  • and TWIST! gotta love sweeney

  • This song makes me so sad...

  • You can hear Angela's voice starting to go, yet she nails everything. I LOVE HER!

  • Oh... That moment where he realizes he's murdered his wife, and his breakdown afterward, is my favorite scene out of any play I've ever seen... So powerful and sad...

  • Johnny Depp's Sweeney was very quiet and brooding, whilst this Sweeney is loud, in your face, and more outwardly mad than the movie. As I've said before, I love all the versions for different reasons. Each actor/actress brings something different to the part. And again, things are different in the theatre than in movies. Some things don't translate well.

  • I don't like the Mrs.Lovett here but she did an ok job. I think Patti Lupone's the BEST Mrs. Lovett ever. :)

  • Actually i think...in the part where Sweeney discovers that the beggar woman he killed was Lucy...I think the emotion and quietness that Johnny Depp showed made it more emotional...sorta like he can't believe what is lying in front of him...in this musical the shock shown in a loud way kinda made the scene really different

  • Is Toby actually supposed to have a mental disorder?

  • The musical is way better, the Sweeney Todd character showed more emotion compared to the Johnny Depp character (Depp's performance was good nonetheless). Overall, there was only one thing I admit I liked in the movie better and that was the character of Johanna. I prefer her naivety and innocence in the movie rather than her strong willed character here, but I still think the character did great. Feel free to shoot me a hate comment, but honestly I prefer a mature comment about it.

  • does anyone think that Sweeney's face gets more and more skeletal as the show progresses

  • Is toby stupid in the play? LMAO

  • @Nester211 tobias is actually mentally handicapped they dont have it on this one but he has a scar in a later revival to show where he had a lobotomy

  • Tobias breaks my heart here.

  • I don't know which reaction to lucy's death is better...their most fantastic, hmm...

  • Fighting over which one is better is useless unless you can fully understand the requirements of each. As they are both done in completely different ways, one is a movie and one is a stage production, certain things on stage wouldnt work in a movie and certain ways characters are portrayed in movies will not suffice on stage. it's that simple, so until you can attempt to understand that, then you really are in no position to be arguing for either side (movie or stage production)

  • I know ill probley get told "films are never better than THEATRE, so go away!" But i do love theatre but on this case i actully felt (apart from lanburys performance) the movie was alot better, alot darker and alot more entertaining. I guess if you grew up with this performance youll never see any diffrence (same with me and jesus christ superstar)

  • Since no one has commented this yet, let me be the first thank you for posting this masterpeice!

  • Tim Burton is a genius i don't know what you guys are talking about. the play and the movie were both amazing all the actors did a fantastic job. doing a play on stage and on film are two completely different things, so of course different emotions were portrayed. love this story

  • wats wrong with toby at the end? did he go crazy?

  • hes crazy, thats who he is. Hes nothing like who he is in the movie

  • personally i like this and the movie.

    :)

  • OMG! I never knew Angela Lansbury had a role in this.

  • @mortvia Doesn't is seem funny that she can be Mrs. Lovette one second, then be Mrs. Potts from Beauty & the Beast the next? xD

  • Exactly! She's unbelievable!

  • I said it before and I'll say it again... this is the THEATRE not a movie. All the comments I read on all the clips make it sound like a populaity contest. The film was fine but no, Johnny Depp and H B Carter could never give these performances; they don't have the skill. Dubbing and take after take is a craft for film but to sustain these performances 8 times a week takes experience on a stage. STOP comparing them. Get out and see some theatre and learn... PLEASE!!!!!

  • @cliflejeune This may b theatre, but it doesnt automaticly make it a beter version. The movie version was alot more entertaining & fun.Like u say the movie did have multiple takes, etc. Still doesnt change the fact that It is the same story and the movie pulled off the telling of that story alot better than this version. IMO :) Also i think your last line is a little small minded. Jst because sum ppl dont 2 go a theatre once a week doesn't mean they cant tell which is a better telling of a story.

  • @chubbylilloser

Absolutely, you are entitled to see this the way you do which I totally appreciate as well as the fact that you see the brilliance of what Stephen Sondheim has created. My passion for the theatre also adds a degree of bias to my opinion. I just felt Johnny Depp's performance was much too one note and not very dynamic. But maybe it just isn't fair to compare film and theatre and what we prefer is our choice. Just wish people would go to the theatre before leveling it's merit.

