  • And they call Christians neanderthals,... I believe it's the other way around.

  • I think this is even more incredible when compared with the over versions available here on youtube... all superb, all different

  • Define Phil Keaggy: GUITAR GOD

  • Phil is just delightful in every way.

  • I am 56 I first saw phil in 1970 at the buhl park casino , I was 15 and there were all these people in there 20`s that invaded our teen dance and phil was not playing any top 40 tunes. most of the kids were mad they didnt dig him ? I went to record mart the next day and bought a glass harp album. I nolonger have that album I loned it out never got it back oh well I not got youtube

  • If only there were a higher-quality version of this video somewhere... :-)

  • That is just awesome. So talented. Thank you.

  • The thing about you Phil is that, just as your friend, Michael Card says, You make it look so easy. Thanks for your music.

  • wow hes nice....its amazing when you think someone cant do something till they act. then you sit there like 0,0

  • Tesla, one of most underestimated, he'll do the special effects

  • wow...i don't know whether to quit playing guitar or get inspired and push myself to get better! lol...

  • I was with him last night and asked him point blank about that Jimi thing and he said it never happened. End of story.

  • @MrDogmandont Well, me and phil went fishing last saturday at his place in tenn. and he said that you never asked him that, so whatever...

  • after watching this, i could say that christian music is just quite enough for me... that are some blessed fingers he got!

  • When God made Phil, He broke the mold...no one like him on the planet!

  • ESTE HNO. ES TREMENDO.........GRACIAS SEÑOR POR GENTE ASI PARA TU REINO.......EDUARDO

  • He could have just kept playin' the way he was with Glass Harp, but God had a plan, and Brother Phil responded to the calling of the Holy Spirit! Thank the Lord that his sister obeyed as well and led him to Christ! Too bad, Ted Nuggent! He went the way of the Lord and all of satans demons WAILED at their loss!!!

  • @vivian2gin No.

  • ive never seen anything like that before and i always check out lots of different guitarist how did i miss this one. crazy looping crazy guitar skills crazy singing. just amazing

  • Snice!!!

  • ONE MAN ARMY BAND

  • ONE MAN ARMY BAND

  • Pure savage...the dood only has four fingers on his right hand! Makes most of us look stupid, but is one of the greatest encouragers to musicians on the planet! Love his voice and totally envy his playing! AMAZING!!!

  • wow man ... awesome... just awesome... crazy

even if he's not christian i think i still admire his play

He had played with P.O.D and Jason Truby too...

    and he can sing....

i want to know how his brain works

  • 17 people who knows nothing about great art.

  • Phil Keaggy described in one word SMOKING

  • I read that Jimi said those things about Rory Gallagher... but Ted Nugent DID say "what happened to Phil Keaggy, he could have saved the world with his guitar."

Ted Nugent's response to Phil's becoming a Christian...

Funny because he is saving the world with his guitar!

  • I read that Jimi said those things about Rory Gallagher...

  • yeah, but you never know if jimi were in the audience somewhere and just didnt make his presence known. Usually rumors start with some sort of fact. Maybe that's what happened here, who knows?

  • amazing solo.. amazing voice.. amazing 4 fingers.. amazing dude :D

  • great guitar playing style... i really love it

    one man army!

  • great guitar playing style... i really love it

  • Its this type of creativity that sets Phil over the top.

And I love the sound from that dreadnaught.

  • sexy licks

  • Just saw him and my dad play live together then went to dinner with them and the band after. Great concert!

  • Jimi had it right... best guitarist of all time. rock on Phil.

  • @BringBackTheTruth Unfortunately that was an urban legend. But I have seen where Jimi held him in high regard.

  • @Earthfart actually, Jimi DID say that to a reporter once. The reporter asked him how it feels to be the best guitar player in the world to which Jimi replied, "I don't know, go ask Phil Keaggy."

  • @drmckillicuddy don't know how or when Jimi heard him, but it could have been at a bar somewhere or something.

