I installed a 500gb hd, ppc ubuntu, and it was great, and still is, no issues, got it running at 720, as i only use it as a server, usually headless, i had no problems with youtube, and as others said, emulaters work great, if they could use the full potential of the hardware, then it would have been perfect, but even if not, then its the cheapest server computer you can get.

I had no idea that one would install Linux on ANYTHING to play games. Anyone ever hear that before? "Linux is a great gaming platform!" Nope. I've never heard it, and I've definitely never heard of anyone wanting to use PS3 hardware to play a ten year-old PC game. Personally, I think Yellowdog makes a nice little home PC... obviously nothing special but it will do in a pinch. But it also didn't take me four hours to access my internet connection with Yellowdog.
djwheat is epic fail, at first he tried to run quake3 binaries for i386(PS 3 is not i386, it's cell architecture), wine is used to run i386 windoze binaries which obviously doesn't work on cell processors and finally adobe's flash doesn't support cell architecture at all.
I checked other videos of this guy and believe me, this guy is not an idiot. He just prolly went thru this linux like how every other guy would without the proper knowledge about linux. Pretty unthruthful video. I have basically no knowledge of linux but before I had my PS3 refurbed I got it up and runing no problem, resolution was perfect and I got windows running easily.
I think there's a couple different linux u can install and a couple differant ways to do it. They probably just did the wrong one.
I have no programming experience and very little time with Linux on the PC yet I found installing and setting up YellowDog on my PS3 easy and fast. It only took me 1 1/2 hours to install, and setting up the internet connection was quite simple, the quality on my HD was great, and this guy is "retarded", if he meant for this video to be serious.
I don't know about this guy, I installed the XUbuntu distro on my ps3 and it runs great...haven't tried Wine on it yet though. Maybe the Yellow-Dog Distro of Linux has some kinks to work out?
This vid really doesn't tell the whole story to Linux on PS3. It can be done, and it does display beautifully on HD. It really doesn't take a genius to get Youtube working on your browser either...

He claims that he can't run Quake 3 in OpenGL but had to use software rendering, it's not Linux's fault. Sony has a hypervisor on the RSX (PS3 3D chip) so Linux has no access to the 3D which means no hardware 3D games.
He complained that Wine doesn't run, well, Wine only runs on X86 computers, PS3 uses the Cell processor which is a PPC chip.
This guy is used to an X86 computer but the PS3 has a PPC processor, they are 2 different processors.

I do so as my home workstation and I do so because compiling x86 software (X-compile environment) on my PS3 is 16times faster than on my Compaq notebook.
Linux does not suck on ps3. Yellow Dog Linux sucks on the ps3. I had the same difficulties with YDL as he described in the video. Then I talked about it with a friend who has been using Linux for a lot longer than me, (and most people who buy a ps3 and decide to try there hand at Linux.) He suggested Ubuntu instead. In 2 days of using Ubuntu, I'm already farther then I was able to get with YDL in 2 weeks.
I think the reason Wine doesn't work is because it requires an x86 processor. Wine does not emulate the entire system, including the CPU, just the Windows DLL's and environment. I think the reason Youtube doesn't work is because Adobe's Flash Player is not open source and so cannot be recompiled for a platform that Adobe doesn't support. According to the YDL Wikipedia entry, you can use Gnash instead.
Someone tell me if I'm wrong, I've never used YDLinux.
This video is a total LIE! i downloaded Linux yellow dog 6.1, and it works GREAT! even internet works great. u jus hafta go to the aplications and internet menu etc to run internet wirlessly. its not slow either..
I thought Linux would be better on a PC or Mac than a Games Console. As I dont own a PS3 I never knew linux can be ran on a PS3. Plus PS3 I think is another Architecture to a X86, so X86 programs probley wont run unless using an Emulator.
OS's on the Ps3 use a form of emulation to run and are limited to the of the ps3's video RAM they can use. Where as YDL 6.1 uses somthing called Temporary File Storage or (Swap) whick lets It use alot more....
I said we are we installing (Unix Os's) runs on a form of emulation...thats why it only uses a restricted amount of the PS3's Power....thats why you can not run Xp or vista or any other windows for that matter because they require a minimum amount of memory or CPU power...
Actually XP doesnt seem to require anything. When I still had my ancient Windows 95 bought somewhere in the late 90's, I installed Windows Xp Pro couples years ago. Of course, certainly Vista requires some requirements. But you can still install it onto a Windows XP (by downloading it obviously).
by the way linux on ps3 is ppc structure not x86 which is why sony allowed it because they know hteres hardly any supported software to run on ppc linux.
ps3 supports opengl its that rsx is locked out and since the graphics card uses opengl it doesnt work. but software mode uses the 9 cores and cpu so it still looks great but i no wut you mean it is still fuck
linux is alright i guess but i would have been nicer if i had the wireless working but that was no big deal for me because my router sits like 4 feet away from ps3 but i did and still do have problems getting the sound to work so if anyone knows anything on the howto's please contact me

