Nope, In my opinion you don't get the point of the song written as it is. If you really think its a gentle song. Perhaps you should hear Whispering a prayer.

Stairway to Heaven is another good example.

The song grows as it progresses. That's a basic good songwriting technique. More so, I do not think it is a gentle song. I think you're missing the point of the purpose of For The Love of God and I think the solo is an important piece to achieve that.
