What a NIKON beast!! i have one and i love it :P Great for time-lapse photography. i just need to trigger it for time-lapse with this little remote TEMPUS. works with MEX 5, 5N and 7. website at: tempus.bymac.org
Sorry, the Sony SLT Apha 77 is fastest at 12 f/s, they both have 24 mega pixel, Sony is 1/5 of the cost....Sony has OLED view finder, Nikon still finding its way......Move over Nikon.
And if Carl Zeiss lens is used with the Sony, you can say adios to the Nikon.
Bottom line, Nilon D3X is not worth 10K. I would not even pay 3K for this much-hyped brick.
Hello, I just bought a D3100 and had a couple of Q pls;
Does the does the AF Fisheye-Nikkor 16mm f/2.8D fit on the D3100 directly....
I also create panoramas, and always heard about a full frame fisheye lens, also heard about fullframe cameras, can someone guide me as to what is the difference here, and if/how are they used together? What Nikon camera offers the Full Frame Option? And what lens goes well with it, and can any combination really produce a 180 degree vertical coverage?
@coolvman99 i presume our distance from what is considered semi professional and expert is small these days. d7000 is all everyone want. go to... freedslr . co m remove spaces and get a way to bring home a new Nikon D7000
"embrassing... that's basically it?" ----- What do you mean "it?" the image quality and specs are to die for. I would take this camera over most "lower end" medium format digital cameras.
The D3X which I do have is no more a better of photographic tools as Nikon low quality lenses, so this camera of D3X just add aother bad quality piece of equipment to Nikon Products.
Yes that's how they're done but they're not regulated by iso so they can't be named ISOxxxxxx. Any ISO regulated standards have an ISO name on them. Does that make sense? Hence they aren't true ISO.
great review -a camera for the pros with the strobies and for everyone else the D3S is the sensible mans pick.....im now off down my local camera store donned with a baraclava to get myself a couple!! :D
This is indeed a SUPER CAMERA. Sadly it is out of my price range.
For a budget camera my D60 still takes Great pictures. BUT You have to remember stuff like this goes out of date. Remember the Nikon D1X ANYONE???.. The D1X was insane when it was launched. Now it is obsolete. This will also get its turn to become osolete. As you said.... It is changing ALL OF THE TIME. You sumed it up.. Great camera But not worth FIVE GRAND.
The camera has a true range which is the ISO speeds regulated by the International Standards Organisation (ISO). It also has expandable settings that aren't regulated by the Organisation so can't be called (eg) ISO25,600, it has to be called (eg) Hi2. HTH.
No, this isn't right. The Hi modes are not true ISO ranges because they are reached by overdriving the sensor. It's not because the Organization hasn't regulated them. It's that they are not real, they are done in software.
I believe that this has to have the same sensor as the Sony A900. I mean, let's face it, the D3x came out not long after the A900. A manufacturer would not reinvent the wheel when the sensor was already available from Sony. The lower noise than Sony A900 can be attributed to different processing of the image. Maybe Nikon uses more intensive noise reduction, in which case, I'd prefer to see the noise. I am in favor of less processing. If I want to process image, let me do that in post
I was referring to the primeval part of a man that needs something rugged and big to feel more manly. Car enthusiasts enjoy big cars or louder engines. But I guess it's the lovely smooth drive that makes you feel like a man.Y
ou get a lovely detailed image of a pink rabbit wearing a tutu and a ribbon and you'll feel like a man? lol, go away if you have nothing useful to contribute.
The D3X is a camera for it's "own" kind of people. It's not aimed at those who use or need the D3 which is more like a sport / reportage camera.
D3X is more of a studio or landscape camera where you most often use tripods and don't need the higher ISOs. Nikon didn't release the D3X just to get everybody to think "hey, it's got like 12 more megapixels, I have to buy it", since it's aimed at professional photographers who knows what they're buying.
if i had to choose between this camera and the d3 or d700, i could have to choose those 2 over the d3x. i would make this choice because i know that i would be getting an excellent quality camera regardless and could pocket that left over money towards getting a great lens to go along with it. don't get trapped in the megapixel wars everybody! you can resize an image to fit numerous dimensions in programs such as Lightroom.
The D3X isnt a hi ISO camera For its intended purpose, it performs magnificantly Its like whining about paying 250K for a Lambo and complaining of its off road performance. Use it in a studio or shoot landscapes. Then if you have complaints, ok Nikon has a hi ISO camera they needed a hi MP studio/landscape camera an entry level, portable, med format camera They hit the bulls eye. I ask that you judge it on its intended purpose.
I think if I bought a 250k lambo and it had 4WD but couldn't go off road then yes I'd complain. The D3x has the ability to go to ISO6400 but is rubbish compared to a camera half it's price.
I think youd be hard pressed to find anyone that owns this camera using it at 6400. Not much need for that in a studio or landscape photography. Therefore, your main criticism of this camera is irrelevant. If youre evaluating quality at those ISOs, use the camera whos intention was to perform at those levels, the D3. Why not delve into IQ or DR instead?
You're missing the point. Are you suggesting that you're willing to pay that amount for a camera and it give inferior results to a camera less than half its price? If I was to invest in a D3x, I'd want it to perform excellently at all speeds.
Completely, well almost completely, wrong of you to compare the Sony or the Canon to the D3x. Not even CLOSE to being in the same field or image quality performance.
Comparing these models simply because of MP rating is ludicrous. Why don't you compare apples to apples? The only true competitor in the market is the 1DsMIII, which is what the D3x was up against.
Do some true color, noise, IQ, body construction, processing etc. and you will start to see the distance become much greater.
You're right in some of your argument, the D3x is in a separate league to the A900 and the 5D MkII. The main reason for all the comparisons is that Sony made the sensor and the A900 (same resolution) suffers badly from noise.
The 5D MkII is slightly less res, but has far superior image quality. Could studio/stock photographers not use a 5D MkII? Surely the result justifies the means? And cost is a major issue if it's your business.
Trying it out myself since yesterday. I don't know why people compare this camera with that of the A900 or the 5D MarkII. This is a camera which is aimed at prof. studio & stock photographers who use the camera for 99% under total controlled conditions. It is aimed at photographers who have a need for it, and are not endlessly farting about how expensive it is in relation to the consumer models of Canon and Sony. This camera is in a different league, here in Japan price is going down quickly.
then nikon bring out the D3S and blows it away

Theoretically, the Hassy isn't a DSLR. It doesn't have a prism and is classed as medium format.
Other cameras with interchangeable lenses that don't have prisms have been left out of the DSLR name such as the Olympus E-P1 and Panny G1/GH1. =:O)

How is 100 to 1600 true ISO vs. 50 or higher then 1600 when ISO on a Digital system is only the gain for the amp that relays the signal ?
Also, it is the lens and the shot that should make you feel like a man, not the body.
