This whole debate is just ignorant because 99% of the MMA fighters take some form of enhancement. Whether its prescribed for an injury or otherwise. Simply some are more adept at timing their steroid cycles so as to test negative. Sadly, in sports its only cheating if you get caught. I believe that Royce would not knowingly use something to cheat. He simply doesnt need to he is blessed with gifts.

As for other fighters, it takes a few months for steroids to leave less of a trace so you don't get sanctioned. Considering how much time they have between fights, there is no "cycle" of usage they can try to fit between tests.

Atleast they are using it for good things.What academy do you know of that has gave kids 10 weeks of free training so they could learn how to defend their selves? No one. None of the Gracies tapped to Sakaraba both Renzo and Royce had bones broken before the end of the match Royler didn't tap either. It was the deepest kimura I ever seen. Not to take away from Sakaraba achievements but it should be noted. No telling what would have happened with Rickson a fight could always go either way That's part of the beauty of the sport.
Sakuraba is a very good athlete, but more than that, he is a Monster created by Gracie´s family. Rickson was always the best, but he had several issues in his personal life during these years, and all the problems culminated with the death of this soon. Today Rickson is out of activity and he won´t come back and Gracie family learned what they needed at that given time: Ju-Jutso has to be followed as DO and TAO: One day you are up, another you are down, always moving ahead.

Almost everyone on here posting comments has good, valid points, I must say. My only comment is reffering to Royce when he first started losing. I don't believe that he started losing because he was past his prime. After UFC #4 he and Rorion separated themselves from Rickson and the rest of the family. Rickson was always a better instructor than Rorion, so from that point Royce was missing crucial training tactics. He started losing in his mid 30's. Rickson fought Funaki at age 41 and rocked.
I gotta disagree with you a bit about why Royce started losing. Not knocking any of the family you mentioned, but if you look at his career he started losing when the rest of the mma world caught up. Fighters became more complete and learned to counter submission or to be patient and keep it a stand up fight and stay out of the gracie guard.
asside from Renzo and Ryan the gracies were inefective on their feet really. Age did get Royce, not being a well rounded fighter did.

You can tell that Renzo is smarter than your average MMA fighter. Many MMA fighters are to filled with energy and emotion that they don't always make sense or sound smart during an interview. I still think Bas Rutten has the best personality

It seems like the Gracie clan r cutting him off the clan.
This is clear when Renzo says "Royce puts himself a little bit out of the family". All I hear is he brought shame to the clan and embarassed us all so we are now saying he has nothing to do with us.
Relson says something similar in an interview.

None of the Gracies tapped to Sakaraba both Renzo and Royce had bones broken before the end of the match Royler didn't tap either. It was the deepest kimura I ever seen. Not to take away from Sakaraba achievements but it should be noted. No telling what would have happened with Rickson a fight could always go either way That's part of the beauty of the sport.

If Rickson would have fought sakuraba first and won. It would have given the rest of the gracie's confidence to beat him.
After the first gracie lost, they looked at sakuraba as superior and fought from a weaker position.

Sakuraba is a very good athlete, but more than that, he is a Monster created by Gracie´s family. Rickson was always the best, but he had several issues in his personal life during these years, and all the problems culminated with the death of this soon. Today Rickson is out of activity and he won´t come back and Gracie family learned what they needed at that given time: Ju-Jutso has to be followed as DO and TAO: One day you are up, another you are down, always moving ahead.

He bjj was utilize in conjuction with other arts and training. Kazushi Sakuraba was the only MMA fighter to ever beat all four Gracies... (Royler, Royce, Renzo, and Ryan)
No one saw the second match up... The first match was shown all over the world and Sakuraba went down in the history books forever as "The Gracie Hunter."
He also gave Royler, Royce, and Ryan their first loses and Renzo his second.
Royce knew he couldn't beat Sakuraba and didn't want to give his people shame so instead used drugs to win the second match with dishonor.

ok... so lets say you get into a fight with a guy who's not wearing a hoody, jacket, suit, tie, shirt, sweatshirt, scarf etc......
training with a gi on doesn't limit you to gi-only submissions. you can still do armbars, rear chokes, ankle locks, guillotines with a gi on.....
training with a gi on gives you the choice of all the gi and nogi moves..... training nogi only lets you use nogi moves..... which do you do die643?

Rickson went down as saying that the current fighters are bad etc etc and he would easily beat some of them (like Fedor and Big Nog) in an edition of Tokyo Sports.
Wanderlei basically said he was living in a fantasy world in response to that.
Given even Helio dispute's Rickson's claims of having over 400 unanswered wins, I'd say it's fairly safe to say Rickson is a bit.. out of touch.

I have heard these statements before and I myself a huge gracie fan, will agree with you that no he wouldnt beat them in MMA, but he would submit both of them in gi jiu-jitsu ( just saying). 400-0 record is a bit of a stretch im sure, but all of the gracies say he is the best in the family.

Almost everyone on here posting comments has good, valid points, I must say. My only comment is reffering to Royce when he first started losing. I don't believe that he started losing because he was past his prime. After UFC #4 he and Rorion separated themselves from Rickson and the rest of the family. Rickson was always a better instructor than Rorion, so from that point Royce was missing crucial training tactics. He started losing in his mid 30's. Rickson fought Funaki at age 41 and rocked.

I gotta disagree with you a bit about why Royce started losing. Not knocking any of the family you mentioned, but if you look at his career he started losing when the rest of the mma world caught up. Fighters became more complete and learned to counter submission or to be patient and keep it a stand up fight and stay out of the gracie guard.
asside from Renzo and Ryan the gracies were inefective on their feet really. Age did get Royce, not being a well rounded fighter did.

non skilled?he beat Shamrock in less than two minutes the first time, and fought to a draw in 35 minutes the second. He won 3 UFC's when it was twice as brutal as it is now, fighting as many as four guys in one night. He started losing once he was past his prime just like any fighter

No one knew about bjj (including shamrock), only the gracies. Fighters back then don't compare to fighters now. It doesent matter how many guys you fight in one night if they all suck. Now, we have top level well rounded athletes like anderson silva. Try fighting 4 of them in one night lol!!

You mean the "Big fish in the small pond" phenomena? The Gracie Grapplers are much more skilled at their grappling than 98% of the strikers are at their striking. In fact, most strikers who hold black belts should be relegated to three or four belts back. I will enumerate to you, what is, IMHO, an exceptionally excellent fighter. I am only limited to 500 character spaces.