  • @drmckillicuddy It was in the studio Phill was playing in that Jimi had ownership in.

  • @drmckillicuddy I dunno, I saw Phil himself say it was just a myth.

  • I think people keep telling that story about Hendrix because it some how gives validity to Keaggy since he's a Christian and not a secular artist. Let the urban legend go Phil truly is the best no matter what anyone said or didnt say

  • World class demonstration of incredible skills and creativity, Thanks redbaron863 for sharing, Cheers Billy ;)

  • Fantastic. Great playing. Thank you Tom for sharing it with me.

  • First listen. My goodness.

    Tom Loughlin Jr Utica NY

  • Wow,...first time I'm listening to Phil Keaggy since 1984ish!!

    I love it!

    Those were the days.

  • hahahahah!! ride on..

  • мастер! great!

  • l got into looping BECAUSE of Phil! I SO want his guitar! The guy doesn't even make them any longer, l heard. l own this song on the original album. l like him better as a soloist, tho.

  • I heard the quote about Phil being "the best in the world." It's more of an urban legend than anything else as the quote has supposedly been made by such guitar greats as Hendrix, Clapton and Van Halen. Said Keaggy, "it was impossible that Jimi could have heard me, we recorded our first album two weeks after his unfortunate death, so I just can’t imagine how he could’ve heard me. I think it’s just a rumor that someone’s kept alive…and that’s it for that!"

  • @Blink29 maybe jimi heard him play in a club somewhere

  • Awesome! I have been listening and watching Phil for over 40 years ('cause i grew up in his home-town and in those days he was always playing at Christian coffee-house somewhere in Akron) This is what a God-given talent can do!

    Bless you brother Phil!!!!!

  • this guy is a genious

  • @blhaataaa You, clearly are not. Learn how to spell genius. Dumb ass.

  • @Jack1C1Brown wooow i'm sorry! i did a mistake! woooooooow a letter that shouldn't be there! i'm sorry teacher, i won't do it again ok?

  • @blhaataaa I'm not a teacher, just a guy that's not retarded...

  • @Jack1C1Brown AHAHAHAH that's exactly what you are xD but fortunately, you are so stupid, that in the end you are nothing more than a joke bro xD grow up a little bit ;D

    cheers

  • @blhaataaa ...That seriously is the most unoffensive and shittest comeback, I have ever heard. I actually cannot believe I'm wasting my time replying to you. But it is good that you can play stop the difference between the two; 'Genius', and your pathetic attempt, Genious. The irony in that is just hilarious.

  • Comment removed

  • What can you say about this man - awesome, he just jams with himself, I don't think he really plans this stuff, he just goes with it, and what comes out is pure genius. Sweeeeeet! No one jams like this anymore!

  • i am not religious but i love this song because phil is the best guitarist in the world. hendrix was voted the best guitar player in the world. when they interviewed him he said that he was not the best. he named phil as his inspiration and that he would never be able to reach his level. i like hendrix and i agree with him.

  • @balisongkid1

    wikipedia :

"Keaggy has long insisted that such stories are completely unfounded, noting that "it was impossible that Jimi Hendrix could ever have heard me...We...recorded our first album at Electric Lady Studios two weeks after his unfortunate death, so I just can’t imagine how he could’ve heard me. I think it’s just a rumor that someone’s kept alive, and it must be titillating enough to keep an interest there...So I don’t think it was said…and that’s it for that!"

  • @balisongkid1 The rumor that I always heard was that Eddi VanHalen was the one who was interviewed and claimed that Phil Keaggy was the best in the world. Of course I have no way of know if this is true or not, but I'm guess it isnt.

BTW, for what it's worth, while Wikipedia may be correct on this particularly quote, generally speaking it is not a valid source for factual information.

    Peace

  • Just got turned on to phil. I studied jazz for years so i don't impress easily. This dude is amazing. Crazy use of looper(two loopers??) As far as hendrix being the best guitarist ever ; i dont think so. You don't have to dig very far into the bebop genre to find guys that can SMOKE jimi(no disrespect to him). e.g. Barney Kessel playing autumn leaves. Check out pat martino and john scofield doing sunny.Martin Tartin Taylor-I got Rythm and Tuck Andress I Wish. All including phil smoke jimi

  • AMMMMAAAAZING talent ... Thanks be to God!

