I haven't seen this intro since the seventies. But five seconds into it, it all came flooding back. And I thought Robert Ulrich only appeared in Vegas in the 70's. Great theme and show. Thanks for posting
@KennyThrusts , What's to understand? the Jump through the Window to take them by suprise and Roof jumpling down the side of the building was to move fast and quickly and into position as quick nd fast as possible. they can't spend time moving slowly and waste time.... this was a great show as a kid growing up during the 70's I loved it.
@MrFrank1968 the disco version. i'll never forget it. also the small vinyl record in the sleeves you would get at kmart or the record store for theme songs. or what ever was popular at the time.
I remember as a teenager watching this show. Steve Forrester and many of the actors went on to act in other Arron Spelling shows. Too bad SWAT was really a bad show that spawned many local police to emulate them with SWAT teams that in some cases were a waste of $.
@bigrob981 Well, even back in the day the MP5 was new and popular. Tv shows are so flashy and inaccurate. That's why I don't like hollywood action flicks :( They look worse than cartoons.
@AAV47 , since the TV show was based around the creation of the LAPD SWAT unit, why would they use weapons that were not used by SWAT. In 1967-68 SWAT members had to purchase thier own gear, they were using .38 caliber revolvers. Not only did they have to request to use the Colt 1911, they had to buy it themselves or wait for one to be confiscated. Since most had been trained in the military on Garands,M-1 carbines or even M-14's the M-16 was a small lightweight rifle.
@bigrob981 Damn. that sucks. sorry I didn't know. Sounded like quite a pathetic unit then, but special police today are armed as well as army special forces....
interesting...alot of people don't know that the FBI and the secret service in their early days didn't even carry guns! ANd like you said, most police depts in the 60's and 70's only carried .38 caliber revolvers. police were so out-gunned in those days, which is why they called the west coast the "wild west" back in those days!
Man, i came across the complete first season dvd series. Man i opened the floodgate of memories. Back when tv made good qaulity family entertainment .Not like the crap you see on tv today. Thanks for the upload
This theme was so cool they released it for sale. I remember the show started out a big hit then burned out. The show does make you wanna be a SWAT cop and the LAPD SWAT team is BADASS!!!
@tonywallacess45 , SWAT became a common feature of many cities after that L.A. shootout with the Symbionese Liberation Army in '74 The song was a hit, too.
I remember one time when deploying his men Hondo said the following: "TJ up on the roof! Street, Luca, you"re with me! Deke! Draw their fire!" Figures, let the brother get shot at LOL! I guess it was because Deke was fast! And who the hell was driving that van?!?!?
When I was a kid I thought this was the coolest thing ever. Now that I see it, it's not quite as cool as I remember. A black spray painted, top heavy bread truck is not what I would consider cool.
No Anti lock brakes on that truck and they don't even cover each other when entering an occupied structure. haha! Still good theme to bump uglies too!
Besides Hawaii 5-0, SWAT is also another tv theme song that makes one's andrenalin flow. Similarly both themes are brief and catchy. But I do agree with you that H5-0 is the All time high and fave!
Even the late Jack Lord has a bit of pierce brosnan's image. Steve Macgaret only have boyish charms not enough to motivate one's thrill !
Robert Urich: likable star of tv series Spenser for Hire and Vegas. Regular player in many a made for TV movie in the 80's and 90's. Sadly, passed away from a rare form of cancer a few years ago. That particularly saddened me. Urich always struck me as a decent, down to earth kind of guy; I was especially struck by his attitude and insights when he initially thought he had licked his affliction. He is missed.
Here in NYC, this show was on after Starsky and Hutch on ABC. I can't remember what night but it might have been Saturday. Yikes, I was young then....
James Coleman's frozen mid-air still shot in the opening credits might be the coolest shot of any actor in the history of television. I remember doing this stuff off my deck in the early 80's.
kamrudeen kaka and sukkur masi at garden east jamatkhana having chakkar with each other. after kissing each other they had a cheap bunkabab and then they sit in mini bus and went to bhaijan chowk and both of them killed each other. so this is the end of the story
At 46 the black guy jumps through the window, hops up and aims his rifle. If you look carefully, you'll notice the guy jumping through the window rolls to the right is the stunt double. the actor popped up to the right to aim his rifle.
