  • If you live in Canada you can now purchase an excellent composting toilet with a seat that lifts which I like a lot better. The Air Head Composting toilet should definitely be considered when buying. Learn more at gaiamarineDOTcom

  • 800??????????

  • Can it handle TP?

  • when it comes time to empty the composted waste, where are you supposed to do it? is it perfectly fine to find some area on the land to just dig a hole and empty the waste, or is there an actual facility you are supposed to go to?

  • @thaiguysabu You can spread it any where you like, grass, shrubs, flower gardens, on top of anything you want to grow. Federal regulations prohibit you from applying it to vegetable gardens or fruit trees but anything else is fare game. I have one of these in my motorhome. I like it cause I don't have to feel bad when I dump it in a park cause I'm just helping trees.

  • Hello- you say emptying is required only every 2 months for two users? Is this for fulltime use?

Also, would the venting system release odor outside a small cabin? ie. will it smell outside? or would any odor get drafted back inside if windows are open?

  • @mounttaborhermit , yes, yes, yes, a bit, and not appreciably.

  • @mounttaborhermit Your adding peat moss to the waste so there really is no smell because the solids are separate from the liquid.

  • @rawmark hmm- you see, I'm thinking of building a boat with a very small cabin- and the head would end up being pretty close to the sitting area- so I was worried about if it would be unpleasant for guests- a design flaw that would be kind of unforgiving :-/

Also with mostly single person use, I was hoping to be able to rotate just a couple bins each year so it won't be icky when I dispose of it- letting rest for 4 months or so. Do you think that would work?

  • @mounttaborhermit No, it won't be icky at all as long as you mix peat moss or sawdust with it and turn it every time it's used. It needs time to breakdown the solids into compost. So, four months is nothing. As long as you have proper ventilation, which you want on a boat, you'll be fine.

  • does that top half detach so you can dump it or do you have to scoop the dirt out?

  • @wheelori814 it tips back for scooping, or you can remove the whole unit for dumping.

  • I'm very interested in getting one of these for my Airstream, they look very well-designed. A delicate question: what happens if the solid waste isn't solid, I mean, well, like if someone has "the runs". Does it still work in terms of the separation without getting too nasty? Thanks in advance.

  • @CaptLandYacht The absorbent material will take care of this.

  • Can you put toilet paper in there, or do you have to store your nasty toilet paper somewhere else? Does it not use water to flush? If not, how do you keep the bowl clean?

  • @Madwand1 yes, paper goes in there. It's easy to wipe down with paper, and drop the used paper inside.

  • I've now looked at several brands of these, as well as some homemade solutions. I'm building a small cabin on a rocky, ancient volcano where a conventional septic system (or even grid electric) is impractical. So far this looks to be the best toilet solution for several reasons: price, compact size, liquid/solid separation, ease of installation, durability, solar vent fan cap, and you don't have to climb a step-stool to use it. Unless I see something better first, I believe I'll get me one.

  • @DROPOUT2001 Are you ready to order? I'm including a ebook package on rain water harvesting, solar water heating, and greywater recycling with each order.

  • So every time you empty the urine bottle, you have to open the top and see the solids?? What about the gaskets? How often do they have to be replaced?

Would two of these be enough for a family of four?

What do you do with it when you empty it?

  • @SimonKentSmith I empty it into a bucket, which goes to next years garden spot. two of these would easily be enough for a family of four. And yes, you see inside when you open the top, but what you see is "dirt", as the cotents are mixed with the cover material, and are dry.

  • I meant month:)

  • Thanks for showing this. I am getting one of these next months!

  • @TheLiveaboards I look forward to serving you. Ordering info is in the video details.