  • I saw this guy live, it was the most amazing damn thing I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Phil Keaggy has been my favorite artist for a while now, some seven years, so you can imagine how psyched I was to see him live.

    Again, it was unbelievable.

  • I just realized something; I suck.

  • I saw him play this song 2 days ago. He didn't play it as part of his set and I was super bummed. Then he back out and played it for an encore, made my night.

  • @josiahgust up in seattle?

  • @theponchoman Yep. Were you there?

  • A Zep riff @ 6:40 - 7:04 . Phill Kills on guitar no doubt about it but somehow he doesn't often touch my soul. I hate comparing, but his Jazz scales and perfectionistic style just doesn't hit me like Hendrix or Santana and quite a few others. Technically he is brilliant. Just my humble opinion.

  • I wanna hear Phil on guitar, JS Bach on organ, and King David on harp jamming with the angels in heaven one day!

  • @miamidiver856 I will contend that Phil plays as David would have had he had a guit-fiddle instead of his harp. And he would have picked up a ten pound Les Paul, uh, Gibson, as soon as it and the amp was released. Furthermore, David would have plugged into a Leslie as soon as he could. Just saying. :o)

I heard Phil live for the first time in about '83. Missed the era of Glass Harp.

  • @miamidiver856

And Albert Einstein will be in the back producing theoretical time signatures for them to play in!

  • @rockston11 LOL, that's awesome!

  • @rockston11 every time I hear Phil play guitar, it feels like my ears just had really REALLY good sex!

  • @rockston11 Best. Comment. Ever.

  • @miamidiver856 - Who knows maybe after a lifetime of jamming for us folks, he might settle for something a little less taxing. :)

  • @miamidiver856 King David would have to learn our 12-note scale. :P

  • All I can say is Amen.

  • Thats what i call musically mature people! with a young voice

  • Phil has been repeatedly voted as one of the best guitarists in the world...right up there with Eric Clapton. I do not think it goes to his head at all.

  • 5: 35 and 5: 46 .......did that just happen? pretty sure my mind was just blown.

  • ill tell all you nutty professers one thing for sure !

phil keaggy sure plays a lot better than hendrix TODAY ! AMEN

  • Woo hoo!

  • amazing amazing. God has blessed this man ..

  • this guy is awesome!! this is an acoustic guiatr....I don't know if you caught what he is doing , but it is remarkable for doing it LIVE.....He (in real time)...sampled a DRUM beat, a bass line and rythm guitar ...in one "take" ...then did his solo over-top all that....SWEET

  • @intrigueinc

    And he sings!

  • Phil Keaggy: one man band.

  • 5:57-6:30 FTW

  • I just posted the same thing about Hendrix saying "Ask Phil Keaggy" about being the best guitar player. Happened in 1970 or so. That's some serious guitar homage being paid to Keaggy.

  • @BUGCORNANDZIMLOL I really doubt that ever happened. But an uncanny similar circumstance did happen when Eric Clapton was asked the same question, he said to ask Caleb Quaye, who was Elton John's guitar player for years. Caleb is now a christian.

  • 16 dislikes? Did they even listen?

  • A man. His guitar. His God. A humble performance. Just GREAT! I met him many years ago. He doesn't remember me but I remember him and the great music!

    Hey Phil.......keep it goin' buddy....................chuck..

  • Brilliant. nuff said

  • ...I thought playing with yourself was a sin... anyways, AWESOME SONG! LOVE IT! =)

  • He's tuning is during the fuckin song! Awesome stuff

  • @StuBear010 Dude! how about a little, "watch yer language" respect? Thanks.

  • @StuBear010 WORD USAGE FAIL!

  • jammmmmmin, hahaha i love it!