Yo, godanp, who cares if Rod Perry didn't do his own stunts? Deacon Kay was Hondo's main man. He was the best character on the show. Perry came back in 2003 to play the role of Deke's (LL Cool J) father in the movie. And guess who drove the command vehicle?
And the Brazilian police force was trained by Grape Ape and Popeye, Explains why they throw bananas and dance around singing about Spinich ! Those Goofy Brazilians they make me want to grow poppys and smuggle coke !
LAPD SWAT is probably the only police SWAT team that shares tactics and training with DELTA force. Best SWAT team in the country. I'm not sure if FBI HRT is better but its close.
@Scharfschutzen1 I had no idea Philly was so High-speed. We agree that LA is tuff though. Being a soldier I lean towards anyone with a Delta background. Of course they are patterned after SAS. I think we can all agree that SAS is DEATH!!!
Wow, our uniforms are so different, so interesting how they've changed over the years. The SWAT team started in the 60s, now we wear balaclavas, gas masks, PASGT etc.
Yeah, but balaclavas aren't there to make us look good (although we do look rather extraordinary lol jk) but they're there to protect our faces, they're cut resistant.
Yeah, I know, hehe. Yeah, my dad is a officer in the swedish SWAT (Piketen), so I'm really interested in special forces around the world, and every team in the world uses balaclavas, and I love it, cause it looks professional and awesome! ;) Btw , it's cool to talk to a real SWAT! :D hehe!
70s are coming back. There is a new show premiering on CBS?? this summer called "Swingtown" set in 1976 about, well, swingers. I, myself, am writing a series that is set in the 70s. Call it cheese, call it what you will, but I remember back then watching shows I loved EVERY night. Now, my faves come on only on Sun., Mon., and Tues. nights. And none of them are reality shows!
No,the SWAT movie that came out in 2003 (I have a copy of its DVD) is total crap.Samuel Jackson was badly cast cause the original Hondo Harrelson was white, and Colin Farrell as Jim Street is a poor imitation of Robert Urich. Worst of all,the reason I bought the DVD was for the SWAT theme, and it's NOT EVEN THERE!!
Back when this series aired it offered viewers something a little different from the typical cop series they were accustomed to watching (for example "ADAM 12" or "The Mod Squad").
The opening song from SWAT was being played on radio stations and the dudes in the series were running around with weapons other than the usual pistol or shotgun.
Remakes suck. Consider this...in the movie S.W.A.T, the team is sitting round a table in an establishemnt, eventually they all start humming the S.W.A.T tv show's theme song. A show made in the 70's with characters such as Harrelson, Kay, Luca and others which parallel the movie's characters. What kind of moron thought this sequence out?
This show and Emergency! were my favorites to watch when I was a kid. It's great watching a show where men act like men. Must be why we women can't find any manly men these days....no good role models anymore :-) BTW....is season 2 out yet???
A "manly man" takes control of a situation and is not afraid to make decisions and, if they make a mistake, they aren't afraid to admit it. Alot of tv shows these days show men as wimps and cowards who are afraid to take control and their girlfriends/wives (whatever the case may be) has to step up and take charge. And the men are portrayed as idiots. I don't believe they show men to be as they should be, those who are decisive and take-charge kinda guys.

Way better than CHiPs. Paramilitary groups are the best!

And just what IS your definition of a 'manly man'- Tony Montana from 'Scarface'?
richintalent 3 years ago
A "manly man" takes control of a situation and is not afraid to make decisions and, if they make a mistake, they aren't afraid to admit it. Alot of tv shows these days show men as wimps and cowards who are afraid to take control and their girlfriends/wives (whatever the case may be) has to step up and take charge. And the men are portrayed as idiots. I don't believe they show men to be as they should be, those who are decisive and take-charge kinda guys.
