' that transmits the power of Wagner. someone who knew his stuff, whatever else one may say about Fuertwangler. There are a lot more insipid recordings around, in whole or in part. My favourite: The Clemens Kraus

  • FIERCE,FIERY,FACED NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMP EVEN WHEN HE STILL PLAYED "MATHIS DER MAHLER" OF HINDEMITH TO PACKED BERLIN CROWDS,THIS MAKES ME STAND AND WEAVE,THE SPELL HE DOES CREATE,IT "ROCKS " PEOPLE,GET IT,YOU DON'T PROBABLY LIKE JAZZ,ROCK,OR MODERN CLASSICAL,AS DYLAN SAID SO ,SO LONG AGO,DON'T CRITISIZE WHAT YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND,YOUR OLD ROAD IS RAPIDLY AGING,PLEASE GET OUT OF THE NEW ONE IF YOU CAN'T LEND A HAND,FOR THE TIMES,THEY ARE A CHANGIN!!!!,SO BE IT

  • I think many people are unfairly criticising Fürtwangler here. To me the it is the balance of the recording that leaves a lot to be desired.

  • Grease is all about rekindling lost love and taking a stand against an uncaring world. Wagner could totally have written it.

It just would have had swordfights.

  • @Harashawful OH,YEAH,I SEE 150 YEARS FROM NOW,LIKE WAGNER'S MUSIC,GREASE WILL BE KNOWN AND LOVED,just kidding,it's junk

  • @alezander666 Grease came out more than 30 years ago. It's doing pretty OK at the whole being remembered thing so far.

  • i just listened to ride of the valkries with the apocalypse now video- I take it back , wagner ain't bad, for background music in a cool movie

  • Live, and fabulous.

  • Wagner would have loved Furtwangler! And he would have loved Frantz as well... only London is up there with him for the Rheingold Wotan.

  • @doodeloo you have enlightened us all, we'll now only listen to Grease and Zeppelin

  • @CzarDodon don't feed the Troll

  • @doodeloo oh do shut the fuck up

  • @doodeloo Oh, the humanity!

  • @doodeloo This isn't a musical....

  • @doodeloo ARE YOU INSANE?! GREASE!? AND LED ZEPPELIN IS A TRASHY ENGLISH BAND YOU ASSHOLE! You deserve to be killed by giant.

  • @doodeloo led zeppelin is not german idiot

  • @mightypeter1 ya I know, way to miss my point @@@hole .... what a bunch of fucking snobs. zeppelin rule and any one who would find pleasure in sitting thru this boring nazi shit can kiss my ass ...

  • @doodeloo Hey dumbass, Zeppelin is British.

  • @KrasseOdaVonBayern whole entire generations now, wouldn't know led zepplin from a racehorse, they are gone,i loved them,I DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM NOW,AND I STILL LISTEN TO WAGNER,WHY,QUALITY MY MAN,AND THE ENTITY OF ZEPPELIN AND THE "HEAVY METAL,PUNK,ECT" ARE PASSING FANCY,WAGNER'S STUFF IS ETERNAL,IT'S STILL VERY HOT A CENTURY LATER,NO ONE WILL CARE OR KNOW ZEPPELIN,OR GREASE A CENTURY FROM NOW,THEY'RE ALREADY PASSE,THE PAST AND DUMB TO THE NEW GENERATIONS

  • @doodeloo I'm sure Wagner would've loved Grease.

  • @doodeloo EVERYBODY HAS THEIR TASTES,AND LOVE OF MUSIC,I TOO LOVED ZEPPELIN,BUT GREASE,WHAT A PETTY "MUSICAL" INDEED,surely others,like "sound of music,carousel,ect",are more pure and powerfull,are you joking,EVER HEARD WAGNER PLAYED,OR HIS OPERA'S,"DER GOTTERDAMMERUNG"FINALE,OR CHECK OUT BIRGIT NILSON SINGING "TRISTAN UND ISOLDE",THE "LIEBESTOD,not any damn singer now,or decades,could even sing a line she does,THEY DON'T HAVE THE POWER,and 150yrs from now,zepplin,played,shit no

  • (Poor things, corseted with almost no room to breath.

And self-aware magic fire. Did his creative mind ever let him sleep?

  • Does anybody know if Furtwängler makes any cuts in this recording of the Ring?

  • @niallguinan There are cuts in the La Scala live recording. But as far as I know the Rai recording (this one) is complete. There is also a compete Die Walkure made for EMI in studio in 1954 with Frantz, Modl Suthaus and the young Rysanek which has no cuts and considerably better sound.

  • I stll fail to see where all these people see the greatness of Furtwängler's Wagner. it is a matter of taste all right - but the finale here is a sort of cacophony! It spoils a rather fine Wotan.

  • @Spiritakis Furtwangler was never great on technical perfection, his interpretations need to be viewed in their entirety, his sense of drama is perfect for most Wagner, his ability to create dark intense atmospheres is second to none, in a word he is epic. I appreciate that many people find his 'sloppiness' too much for their delicate stomachs, especially those who were weaned on 'perfect' studio recordings. Knappertsbusch had a similar approach.

