I was there! Just arrived walking over the hill and seeing the Waterboys playing below in the pyramid....it was timeless.....what a brotherlee/sisterlee atmosphere too!
10 tracks from this went out as a BBC Radio 1 In Concert show a few weeks after Glastonbury, I taped it and wore the cassette out, such an amazing show.
Some of the extended sections lyrics are from the poem The Four Ages of Man by WB Yeats
There's another extended version of Spirit from a BBC session a year earlier which incorporates Dylan's When the Ship Comes In and is equally amazing.
i saw this at glastonbury, its shit hot, bought a waterboys album, songs not quite the same, in 1987 at glastonbury festival you could buy what was called a bootleg copy, which was a C90 CASSETTE TAPE no writing and the tape inlay card was normal blue paper with photocopy writing on it, i bought it for a quid lent it out the same year, never saw it again, tried looking on ebay and anywhere else to no avail, but have it now, excellent 24 years later
I recorded this song on a cassette in 1989 or so. WXRT in Chicago was doing a St. Patrick's Day "Irish" music special. They also played songs by Thin Lizzy, Van Morrison, U2, and some bands I can't remember. The Waterboys were the best. I think I still have the tape somewhere. Thanks for putting the song on YouTube.
Waterboys, The Cure, Psychedelic Furs, Pauline Black and The Supernaturals. And me having out of body experiences - it was all a bit too much for an oversensitive young man struggling with their superego. Waterboys did 'Savage Earth Heart' too - knocked me sideways through dimensions. And the lasers. Oh goodness! Champion at the end of time sort of stuff
i was off my face on L.S.D at Glastonbury watching this, i never knew who they were or what to expect, it was awesome
