  • Fai paura...

  • That sir with the gibson is just doing too much. Esperanza has such a talent for rhythm and groove and this guy... is just such a typical guitar player. Instrumental masturbation.

  • @caughtinyourquagmire What the hell are you talking about, the cat's clearly pocket straight pocket playin not too much, or over crowding everyone.

  • Ohh nega cheia de charme ... amei!

  • Esperanza be thy name!

It's a shame that she sings this smiling. Brazil is not only fun and joyness. The lyrics reflects a somber, tragic period of our country. Sometimes, contemporary jazz flattens everything. I'm very shamed that Chico Pinheiro also doesn't pointed it. For her, non-portuguese speaker we can understand. Bot for him, how alienated. This is more than "latin jazz". But she is very, very talented indeed.

  • Talented young lady...period!!!!

  • I love her version. I have heard the original version. Her version is sweet and soothing. I play this song for my child. Her Brasilian pronunciation maybe lacking but her melody is addictive and I think of this song often through my day. I am just happy that she went outside the parameters of US and embraced something new. She is of mixed Hispanic descent & black, not Brazilian. But does that really matter? We're all descendants of Africans and that's where we are bond. That is OUR root.

  • Nossa, ela arrasa!!!!

Pode cantar em inglês, espanhol, português!!!

Além de linda tem uma voz incrível!!!!!

  • she heals.

  • does anybody know where to find the score of this amazing master piece?

  • Esperanza é incrivel...

Esses fas babacas do babaca do Justin Bier devem ir pra casa do caralho!

  • @debygui2007

    huahauhauha, isso ae!

  • Sensacional, hein?

  • caraio q mina zica!!!!!!!!!

  • Cute. But she didn't capture the song's essence.

  • ESPERANZA QUEBRA TUDO! BANDA ARRASANDO. E A NEGA LINDA , COMO SEMPRE! SUINGUEIRA DA BOA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Essa mulher é imoral !!!

  • omg-prob one of the finest women on the face of the earth!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sorry my English, but I agree with ktbeverlasting: this version is poor if I make a comparison with the original recorder by Milton Nascimento and even that other version recorded by Milton and Wayne Shorter... Jazz is good but... Where is the brazilian feeling?

  • she brazilian..you fucking dick snots

  • @shuvva She's not Brazilian. She's American. Born in Portland Oregon.

  • can i have sex with her already

    Obrigado meu Deus

  • This reminds me so much of Amana Melome...youtube(dot)com/watch?v=vAfn0jtfEnE

  • she's so pretty without trying and she has a beautiful voice and she has talent!!! and she's soo different :) i'm 16 and i do like a lot of mainstream music but i admire her more than any of those clowns! :)

  • @bombanarquistas sem duvidas...

  • perfeita..emocionante..

  • Shes very talented but this is awful-Why do so many young Jazz musicians insist on pointless reharmonisation!-- the whole point of this song is the pure simplicity of the harmony--talk about gilding the lily!!

listen to the Brasilian group Boca Livres version on Youtube- its really beautiful

  • @1953django Awful? That's pretty strong. I've seen the Boca Livres, very beautiful. I think you could've found a better word to describe it and frankly she did it, along with her touch, just how Milton Nascimento and Wayne Shorter (the original creators of this song) did theirs.

  • @KTBEverlasting Well for a start the original version is not by Milton AND Wayne Shorter--thats a later version which leans towards the jazzier side of things and is not as good as Miltons original recorded in Brasil

Milton is the original creator and him alone.

I did say she was very talented and she is but i think it shows American Jazz musicians typically ignorant approach to Brazilian music

  • @1953django , the irony is, today Americans do not know Brazilian music at all, so whatever little our artists have to offer is what we know.

  • @1953django

Yes! You've said the truth. Most of jazz musicians never learned the Brasilian music, but they like to play it, make overcomplicated arangements and spoil it in the bliss of their ignorance-arrogance. Reminds me of catching a wild fish and than cooking it for two hours, putting 20 spices, cream and mayonease on it!

  • Shes very talented but this is awful!!--listen to the Brasilian group Boca Livres version on Youtube- its really beautiful

  • I can't get over Esperanza ... Both her beauty and talent are equal and it comes out wonderfully in her music. Amazing.

  • ela conseguiu obter um sotaque brasileiro lindíiiiissimo!

  • gorgeous voice. every clip I've seen of her though, I would LOVE to be able to Hear the base more!

  • The language of Brazil isn't Spanish ?

    O.O

    I feel stupid .

  • @ishootbutterflywings one of the countrys who speaks portuguese

Eu não escrevo New York... escrevo Nova York. É a mesma coisa. Bju

  • wow... isn't she brazilian? her brazilian portuguese is perfect, no american accent

  • he voice make me ......... is a p***a

  • Saudade do trem da minha terra.

  • chico pinheiro e .. quem é o outro guitar?

