My short answer: it's both a science and an art. The best philosophizing primarily involves right hemisphere functions that are marginalized in today's world - functions of holistic, integrative, systemic thought, drawing together disparate ideas, including metaphysical ideas, in ways both true and beautiful. Accordingly, my favorite philosophers are Plato, Plotinus, and Hegel. Philosophical taste is like aesthetic taste - those resonant with one's unique personality are favored.
Both art and science are as woven with a fabric of philosophy as are our lives. Both are in many ways symbiotic entities which provide avenues for expression.

Science is a subset of philosophy. Philosophy is a means of organizing perception into some level of systematic coherence.