  • Obviously Phil has chops for days, but I think what makes him an even more amazing player is the use of dynamics in his playing. Cresendos through long licks etc...

  • I saw Phil play for the first time last night, and was blown away. What a fantastic guitar player, and musically creative genius! Fan for life!

  • Absolute best guitarist in the world..No I didn't say it first some guy named Jimi Hendrix did

  • @teamquickyn Never happened.

  • @CSLewisProfessor

My father saw an old interview. He was teling me about phil keaggy and he mentioned that hendrix was asked "Do you consider yourself the best guitarist in the world?" and he said "I don't know, ask Phil Keaggy." so i believe it did happen.. but that's just what i think. i'll make a research of age and time. It was possible and to me plausible.

  • @YTdiscusser I literally traveled a quarter of a million miles with Phil, and heard a version of this rumor in every single city we stopped in, every night.I've probably heard the rumor 500 times and never seen one tape or original magazine article. I always offered the folks who claimed to have a reliable source a copy of every single PK cd and t-shirt, signed and delivered. Gave out my card a hundred times. Never heard.

  • And before I knew the details (Hendrix died before the release of the first Glass Harp record, so woulda had to heard them live, and probably more than once. But there's never a rumor of that happening. On the other hand, the moment CSN were in the room, EVERYbody knew. Hendrix woulda been spotted), I repeated the rumor too.

  • @YTdiscusser

No aspersions on you or your dad. I just don't think it ever happened. Surely if there was an interview, thousands woulda seen it. But not an inch of tape. Be THRILLED for you to prove me mistaken--good luck! Kindly, Andrew

  • @YTdiscusser Phil Keaggey used to record in a smaller studio that Hendrix recorded in...Hendrix heard his stuff and made that comment to a reporter

  • @jacforjc Hendrix was dead when Keaggy recorded in the Electric Lady Studios. It's doubtful Jimi ever made that comment. Snopes it. That's not to take anything away from Phil, though. In my mind Phil, through the Lord, has made some of the most beautfiul music ever. He was really in the zone during "Beyond Nature" and "Way Back Home". "When Night Falls" is freakin' beautiful! To each his own but to me Phil will always be The Master's Musician!!!!

  • @CSLewisProfessor

well. i'm pretty convinced myself it did happen. I don't expect you to believe it. But i don't think my dad would make up such thing, there's no reason to make up such thing. It's not falsafiable i know but w/e. I was listening to a solo by jimi hendrix and my dad asked about it. It old him jimi was the best guitar player that ever excisted. And then he brought up the information. I wasn't sure of it until i found this video and then saw teamquickyn's comment.

  • This is my favorite song Mr. Keaggy!!! I am a guitarist myself and I have a few songs on utube that i have written... If you have time check them out! Tell me what you think!! I would love to here a profesional opinion on the music that God put on my heart!! Keep on truckn brotha!!! (Theif In The Night by Tony Canterbury)

  • what album is this song on? I never heard this one before!

  • @RudeAwakning "True Believer" from about 1995. One of the best selling Phil Keaggy albums I'm told!

  • @RudeAwakning True Believer from 1995 is the album this song comes from.

  • im one of the least religious people you will ever meet, and of course i love this guy! who cares what he believes and writes about? he also tears it up like almost nobody else. you dont have to be the same as someone to respect and enjoy their music

  • @siamesenightmare93 Don't gotta be religious to know Christ brotha. I hate religion and I love Christ.

  • Good job, Phil! Praise the Lord!

  • Regardless of your opinion on religion the man is still mind blowing.

  • Now THIS, my friends, is real music.

  • Hello, it's not about religion, it's about using the God given talent to voice your feelings and love/share with others!! All of his music is letting the world share his passion, just enjoy it, don't analyize it to death!

  • Does anybody know what chord the last one is? The one with the tremolo effect-thing. Please thank you bye.

  • @Troldegarn I guess that would be an Fm7 (add#6/no fifth), that is, an F, Bb, D, and Eb. That's what I hear, at least.