  • "Ponta de areia ponto final. da Bahia-Minas estrada natural, que ligava Minas ao porto ao mar. caminho de ferro mandaram arrancar" my childhood, good version, i'm in love..

  • Can u people stop arguing about friking language and listent ot the music !!

  • VOU FICAR ETERNAMENTE ARREPIADA COM ESSA VERSÃO!!!!TALENTO E RESPEITO À MÚSICA SÃO AS DEFINIÇÕES PARA ESPERANZA!!!!!!

  • WOW SHES GOOD :D ....i dont wat shes saying but still :)

  • She's American, singing a Brazilian song in Portuguese. (Brazil's language is Portuguese, FYI)

    Perfectly, btw.

  • @fpenog as a brazilian I have to say she has no accent - almost sounds like a brazilian, that's amazing.

  • @KingTabor Realmente! Ela não tem sotaque! Impressionantemente lindo!

  • MUSIC HAS NO NATIONALITY IT IS GOOD OR BAD NUFF SAID

  • @bira_britoII Muito bom, maravilha!!!

  • i also play a instrument like her haha

  • Damn, what is this? Good music? For Real? Mmmmm I can just taste that baseline

  • What a great talent she is!!

  • That guitar player is really sick. Nice interpretation of a song that didn't have guitar on the recording.

  • @ericwolff6

The guitar is awful; formula jazz which has not an ounce of Brasilian feel to it.

He's just noodling and not connecting to the piece at all except to slather gerneric jazz licks all over it.

  • @ericwolff6

Yes, he is sick. His solo has nothing to do with the song, no respect for the melody. But the whole version is that way, so no big deal. Talent means nothing if you have no taste.

  • great bass player fantastic voice what a future shes got in music

  • I'm American and i sing in portuguese or any language I feel like.

  • Sooo bad! Please people i hate JB but his songs are with any ritme and aren't so low...

Listn bruno mars or eminem or travi but listen omething goods!!

  • @bjk19fan if you dont like the music, dont watch the video.

other people are here, enjoying the music and you dont have to ruin it for them.

  • @bjk19fan WTF man don't tell me what to listen to especially if its.. eminem HAHAHAHA

  • Whatever she is . . it is beautiful. SO much talent!

  • How can anyone, in their infinite ignorance even bring himself or herself to try to compare this real and true ARTIST with record label-marketing-engineered byproducts like Bieber or any MTV or American Idol contestant? It really makes you wonder what this world is coming to... The advent of MTV and American Idol has destroyed and warped the taste for good music. It´s a total and real shame. Enjoy this true ARTIST.

  • Look at how much she's ENJOYING playing her instrument... that's what I'm talkin about. PASSION!!!!! I wish I knew more folks like her around my city so we could jam out JUST BECAUSE!!!!!!

  • I can't even believe there would be an Esperanza Spalding vs. Justin Bieber argument.

  • congratulation!!!!!!!!!!111 congratulacoes !!!!

  • Who the hell cares what nationality she is? We are still too hung up on race and where a person comes from. People are people. Talent is talent and this young lady has the talent. I had never heard of this young lady until the World News Friday night! I am not a huge fan of Justin Bieber but like a few songs. If she beat him out so what. It is time to let some new frest talent come into the lime light. He wasn't upset about it so why should anyone else?

  • @74molly This girl is actually a musician, whereas Justin Beiber is just a pretty face and auto tune

  • @74molly - You are absolutely right!

  • she has that million dollar smile! :D

she's and amazing musician, vocalist and seems like a great person!

  • She's amazing to watch and hear. Great artist.

  • Ok Fellas, She is from Portland Oregon, born and raised there. She got her education in music there and at Berkley. Shes been in music since 5, speaks English, Spanish and Portuguese. She is a great musician and yes she is Black American, shes not from Africa.

  • @firstchoice1956: Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA, not UC Berkeley, CA

  • @deepkeel65 thank you for the correction, in the heat of the moment I forgot. I know right where that music campus is...1 quarter of a mile north of Commonwealth Avenue.

  • to rogernunnes:

Thank you I'll listen. These names aren't new... for anyone. But it's time I don't listen to jazz. It could be theright time.

  • Guys, he didn't say she is SINGING Spanish, he said she SPEAKS IT! And SHE DOES!

  • where does she come from ? i know she was born in the us. but she got dark skin

  • As a Brazilian I can say we cannot critize people of other nationalities for not knowing about our culture, history or geography. Ask a brazilian anything about Russia, Hungary or Astria. Historically they are more important than Brazil is.

By the way: Spalding is doing a great job singing such a nice song in such a nice voice in perfepct portuguese!

  • gosto demais dessa menina

  • I know Esperanza since 2 minutes. please tell me 3 songs that you think justify her Grammy. Thank you. (I rarely listen to jazz).

Start watching her first three singles: this one, "Ponta de Areia", "Precious" and "I know You Know".