  • @chubbylilloser Wow, you have no understanding of how theatre works.

  • @AliaSparrow Could you explain how i don't? :) Thanks.

  • @chubbylilloser how narrow minded of you u have no idea what theatre is

  • @nimma1zchaos Narrow minded because i am open minded to there being a different form of visual storytelling outside of theatre. From that comment it seems you are the narrow minded one.I can't believe the amount of negative comments i recive from just saying i thought one production was better than another. Just shows youtube nm what video you comment on or what comment you post will get a stream of neg comments from 'fan boys' Who are not willing to accept some one else has diff views from them

  • @cliflejeune About skill as you've said you can't compare the stage and the film so don't tell me Johnny Depp H B couldn't do it...

  • its brilliant how they showed toby change from an innocent boy to a madman. bless im and i think ken acts it out so well, bravo to toby.

  • good special effects for a play!

  • Define better :3

  • No, not really. The Play was done correctly, and the film was not. The movie made a lot of changes. The movie was more humorous, when it was supposed to me more dark and depressing, which is what the film did.

  • The movie itself, in my opinion, was well-executed but lacked so much.

The play was supposed to have dark and morbid humor. It's there if you look for it.

  • @khesed

The thing is they had to cut a lot of stuff from the movie, otherwise it would be to long or (in the case of the choir pieces) look out of place. They decided to cut the humour more in my opinion, I guess because Burton wanted to concentrate on the story. I really like the film I think the cast is near perfect. Not sure I could chose between the two.

  • @khesed

Personally, I think it's one of the best movie musicals ever put to screen. Oddly enough, I'm not even a Tim Burton fan, but I really liked it. It did an excellent job of converting the play to a balanced movie length. I'm not really sure which part of it lacks humor or darkness...

For the record, I've always loved the play.

  • @donkeysplooge i totaly agree with u there i thought johnny done a way better job of being sweeney he was made to be sweeney

  • @donkeysplooge dude, no wonder your comment was removed; you prefer Depp who only has one face in the movie. This one has emotion, which makes him all the more scarier than Johnny. Its like a representation of any other man; capable of evil, needing only a push to send him over.

  • @donkeysplooge honestly i agree with you.

  • Oh No Oh my god!!!! lol

  • wow toby looks like a hobo..and old

  • Toby is not supposed to be young, like the movie created him. In the script(which i own a copy of) it describes Tobias as Pirelli's "Simple-Minded Adolescant servant". Which is just what they play did. Adolescant doesnt mean young, he can be a young adult, which he is, in the play. In the play he is a bit on the mentally crazy side, but in the movie they just made him a kid.

  • the new one is better beter blood and acting

  • wow it was funny!! sweeny got too over dramatic!! johnny and helena did so much better, much better singing too!

  • i tottaly agree but this was the origonal

  • No. it is supposed to be dramatic. This scene is supposed to be the scene that "hits you" this scene really makes me feel bad for Sweeney, and the movie doesnt do that.

  • exactly right. exactly. Depp finds out his wife is dead... and he killed her, and yet... he carries the tune? no emotion whatsoever. he may as well have been asleep

  • i no what you meen, but you cant blame johnny! tim burton told him to do so, and he was the director, besides, in the move sweeney wanted to die cuz how bad he felt

  • well tim burton is a lazy hack, so i don't doubt that's how he wanted it.

    still.

johnny is an established actor, who has played some great roles... he is more than capable of disagreeing with a director if he thinks it should be played differently

  • you have to admit johnny and helena sang better tho

  • I don't think that at all.

  • @lolmuffins123 Well I loved it :)

  • i cried. oh man. i love this so much.

  • yeah johnny and helena did do better. you could tell in this one, especally todd was overdoing it.

  • perhaps but remember it's on stage so he sort of needs to over do it. Johnny was meant for the camera but Len was destined for the stage.

  • Wow, now that is a trajic plot twist! *speechless*

  • Great but a very weird toby

  • and lovett and sweeney.. and.. yah O.O

  • Great but a very weird toby

  • From what i've seen this seems to be the best play version!! The film tops everything though!!

  • yep. i agree. this is the best play version, but the movie is better.

