Dan Auerbach is head and shoulders a better songwriter, more original, and the general content of his solo album and everything The Black Keys have put out there is more soulful, heartfelt, and generally better and more entertaining than anything John Mayer has ever done. That being said, Dan Auerbach, technically speaking, cannot hang with John Mayer in guitar playing ability. His music sucks, but hes a guitar phenom.

I think you're right. It's not that Dan probably aspires for John Mayer's success musical ability, I think he probably just understands not everyone has the skills to be such a talented musician in his or her own right, so Dan tries hard to emulate John Mayer's style. No one should fault him for that. In fact, Dan should be applauded for studying the musical greats of our era and consistently trying to up his game. But I don't think Dan should be trying to cover John Mayer so blatantly.

Yea, that's what I thought at first as well. I was expecting some real gritty blues. My favorite Keys album is the Big Come Up and feel like I haven't gotten the same feel anytime after. I don't know though Keep it Hid has grown on me tremendously and I have to say I think it is a perfect solo album cause it's not the Keys, yet its still got that Keys feel, but equally good, but different. I can't explain it, it just makes me feel really nice like.
