Hatebreed's cover of Ghost of War vs As I Lay Dying's cover of War Ensemble vs Havok's cover of Postmortem/Raining Blood vs Vader's cover of Raining Blood. Who wins?
the sound is way to sludgy for a ghost of war cover, and overall does nothing to enhance or go beyond the original song: which is the whole point of covering a song...
if you think hatebrred is the shit - Sepultura has a much more refined, crisp sound...or even better listen to a band called Integrity out of Cleveland from late 80s-90s some of the roots of metalcore.
Never heard of Hatebreed. This is a really awesome cover of one of Slaye'rs most kickass songs - props to the drummer for keeping up with Dave - but the original still tops it based on the fact that these vocals sound like those of countless other metal bands. The death metal growl is so stock now that it isn't even funny...even Metalocalypse makes fun of it. Araya's voice, on the other hand, sounds like no other, and that's a huge part of what gives Slayer their own distinct personality.
just came from a slayer vid so im not being biast when i say, this is almost as good as the original. i love hatebreeds style mixed in with slayers riffs... its amazing.
@Aeolianshredhead I was surprised as well when I'd heard this as far as just how close Hatebreed came to Slayer's original....I actually like Jamey's growly vocal choice better, which is odd since I usually don't care for his vocals on his own songs. Maybe he should take what he did here and continue to use it because he sounds much better when not relying on his throat so much; gut vocals always sound better.
best slayer cover i ever heard, slighly new metal chunkier sound that does the original justice where bands like cradle of filth fail miserably in their covers
Slayer's version of the song will always top this due to it's the original. But, I give credit where it is due. I'm a huge fan of Hatebreed, and this cover kicks ass. Jamey's vocal style is what made the song sound more like today's metal scene. Again, excellent job by Hatebreed.
the only thing i dont like about this cover is the guitar tone, not enough mids or highs... sounds kinda hollow. but the vocals were excellent and the drums were awesome and the bass was mixed nicely as well
tbh i prefer the vocals in this more than the original, dont like how araya`s voice sounds on the original, live slayer wins hands down but for the studio version....hatebreed takes it for me.... anyway im off to listen to some postmortem
they shoulda covered more old school thrash, porb not talented enough to do a megadeth song, but at least maybe an old exodus or testament tune wouldve been nice as well
This is pretty damn good, it retains all of Slayer's feel from the original while also not ignoring Hatebreed's style. If that isn't a good cover, I don't know what is. Haters gonna hate, I suppose.
as a slayer fan of some 25 years I have to say this is a damn good cover!! I am also a fan of hatebreed this just makes me more of a fan! Thanks for posting!!
A amazing Slayer cover, mainly because it wasn't a black metal or death metal vocalist completly ruining the vocals with growls or something along those lines. Original vocal styles in covers always make it sound 100 Percent legit. Great Cover, gotta start listening to these guys more.....Hatebreed I mean......:P
@lukevertiis First off, when you respond to someone's comment, you should select the blue "REPLY" button. This cover isn't that good at all. End of story. Now, before you assume that I'm going to call you a "dumb emo fag" (As you would put it) because that's about as pathetic as telling someone "you're talking out of your arse"..Oh, wait..
it's not as clear as Slayers version or as good but if your refering to the opening riff(the first 20 seconds)...the quality was like that on the original slayer version of this song and it stays that way on hatebreeds great cover.
Great how they even covered the original intro to the tune as well! They're clearly paying tribute to some real greats on this album - well done I say to them.
As covers go, this is a pretty good one. I would not agree with any claim that it's better than the original though. It isn't a competition and even if it were, any song worth covering the first place is only worth covering because the original was a worthy example of what the covering band is aspiring towards. Quite simply, a band doesn't cover any song that's beneath them.
this is brilliant, i dissagree with you all, slayer did a kick ass version, and hatebreed have made this song there own, its still everything hatebreed even if its written by slayer, this is there interpretation of the song so its always gonna be different, total respect to all artist in both bands
Hatebreed didn't "Make this song their own song" at ALL. Seriously, NO artist can cover a Slayer song and do it better than Slayer themselves. This was a mediocre cover, at best.
I love the slayer version but i agree with you. This version is really good. They even covered the solo perfectly. The breakdown of this song is when hatebreed nails it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I hate this cover, but I think they did a way better job on the solos than Slayer. It's probably just because of the lack of crybabies. Slayer is my favorite band, but I hate those fucking crybaby pedals
hatebreed should cover every slayer song so i can listen to them......idk y but i hate the singer of slayers voice....how u gonna scream like a girl over brutal metal?
out of all the songs hatebreed covered this one is the best one. you can tell they put the most effort into the slayer song. which is expected. covering slayer and messing it up is like going to church every sunday and suckin gods cock.
Hatebreed is one of my favs...But SLAYER is untouchable and Hatebreed decided to cover my favorite Slayer song..... i am glad we have the same taste.
They did well, But fell short...the break is not as powerful as Slayer's. not even close. they should have covered "Jesus Saves" it would have suited them better.
I have to say this, If Hatebreed wrote this song, it would be the #1 FUCKING SONG ON MY LIST! bigtime slayer fan, and even more so for Hatebreed!