For knowing jazz, start searching also for: Miles Davis, Herbie Hancocck, Wes Montgomery, Dave Brubeck and Dizzy Gllespie.

And about brasilian jazz: Hermeto Pascoal e Arismar do Espírito Santo.

    I hope I helped you!

  • portuguese is not from brazil, its from portugal!

  • So she's not really Brazilian; why does she sing in Portuguese? I'm just curious.

  • @yoroshiku cause she can.

  • simply great !! fabulous. !!as a brazilian and jazz lover ,i'm speech less.

how dare is a justin bieber ? he can't beat her..or he can still thinking.....that's it.

  • Stop stereotyping countries that you know nothing about, will you? Show some respect. And pay attention to the music, it's really good stuff

  • She's so talented, I can't believe she can sing in portuguese this good. Great job!

  • Wow @SuperGamer87 you CALLED IT!!!! Good ear.

  • I feel like she'd be more badass if she wasn't popular, i hope she stays herself

  • Only the stupid think that the Brazil's language is spanish....

  • Esperanza, congratulations on winning best new artist at the grammy awards....the fact that you beat out justin beiber makes it that much sweeter...i've been listening to your music since junjo....you deserve it, love...

  • I love the portuguese from brazil <3

  • Not all Americans think that. There are some that know that it is Portuguese.

  • Absolutely beautiful; REAL MUSIC!!!!!

  • Really enjoyed the fact that many americans came here to refute this stupid generalization of a generalization. Every country has their share of stupid people

  • @yanoah1412 Well you can lick... MY BALLS!

  • @yanoah1412 then why the hell are you watching this? How about instead of wasting your time you go listen to something you like.....

  • the geddy lee of jazz?

  • Lol I love the way she looks. It seems fun; she doesn't look nervous at all. :)

  • how could anyone dislike this what is wrong with it?

  • fuck Just "sucker" the grammy not is for you!!!kkkkkk

  • not all of us

  • Portuguese.

  • For a lot of people that do not understand the world of music is for gifted people not for artificial musician like britney spears or Justin Beaber.

Esperanza Spalding is a gifted musician and she is at the same level than lady gaga because they both are gifted musicians.

  • She reminds me of Zuco 103. Nice.

  • XUUUUUUPAAAAAAA JUSTIN!!! GRAMMY NÃO É PRA PIRRALHOS!!!

  • Who is? ; >

  • 2 haters too many on this one

  • nao intendo nada o k ela ta falando!

  • Yay for her winning a grammy!

    someone who actually deserves it!

    enfim...mto bom

  • massa...

  • @22TheZap But art doesn't bring sense in its every expression.

  • Just in case some were wondering, she speaks Spanish fluently because she's of Spanish ancestry. Her mother is Spanish, Welsh and Native American ancestry, and her father is African-American.

  • @SuperGamer87 She is not singing in Spanish, she is singing in Portuguese. All Americans think the language of Brazil is Spanish...

  • @conradopaulino No, I'm quite aware that Brazil speaks Portuguese AND Spanish, and my Portuguese friends pound my about there being a difference between the two languages. I just don't know either language well enough. I thought she was singing Spanish because she's of Spanish ancestry, that's all. You don't have to go insulting my nationality and all. It's an easy mistake! Sheesh.

  • @SuperGamer87 My friend, the only official language spoken in Brazil is the Portuguese, so you could cut the "AND Spanish" bit if what you want is to show you and your people are not as ignorant as you really are! LOL

  • @ncmqueiros "your people." Ok, so every bad brazilian i meet, i will tell them to cut it out so they can stop making youself and YOUR people as ignorant as you seem. I hate people like you who cant realize no one can generalize a country of millions, we are all human. Get over yourself, not one person is better or worse than another.

  • @omfgyahh

    oh stfu

  • @conradopaulino That's an awfully obtuse statement.

  • @conradopaulino

uhh you mean "All Americans think the language of Portugal is Spanish"

  • @Rao665 No, it makes sense the way it was written. Most people in general, not just Americans, make the mistake of thinking the common language of Brazil is Spanish. It is in fact Portuguese, although there are many Brazilians who can speak Spanish as well.

  • @mscelestin914 i'm American and i've known for a long time that Portugese is the main language of Brazil. we're not all ignorant dumbasses, although i can understand why you'd think we are.

  • Comment removed

  • @mscelestin914

So if the language of Spain is Portuguese, and the language of Brazil is Spanish. then what is the language of Portugal?

  • @Rao665 Brazilian. That's all that's left. Or maybe Somali.

  • @Rao665 the song's brazilian. they speak Portuguese in Brazil.

  • Comment removed

  • @smoothandbold

    bacana

    i didn't know that.

  • @conradopaulino not all of us

  • @conradopaulino

Not all of us. Just the ignorant ones.

  • @conradopaulino lol is that a joke? I have never met an american who thinks brazilians speak spanish. Stop generalizing.

  • @conradopaulino we don't all think that.