  • This is an excellent play, and my favorite version. Thanks for posting it!

  • i think those two are great, but i prefer helena bonham carter and johnny depp

  • me too!

  • that Toby is very very disturbing....but brilliant!!

  • George and Angela are forever LEGENDS to this amazzing musical!

they both just simply ROCK in this! lol

  • I love more the voice of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham carter

  • yeah i thought that johnny and helena did a better job

  • much better.

  • I loved loved loved the movie, but I must say that I like this version better, Of course they are overacting a little bit, but after understanding the story and seeing both versions, you find this one more convincing than the movie, I mean... he killed his wife, it's obvious he'll freak out that way. And for Toby, to be a little kid and seeing all of those dead people and Mrs.Lovett beeing killed... no wonder why he turned all crazy and that!

  • in the movie it's also not so clear if lucy really is mad or not i think. in this play its really clear that she snapped out.

  • i could tell she was crazy

  • i love angela lansburry and george hearn

    best forever

  • hey isnt that angela lans..something from

    "murder she wrote" ahahahahaha

  • in the movie Toby didnt give this whole big speech be4 he killed him and in the movie he didnt go like crazy

  • well this is the play okay? the movie is shorter and different

  • well i like the movie more=]

  • Hate as you wish, i only posted THIS version because of the musical numbers. So grow up and stay out if all you're going to do is laud an actor's singing. Besides, the Len Cariou version was better, but sadly there isn't a full (high quality) video of his performance.

  • so creepy... i love it.

  • Honestly, I think the stage production is better than the film. Over-acting, yes. But in a stage show you can't see the facial expressions clearly (unless you watch it on DVD), and they need a loud voice. The movie is brilliant, but the stage production surpasses it I think.

  • i love both the play and the movie ^^

i like the movie just a little bitty bit

    hehe

  • And life is for the alive my dear, so let's keep living it, really living it, really living IT! AHHHH!!!! R.I.P. Nellie Lovett

  • Yup yup. I sent my friend Anna (a Broadway freak like me) a text message with all the lyrics of this song, lol. (Sweeney's part, anyway. She and I re-enact several scenes; she plays Mrs. Lovett, and I play Sweeney Todd.)

Poor little Ellen (Nelly) Lovett... all she wanted to do was love a big, strong, crazy man with a razor by lying (not telling the whole truth) about his wife and bake people into pies... So innocent!

  • And I'm sure Toby's wig has changed here?

  • his hair turned white when he went crazy

  • I Think..

    i Enjoyed the movie more.

because helena is such a good mrs. lovett and this chick isn't the most convincing i've seen.

    but Bravo! good job

  • I hate you.

  • okay okay woah.

    Sure, someone would freak out.

    But damn.

    A little over-acting...just a tad??

But overall I love this scene.

I like bothg the movie, and this version.

  • Yeah... this seems a bit loud. And then, when Mrs. Lovett gets flung into the oven, all you hear is one measley scream. Don't get me wrong, they're performances are pretty good. I just prefer Helena and Johnny's performances

  • Yes, over-acting but remember this is a stage version. if they kept the acting as minimal as they did for the film then it wouldn't have been enough for the stage.

  • what the heck was this?!?!?! the move was so much better. it seemed more demented. this just seemed silly

  • What the crap is with toby? Lol the voice is awesome! It makes me laugh i don't know why? This is awesome. I can't wait to see the movie!!!

  • I know!

Toby looks like an old man with a friggin' wig.

  • After seeing the movie, I watched this ending here before the rest of it and I would have agreed with Bellatrix. I just finished all of it though and I think it actually works better than the film.

  • i don't think so...did you see this whole DVD?

  • Well, this wasn't directed by Burton. And to be honest, the movie version underplayed a lot of character relationships.

  • @BellatrixNellieLovet You are right about that. But on stage musicals have to be acted out differently...

  • @NavaeraGreenleaf88 no right i know I am a musical theatre major but I just didn't like this one as much. my though, i got so many negative votes apparently people feel very different! haha

  • @BellatrixNellieLovet haha yeah no. The movie was not very good

  • @SigandGibbs hahah yeah no. neither is this.

  • @BellatrixNellieLovet Compared to other musicals, yes it is. Compared to other musicals and movies, the movie version wasn't very good . That's the problem when they hire people that can't sing.
