@zhudson Wikipedia says, "octopuses is the most common form in both the US and the UK; octopodes is rare, and octopi is often objectionable." (i've always called them octopodes)
I probably wouldn't have bought a Prius anyway, but forcing me to sit through this commercial before 4 consecutive videos has absolutely solidified my resolve. I will never, ever, ever buy a Prius. Now please stop harassing me!
@Dollozze YouTube. I'm not sure how you failed to notice, but there are a hell of a lot of commercials on this site. This one specifically came up on 4 consecutive videos before I posted that comment, but I've probably been made to sit through it 50 times in all.
The plural of octopus--contrary to popular belief--isn't octopi. The "-us" to "-i" suffix is only valid with Latin words. Octopus is from Greek, so it's either the Greek plural, octopodes, or simply octopuses in English.
Congratulations the 'joke' isn't on you. Every guy I talk to agrees the prius is ugly but girls (and some guys) seem to like the way they look. To each their own I suppose...
@TheNoisePolluter it's really not a big deal to watch a 30 second ad is it? if you watch t.v. you see thousands of 30 second ads and no one complains about that.
@kaasmopjah To me, it's almost like watching a kindergarten/child development TV show, but its for adults or something. "Look, mommy! I'm learning about plurals!"
@IanEduardoMeneses indeed. Prihi or something. But it looks like they made it a fair vote. That's worth something. And people will talk about it. Like we do know
@iluvsesshomaru09 Hi Latin student: You're a student, you're supposed to think for yourself, and outside known boundaries. Yes, it means first, but now it is a car, so it should be possible to talk about it. Besides, if one becomes first in one category, and another becomes first in a second category, you could have more than one first, couldn't you? Firsts.
@sjaak228 actually, prius has an adjective ending, so since the gender is neuter and since it is modifying the car type, then the comparative nominative plural neuter form "priora" is the correct ending.
Doesn't matter what you call it, its still a gay car meant for hypermilers and eco-nuts who inhibit traffic, society, or politics...or all three. Aside from getting great milage and being a "green-statement" or a status symbol for the driver, the Prius appeals at absolutely no level at all.
It appears as though all this "plural of prius" commotion is due to Toyota having manufactured a 4 door version. Thats the key to figuring out the "plural of prius". Aside from the key now opening 4 doors, it also means that the girl in the Prius commercial now has enough space to have 2 boyfriends
You bunch of retards couldn't figure that one out? It was easy... you simply have to imagine yourself in a Prius & put your mind to thinking of where you'd park? In the gutter... where else?
Share/tweet this video from Shweet.com and you're entered into a draw for a nice little moleskin notebook. Other sick prizes there too - like a 32" LCD HDTV :)
@RegisteringIsTorture ur wrong too, check your facts, got to merriam webster, it is a greek word so its not octupi(latin), nor octupuses (english myth) but octopodes (greek) (ohct-top-oh-deez)
It seems that Toyota needs to recall this commercial. They claim the plural of octopus is octopi, but they are wrong. The only acceptable plural in English is either octopus or octopuses. Octopi derives from the mistaken notion that octopus is Latin, which it is not. It is Greek.

The commerical is good. THe idea, not so much. You already have small cars, yaris, scion xd, etc, that you could put a hybrid powerplant into. WHy introduce MORE cars?In case you forgot, you have scions, yaris, corolla, matrix, IQ if you ever put it on the road. How bout making a hybrid sports car, like you've teased for a while, whith the volta or the Supra replacement? You've driven me to Mazda. Not that I'm complaining. I love my RX-8, and my dad loves his MX-5. So thanks.
I dont see whats the idea behind he ad. It is entertaining but what does it say about it? that theres gotta be more prius and that the brand invites the consumer to name the plural of it?? but what does it has to do with the car, what makes this ad unique??
@adrianoaguilar They are adding different types of prius. They are introducing the idea of multiple prius cars all using prius as the name. Kinda dumb, if you ask me. They didn't call the camry hybrid the pruis camry, or the highlander hybrid the pruis highlander. Basically, they are trying to say all of their new hybrids will be part of the prius family, so what do you call it when there's a couple of different prius in the lot? It's a soft sell.
@cgregoirebtw technically, the different types of Prius-ses/ii/ums(I don't know!) are named differently with one or more words. Check the Prius Family website to know the different names and specs. And another thing, this ad is to ask you what is the plural for 'Prius', Vote at the website ;). My thought: Cars does have a plural form; RAV4s, Scions, RX-7s, Miatas(MX-5) etc. But I don't know the plural form for Prius. But FYI, the MX-5 is also the Eunos, which I don't know the plural form either.
According to the Miriam Webster Dictionary, the official plural for octopus is actually 'octopodes', because the original word is Greek, not Latin (where 'us' does turn to 'i'). This would also mean that the plural for hippopotamus would be 'hippopotomodes' - a word that I personally think is fantastic.
i think something louder...im a cyclist, and have been hit twice by priuses...they should take a coffee can, put a tumbeler inside, and fill it with scrap metal, and spin it. problem solved!
Octopus and Platypus are of Greek origin, not Latin. They are not 2nd declension words, so -us should not become -i. (Also, the way they pronounced the -i ending is the way -ae is pronounced, and is strictly a feminine plural.) The Greek pous is 3rd declension so the proper plurals of Octopus and Platypus are Octopodes and Platypodes.
What Latin Professor said Prium? Prius is pretty clearly second declension masculine singular, so Prium is the neuter singular and the masculine plural is Prii
this song is stuck my head come on , it is quite funny though , there is a massive PR thing in cartown now on facebook with free avatar tshirts for that app and also there is a money tree aswell to grow once you buy a prius.