  • Gotta love the scream at 5:47!

  • i can't get over the religious nonsense spewed in the form of comments on here. yes they are all complimentary, but for real? get off your "religion cloud". his PLAYING has nothing to do with worship (maybe his direction) it has to do with practice. his music has NOTHING to do with martin luther king, it has to do with phil keaggy. music is NOT a tool used SOLELY for worship so don't make it sound as though it is. of course music is used as a tool for worship but not ALL of it is.

  • @porknbeans300z <<<lol wow...apparently you know little about Phil Keaggy, he would be your biggest opponent on this issue I assure you.

  • It's Grrrrrrreeeaaat! The first two minutes of his performance is a bit slow, but it's still great, though! "But", when you get to the first three minutes of it, then that's where it gets really going! The first four minutes and thirty seconds of it (including to the end of his performance), is his best performance for this one! If you want my opinion, that is. The performance that he did on JCTV was even better than the performance he did on this one!(based on sound quality, that is)No offense.

  • Amazing just amazing. He is one of my favorite guitarists. Not the best guitarist because I don't believe that title exists. For me it begins to sound like sports instead of music when we say best.

Phil does not strive to be the best instead he works at expressing himself as an artist. Phil once said that you could never be satisfied trying to be the best musician because there always going to be someone who does something better than you. He's most satisfied with composition

  • This is what guitarists' dreams are made of. That anyone can be that impossibly good blows my mind. Glory to God!

  • Phil plays guitars made by James Olsen - Olsen Guitars - completely hand made. Cost arund $10K. Phil gave one to Sir Paul McCartney for his birthday one year.

  • fucking talent

  • Thank You

  • i'd like to second that emotion. thaat was the most enlightening, rocking, inspiring, brilliant, awesome, greatest 8 minutes and 35 seconds of a moment. makes i feel even a little more higher, my body is buzzing.

  • Does anyone know what kind of guitar that is? I want to say it's a seagull but i cant make out whats on the headstock.

  • @dragon21a pretty sure it's an Olson.

  • its alsome guitar playing the best

  • Phil is PHENOMENAL!!!

  • Can somebody tell me what kind of looper is he using? Thanks!

  • I love that his pedals are bigger than him LOL

    Amazing.

A MIGHTY man of God, and THE best guitarist on the planet: We LOVE you Phil!

  • One of the best, ever...

  • Very few great guitar players can sing as beautiful as Phil. His vocals on songs like Under The Gracefrom Phil Keaggy and Father from the new Welcome Inn CD are just a couple of the many great vocals he's done over the years.

  • God breathed.....

  • Fantastic.

    I like his voice, too.

  • I love how he tunes the low e down and then does the guitar solo so you completely forget that he even did that and then he brings it back up at the end and your like wooooooaaaahhhh.

  • I saw Phil keagy in 1978 at Riverside Baptist church in Denver. I saw him a couple years later at the rainbow music Hall in Denver. The best guitar player I have ever heard. He is the best. I had the opportunity to have my children see him perform in August of 2007. Absolutly unreal.

  • King of the looper! Great

  • this is literally one of the best performances i've ever seen. the last chord just makes you realize, "this guys a genius" , and obviously the rest does too, so inventive, and a class player

  • I love this man. In 1984, the year of my change, I was given the album, (yes album, remember those!) "How The West Was One" (Recorded 1977). I was blown away. I never heard anything like his playing before, and I heard a many a guitar player, the best there ever was.

Years later I got it on CD, and still to this day it is top of the stack.

(Ps...What seems to be a mistake in the 4:30 area is a technical problem, that high note would not sound. I can tell.)

  • If im hearing the same thing your hearing, I think it is someone whistleing in the audience. IMO.

Either way Phil is one of the best players out there I had the oppritunity to see him a few years back and was blown away.

    -Danny

  • I have been a fan since 1972 and have heard him in concert several times. I did hear one of two mistakes in concert, but two mistakes over forty years is not too bad.

  • This is very very nice =) I love Phils looping!

