That sir with the gibson is just doing too much. Esperanza has such a talent for rhythm and groove and this guy... is just such a typical guitar player. Instrumental masturbation.
Pena que ela canta isso rindo. Alguém tem que explicar à ela o sentido da letra. It's a shame that she sings this smiling. Brazil is not only fun and joyness. The lyrics reflects a somber, tragic period of our country. Sometimes, contemporary jazz flattens everything. I'm very shamed that Chico Pinheiro also doesn't pointed it. For her, non-portuguese speaker we can understand. Bot for him, how alienated. This is more than "latin jazz". But she is very, very talented indeed.
I love her version. I have heard the original version. Her version is sweet and soothing. I play this song for my child. Her Brasilian pronunciation maybe lacking but her melody is addictive and I think of this song often through my day. I am just happy that she went outside the parameters of US and embraced something new. She is of mixed Hispanic descent & black, not Brazilian. But does that really matter? We're all descendants of Africans and that's where we are bond. That is OUR root.
Sorry my English, but I agree with ktbeverlasting: this version is poor if I make a comparison with the original recorder by Milton Nascimento and even that other version recorded by Milton and Wayne Shorter... Jazz is good but... Where is the brazilian feeling?
she's so pretty without trying and she has a beautiful voice and she has talent!!! and she's soo different :) i'm 16 and i do like a lot of mainstream music but i admire her more than any of those clowns! :)
Shes very talented but this is awful-Why do so many young Jazz musicians insist on pointless reharmonisation!-- the whole point of this song is the pure simplicity of the harmony--talk about gilding the lily!!

@1953django Awful? That's pretty strong. I've seen the Boca Livres, very beautiful. I think you could've found a better word to describe it and frankly she did it, along with her touch, just how Milton Nascimento and Wayne Shorter (the original creators of this song) did theirs.
@KTBEverlasting Well for a start the original version is not by Milton AND Wayne Shorter--thats a later version which leans towards the jazzier side of things and is not as good as Miltons original recorded in Brasil
Milton is the original creator and him alone.
I did say she was very talented and she is but i think it shows American Jazz musicians typically ignorant approach to Brazilian music
Yes! You've said the truth. Most of jazz musicians never learned the Brasilian music, but they like to play it, make overcomplicated arangements and spoil it in the bliss of their ignorance-arrogance. Reminds me of catching a wild fish and than cooking it for two hours, putting 20 spices, cream and mayonease on it!
@tobisouza Lògico que eu sei que em inglês é escrito com "Z". Foi apenas uma forma de de mostrar meu amor e respeito ao país.Eu não escrevo New York... escrevo Nova York. É a mesma coisa. Bju
"Ponta de areia ponto final. da Bahia-Minas estrada natural, que ligava Minas ao porto ao mar. caminho de ferro mandaram arrancar" my childhood, good version, i'm in love..
Yes, he is sick. His solo has nothing to do with the song, no respect for the melody. But the whole version is that way, so no big deal. Talent means nothing if you have no taste.
How can anyone, in their infinite ignorance even bring himself or herself to try to compare this real and true ARTIST with record label-marketing-engineered byproducts like Bieber or any MTV or American Idol contestant? It really makes you wonder what this world is coming to... The advent of MTV and American Idol has destroyed and warped the taste for good music. It´s a total and real shame. Enjoy this true ARTIST.

maravilhoso, linda canção parabéns pelo gramyy esperanza, obrigado por impedir que o justin bibinha leva-se um premio como este, parebéns viva a verdadeira musica, viva a arte.
As a Brazilian I can say we cannot critize people of other nationalities for not knowing about our culture, history or geography. Ask a brazilian anything about Russia, Hungary or Astria. Historically they are more important than Brazil is.
By the way: Spalding is doing a great job singing such a nice song in such a nice voice in perfepct portuguese!
Esperanza, congratulations on winning best new artist at the grammy awards....the fact that you beat out justin beiber makes it that much sweeter...i've been listening to your music since junjo....you deserve it, love...

Just in case some were wondering, she speaks Spanish fluently because she's of Spanish ancestry. Her mother is Spanish, Welsh and Native American ancestry, and her father is African-American.
@conradopaulino No, I'm quite aware that Brazil speaks Portuguese AND Spanish, and my Portuguese friends pound my about there being a difference between the two languages. I just don't know either language well enough. I thought she was singing Spanish because she's of Spanish ancestry, that's all. You don't have to go insulting my nationality and all. It's an easy mistake! Sheesh.
@SuperGamer87 My friend, the only official language spoken in Brazil is the Portuguese, so you could cut the "AND Spanish" bit if what you want is to show you and your people are not as ignorant as you really are! LOL
@ncmqueiros "your people." Ok, so every bad brazilian i meet, i will tell them to cut it out so they can stop making youself and YOUR people as ignorant as you seem. I hate people like you who cant realize no one can generalize a country of millions, we are all human. Get over yourself, not one person is better or worse than another.
@Rao665 No, it makes sense the way it was written. Most people in general, not just Americans, make the mistake of thinking the common language of Brazil is Spanish. It is in fact Portuguese, although there are many Brazilians who can speak Spanish as well.
@mscelestin914 i'm American and i've known for a long time that Portugese is the main language of Brazil. we're not all ignorant dumbasses, although i can understand why you'd think we are.

You can’t deform and distort the truly nature of a song in name of art
Singing a sad song with a smile on your face doesn’t make much sense for me.

Just in case some were wondering, she speaks Spanish fluently because she's of Spanish ancestry. Her mother is Spanish, Welsh and Native American ancestry, and her father is African-American.

@SuperGamer87 She is not singing in Spanish, she is singing in Portuguese. All Americans think the language of Brazil is Spanish...

Sheesh.
SuperGamer87 1 year ago
@SuperGamer87 My friend, the only official language spoken in Brazil is the Portuguese, so you could cut the "AND Spanish" bit if what you want is to show you and your people are not as ignorant as you really are! LOL

@ncmqueiros "your people." Ok, so every bad brazilian i meet, i will tell them to cut it out so they can stop making youself and YOUR people as ignorant as you seem. I hate people like you who cant realize no one can generalize a country of millions, we are all human. Get over yourself, not one person is better or worse than another.

@conradopaulino
uhh you mean "All Americans think the language of Portugal is Spanish"
Rao665 11 months ago
@Rao665 No, it makes sense the way it was written. Most people in general, not just Americans, make the mistake of thinking the common language of Brazil is Spanish. It is in fact Portuguese, although there are many Brazilians who can speak Spanish as well.
mscelestin914 11 months ago
@mscelestin914 i'm American and i've known for a long time that Portugese is the main language of Brazil. we're not all ignorant dumbasses, although i can understand why you'd think we are.

Rao665 11 months ago