  • @CzarDodon

I appreciate your wise and profound words. They really have opened my eyes for the greatness of Furtwängler's Wagner.

  • @Spiritakis not MANY KNOW,PAUL HINDEMITH WHO I LOVE,WAS BANNED,HATED BY NAZI PARTY,goebbles alone railed on him to 300,000 at berlin sportspalast, and radio to millions,""who is this hindemith",ect, his masterpiece symphony from opera "mathis der mahler" was banned,YET,FURTWANGLER PLAYED IT TO ADORING BERLINERS,RISKING JAIL,CONCENTRATION CAMP,TORTURE,AND WORSE,HE DID THIS ALONE,A TRUE HERO INDEED

  • Eintritt der Götter nach Walhalla

  • Astounding version!

  • Faltó el heda hedo de Donner. Creo que iba antes de esta parte. Excelente Gracias por recordarme esta parte de la obra

  • This is my favorite piece of music in all of the operatice repertoire!! Absolutely beautiful...Thank you for posting.

  • Hello everybody,

Danke

  • Czardodon thank you very much your comment on my position about Toscanini's Requiem and vocals, I started do not understand him after the NBC Aida it is an orchestral marvel and the end of voices, here you put this marvellous Furtwaengler of Rhein Gold, one of my friend defending Toscanini told me he is energetic but music has its own flow and Furtwaengler and many others make it better, with all of my respect, you are a music lover and a conoisseur we must know each other more thanks for this

  • Liszt was Hungarian you silly kid

  • Don't shout, it's very rude! I'll give you an example: Oscar Wilde was born in a part of the British Empire, he spoke and wrote in English, his family was of Dutch origin, but he was Irish, (it doesn't make him greater or lesser).

You have supremacy issues, what need do you have to decide who was the greatest, music is not a sport. Liszt certainly influened Wagner, and obviously Wanger admired him, indeed and it was mutual. Who is not influenced by someone else.

  • Liszt is a hungarian name or word the rest is tautology pls

  • I love you for this, there is a recording of Laszlo Margit on that LP is Pamina, and I think that Pamina is the best ever, she also made a Verdi Requiem and her Libera me (hungarian tv rec) is even better than Iren Szecsody, I can not imagine Toscanini and Schwarzkopf in Last four, sorry

  • Wagner copied no-ones style. If he had, then he woudnt be seen as the utter genius which he is. His style was utterly his own. With no equal.

  • @ronnie8141 It is impossible to not be influenced. Wagner's music and philosophy is that of the romantic movement, started by Beethoven's music. His style is definitely very unique though.

  • @ronnie8141 Liszt had a considerable influence on Wagner's compositional style,

    especially with regard to harmony.

  • @ronnie8141 WAGNER HAS THE QUOTE ""THE MODERN COMPOSER' LABELED TO HIM,RIGHTFULLY SO,HE DID STUFF SCHOENBERG,MODERNS DO,AND MADE GREAT MUSIC WORK,"MODERN",IN THAT IT FITS NOT DECADE,STYLE,OR COUNTRY,IT'S TRUE MAGIC THAT ENGULFED THE BAVARIAN KING,ALL OF GERMANY,AND HAD THE KING "SNUFFED OUT,KILLED",AS HE BANKRUPTED BAVARIA TO SPEND ON WAGNER,THANK GOD HE DID

  • lewars1912 you were right on! That was exactly the song I was looking for. Thank you.

  • shelbydawkins. Just noticed your comment. You're welcome.

  • does anyone know the name of the song or opera, it may have been written by Wagner, I don't know but it has a choral section that seems to build to a frantic finish... it's been used in lots of advertisements but i don't know the name...anyone have any idea which piece of music that i'm talking about?

  • I'm afraid you should give us a bit more to go on, mayby the name of an advert where the music is used, try the pilgrims chorus from Thannhäuser though I wouldn't call the end frantic

  • It may well be O Fortuna from Carl Orff's cantata Carmina Burana.

  • try requiem for a dream

  • Act 4 finale of Das Rheingold

  • @JAMVIDEOSS "O Fortuna' from Carmina Burana.

  • @JAMVIDEOSS Try Verdi - Requiem, Dies irae (Day of Wrath). It has been used quite extensively in the media.

  • this Loge is not that great ... I prefer Heinz Zednik

  • this loge is wolfgang windgassen

  • reminds me of the era when the grand

    zeppelins flew over

    Germany just before WWI

  • This made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. That means for me it is superb.

  • how wonderfull!!

  • The Loge's horrible. Wotan is good.

  • w furtwaengler

  • Italy.

  • Sono orgogliosa che il mio paese abbia dato a Furtwangler la possibilità di continuare a dirigere alla Scala e per la Rai.

  • Wonderful!! Ferdinand Frantz was a superb Wotan. What joy to listen to this.

  • Recording was invented to preserve performances such as this.

  • One of the greatest moments in musical history

  • understSaddened, I do not speak English! I recognize the final of the gold of the Rhine (of the Boxing ring) I am a fan of Wagner and its operas, it is moving to hear(and) him(it) by Furtwangler.