i install ubuntu on my ps3 and i can't watch videos on youtube like he said it is really dificult to install anything on this os, to dinstall somthing simple like a vlc media player u have too go trough tons of steps, hopefully one day things will be simple to install on this linux os and then they will be very popular
YD Linux is so unstable and feels almost incomplete, even for a open source operating system! Iv stuck a build of Ubuntu on my PS3 and have had no problems emulators or other software whatsoever.

Installing Linux on the PS3 was the first time I've ever used Linux. It was pretty easy for me to get a whole bunch of cool shit working. It's called a "google search". Try it sometime.

You cant run wine, the windows dll's are still compiled for PC (wine is not an emulator, bochs is). You can't play flash, Adobe will not make a flash plugin for ps3/linux, the ones for firefox are compiled for PC. It cant support OpenGL, Sony has deliberately locked out the graphics chip in Linux-mode. The problem is not Linux itself. Linux and Unix systems are fantastic operating systems, I hate when people refuse to understand that. However ScummVM works perfect under ps3/linux.

Why would one install Linux with the intent of playing games? While it is true that there are SOME games for linux, the majority of them suck. I have used Linux for the past 3 years for everything EXCEPT gaming.. that's what the 360 (or PS3 in your case) is for. Because you do not have the competence to configure network interfaces or install a freaking flash plugin does not mean Linux sucks.. It means you suck,as there are plenty of people who have managed to get everything working.

linux is still a young OS. the ps3 is good for gaming (ps3 games) and blueray. bot nok OS heavy tasks. it lacks memory, has the hypervisor and that just fucks it up. no 3d acc. not all spu are useable. i think its more a prove of concept. use a normal pc (mac or pc) for your pc. and a gameconsole for playing games...

A draw back is that Sony's back door(Linux), only allows you access to 1 SPU. I'm sure other corporation deals are reasonable.

I've been using YDL on my PS3 for almost a years and it's great for playing the old games via emulation.
It's not great for playing 3D games because of the limitations put in by Sony.

Of course OpenGL runs on the PS3, it USES OpenGL to run games! It doesn't use DirectX! It specifically uses openGL!

Linux does not suck on ps3. Yellow Dog Linux sucks on the ps3. I had the same difficulties with YDL as he described in the video. Then I talked about it with a friend who has been using Linux for a lot longer than me, (and most people who buy a ps3 and decide to try there hand at Linux.) He suggested Ubuntu instead. In 2 days of using Ubuntu, I'm already farther then I was able to get with YDL in 2 weeks.

I think the reason Wine doesn't work is because it requires an x86 processor. Wine does not emulate the entire system, including the CPU, just the Windows DLL's and environment. I think the reason Youtube doesn't work is because Adobe's Flash Player is not open source and so cannot be recompiled for a platform that Adobe doesn't support. According to the YDL Wikipedia entry, you can use Gnash instead.
Someone tell me if I'm wrong, I've never used YDLinux.

This video is a total LIE! i downloaded Linux yellow dog 6.1, and it works GREAT! even internet works great. u jus hafta go to the aplications and internet menu etc to run internet wirlessly. its not slow either..

I thought Linux would be better on a PC or Mac than a Games Console. As I dont own a PS3 I never knew linux can be ran on a PS3. Plus PS3 I think is another Architecture to a X86, so X86 programs probley wont run unless using an Emulator.

You obviously dont have YDL 6.1 installed, Because its completly different...
Its uses more of of the ps3's RAM so it runs loads better and looks great in HD res(720p/1080i,NOT 1080P!!!)

Actually it is right...
OS's on the Ps3 use a form of emulation to run and are limited to the of the ps3's video RAM they can use. Where as YDL 6.1 uses somthing called Temporary File Storage or (Swap) whick lets It use alot more....

