Because if you make robots with good balance, they can do dangerous jobs that we wouldn't want a human to do, like fix a space station or amuse an audience of cranky children with the unicycle.

That's a good point. I don't think they're trying to steal unicycling from humans (who are much better at it); this is more a demonstration of how well scientists have managed to make self-balancing robots.

We humans take balance for granted; just look at some of the small humanoid robots that try to walk, and you can see how hard it is for a robot not to fall over.

I suspect a robot balancing on just one wheel would be smaller, simpler and cheaper to build, and could work in narrower spaces.

Gyroscopes 'create' (using the term losely) an inertia that is unlike the way humans balance.

Seeing as this robot looks like its supposed to impersonate/replicate human balance, using gyroscopes is thus kinda cheating.

Also, if you have not gathered by now, I am not talking about using the gyroscopes to sense balance, but to physically balance.

Gyroscopes are only balanced because they have weight in the wheel. This robot stays upright only using the motors driving the legs so there are no gyroscopes and it's not cheating.

This innovation will allow for freestanding, perfectly balanced robots in the future.
