Many musicians have started out indie before moving onto the bigger leagues. Furthermore, many prefer obscurity over mainstream. The number of people who have heard of a musician does not define how great he/she is. Mainstream also has a stigma that it dilutes the true creativity of an artist with money, so that's experimental for you.