I said we are we installing (Unix Os's) runs on a form of emulation...thats why it only uses a restricted amount of the PS3's Power....thats why you can not run Xp or vista or any other windows for that matter because they require a minimum amount of memory or CPU power...

Actually XP doesnt seem to require anything. When I still had my ancient Windows 95 bought somewhere in the late 90's, I installed Windows Xp Pro couples years ago. Of course, certainly Vista requires some requirements. But you can still install it onto a Windows XP (by downloading it obviously).

ps3 supports opengl its that rsx is locked out and since the graphics card uses opengl it doesnt work. but software mode uses the 9 cores and cpu so it still looks great but i no wut you mean it is still fuck

this video is a total fail. in the last 24 hours i've installed ydl 6.1 on my ps3 and i can now watch youtube videos and am now playing super nintendo games full screen using my wireless ds3 controller. it took a little research and work but it was well worth it. this video is a huge lie.

Wrong. There's a reason why the XMB has an option that states "Install Other OS" and why there is an OFFICIAL Linux OS called Yellow Dog for the PS3. It's not like it voids your warranty. This idiot just doesn't know how to use it.

i install ubuntu on my ps3 and i can't watch videos on youtube like he said it is really dificult to install anything on this os, to dinstall somthing simple like a vlc media player u have too go trough tons of steps, hopefully one day things will be simple to install on this linux os and then they will be very popular

YD Linux is so unstable and feels almost incomplete, even for a open source operating system! Iv stuck a build of Ubuntu on my PS3 and have had no problems emulators or other software whatsoever.

Installing Linux on the PS3 was the first time I've ever used Linux. It was pretty easy for me to get a whole bunch of cool shit working. It's called a "google search". Try it sometime.

the hypervisor doesn't allow RSX access. and 1080 I looks great on the new distros.. you shouldn't have posted this video for the simple fact that linux distro's are always being upgraded. its a constant evolution in hardware manipulation that cannot be tamed. this video is making you look like a complete moron. 1st of all, getting linux online takes 5 minutes.. your not a rocket scientist your a reatard. second. if linux isnt your cup-o-tea then stay away from it.

1080p/i, 720p also worked and showed perfectly fine for me.
Of course 480p looks terrible. It actually says in the manual that the distro was ONLY meant for High Definition.
And there are literally thousands of games that you can run on linux on the PS3.

You cant run wine, the windows dll's are still compiled for PC (wine is not an emulator, bochs is). You can't play flash, Adobe will not make a flash plugin for ps3/linux, the ones for firefox are compiled for PC. It cant support OpenGL, Sony has deliberately locked out the graphics chip in Linux-mode. The problem is not Linux itself. Linux and Unix systems are fantastic operating systems, I hate when people refuse to understand that. However ScummVM works perfect under ps3/linux.

Why would one install Linux with the intent of playing games? While it is true that there are SOME games for linux, the majority of them suck. I have used Linux for the past 3 years for everything EXCEPT gaming.. that's what the 360 (or PS3 in your case) is for. Because you do not have the competence to configure network interfaces or install a freaking flash plugin does not mean Linux sucks.. It means you suck,as there are plenty of people who have managed to get everything working.

At least you can use office apps, browsers, send emails, program c, java, python, use google earth, of course you can watch youtube and play online flash games, you can also watch online java players, just requires a little piece of brain, cause isn't just plug&play.
I have linux here (ps3) and i have fluxbox, so the thing boots very very fast and i can do everything except extreme processor/gpu things, memory is ok.

haha linux sucks.. Not.. remember that also the mac runs linux (unix) darwin. native. linux works. but it´s made for many different setups. not just one hardware setup like mac.
linux is still a young OS. the ps3 is good for gaming (ps3 games) and blueray. bot nok OS heavy tasks. it lacks memory, has the hypervisor and that just fucks it up. no 3d acc. not all spu are useable. i think its more a prove of concept. use a normal pc (mac or pc) for your pc. and a gameconsole for playing games...

I'm a Linux nooby and had no problem installing, running, playing games or any other issue this idiot has "reported" as problematic or non-functional. I've got snes9x, an nes emu, and my wifi internet con. figured out and running beautifully in 1080p. Just because he can't, doesn't mean it can't be done by an ape! A draw back is that Sony's back door(Linux), only allows you access to 1 SPU. I'm sure other corporation deals are reasonable.