  • That's what ' BEING ONE WITH YOUR INSTRUMENT' is all about !! Amazing.

  • @mooni007 my bad, it was to be + 1.

  • one the most under rated and talented guitarists. around. he does not get the credit he deserves. but he gives all the glory to god for his talent

  • This is really old. When was it recorded?

  • 10000000000000times inspiration information.Big brainy holds my heart in its hand its moving with the salvation army band.

  • Watching this, I've always been impressed with his timing. And his ability to retune his guitar mid-song. And his ability to make his guitar sound like 10 different instruments. And the clearness of his vocals. If you've ever seen him in concert, his rhythmic instrumentals practically lure you into a trance. And then he awakens you feeling refreshed. It's a wonderful experience.

  • wow religious nuts just don't quit. HE'S A GOOD (GREAT) MUSICIAN. if someone LISTENS to him it's about his music not his spirituality, and IF THEY DO listen to him completely out of spirituality then A: that's their own decision and B: they're stupid...... bill hicks: I love the Pope, I love seeing him in his Pope-Mobile, his three feet of bullet proof plexi-glass. That's faith in action folks! You know he's got God on his side.

  • Sure about that?

    watch?v=nV3bLZLpqTQ

  • wow.... ahh.. how do ya top that.... God Blessed him!

  • There will always be disputes over who's the 'greatest' guitarist. Those are really silly. One thing for sure though, if there was a contest to see which guitar player has the best talent to ego ration, Keaggy would win hands down. The guy has zero ego. Super humble and super talented.

I also love that he doesn't hide behind technology, or hide from it. He masters it just like he masters the guitar. Unbelievable.

  • Sure is a lot going on in this video! Guitar master Keaggy always did have a way of mastering gadgets. Great singer too. He reminds me of Paul McCartney.

    5:55 ... classic!

  • i normally don't like christian music AT ALL because most of its just spiritual bable. But this guy is REALLY good.

  • than your really not getting it, because what you are really liking is the spiritual babble, both the lyrics and his playing, grace by the spirit of GOD. But got is working in you.

  • No, I actually like this song because of it's dynamic musicianship, and the fact that, unlike most artists in this genre, he actually has talent. And as a matter of fact, the spiritual babble is the only thing I DON'T like about his music.

And please do not tell me what I do and do not like. I'm fairly certain I know what my own interests are. After all... they are mine...

  • Ditto that!

  • i tend to dislike that about christian music too. they're afraid to show skill and talent because they think it will take the focus off of God. and to me, i say go for it. God gave you your talent and he wants you to use it. that's my opinion

  • @matrixman609 I agree. Music is a tool to use for worship, music is not something we worship. Martin Luther knew this when he took drinking songs and turned them into hymns. I've been playing worship for over 30 yrs and I find it's better to just be in touch with God's Spirit rather than make a list of rules of what I should or shouldn't do. In Phil's case he's is expressing art and not leading worship.

I think If he was a violinist playing an aggressive classical piece he would be left alone.

  • @matrixman609 I cant agree more! God gave you that talent...USE IT!! that's that point!!!

  • @matrixman609 you ought to listen to alot more of it then because what I'm hearing is more musically sound than any other commercial secular music coming out these days. I think you'd be surprised if you actually tuned your radio to a contemporary christian station and listened for an entire day while you're driving, how entertaining and cool some of the music is that coming out these days. But yes, the praising of God is first and foremost what they want to get across.

  • @matrixman609 My entire church and I agree. God gave you the skill and talent, use it.

  • @matrixman609 I thought this was god.

  • @matrixman609 if you want a christian band that shows their talent check out Switchfoot. You might not like their style but those guys can play i tell you what!

  • @matrixman609 Have you ever listened to Lincoln Brewster? If not, you should check him out. He's a fantastic guitarist, and strong Christian.

  • @matrixman609 Are you seriously suggesting Phil Keaggy is afraid to show his skill?

  • @moneyquickeasy no! i was saying a lot of others do, but phil is one who does not!
