I am no expert, but I don't like it. It sounds too sharp and harsh, as if it is "fixed" by a computer. Or maybe it's not, but she doesn't seem to have received academic training anyway.

If you don't understand German what does it matter whether she pronounces some of the words incorrectly. There are thousands of examples of non-English speaking singers whose pronunciation of English leaves much to be desired but the music still comes accross.

It's not about the fluency - you just don't really understand what she's singing. In my opinion you at least should be able to sing it mostly clearly.

For example there's that casting participant that doesn't even know what she's singing in English - but you still understand WHAT she's singing, because her pronunciation is mostly right. That's what I'm missing here.

Okay, I see what you're ssaying, but I guess I'm so used to American singers that can barely pronounce their own language I never think about other languages I couldn't ever understand anyway. Is it her accent that throws off her pronunciation?

Yeah, I'd say it's the accent. I'd say she's to "soft" while singing. I wouldn't describe the whole German language als hard - but there are parts, where you need to be "hard", so others really understand it. And, as light as the song is, without that hardness she's kinda blurring some words.

It's only offensive if you don't pronounce your words properly. That's what I mean. I'm an American too, did I not make that clear? So I'm not sure how I'm insulting an entire country, my country. No, I'm not a singer, but I get aggravated at people who do not know how to properly pronounce their words, thus I prefer not to listen to music that sounds like gibberish to me. When I listen to foreign music I know that's what I'll get, but I prefer to understand songs in my own language, don't you?

I think you guys are completely missing the whole point. Foreign languages are difficult to speak. Try doing that while performing such vocal brilliance as Miss Westenra. Look, not all singers can perfect pronunciation, dialect, and accent of every language that is sung. Think of opera singers. Although there are vocal and diction coaches, a few singers still never felt comfortable (or never did well) in certain lingos. Before you cast stones, try doing it yourself. Sing a Russian song.

I wasn't talking about people singing in foreign languages. I was talking about people singing in their own language. There are dozens of singers (and I'm going with American singers because that's what I am) who cannot or simply do not properly pronounce their words while singing. It is thoroughly frustrating.

Opera singers actually go to school and take classes to learn how to pronounce other languages. Some may not be entirely comfortable singing in another language, but all learn correct pronunciation.

okay, you are right, but the problem is... learning german with this, you would breath when you should make only a bit of those "hard" sounds. you can s ing very soft in german... its only... you have to do it another way when you would do it in english. this truly is a beautiful song, but i understand hardly a word.
