@hotfuzz1995 They are unbelievably easy to train because they are so smart and if raised with a loving family that is willing to give them the time and attention they deserve, you will never find a more loving or loyal family companion. Get your pup from a good breeder where you can meet the parents. If the parents of the puppy have the disposition you are looking for AND you do your part, you've got a great friend.
I had a 125 pound male named Buddy. He was aggresive to other animals, i would find dead animals in the yard all the time, 2 opossums, a box turtle, Rats. frogs, even birds a couple of times. He couldnt bite through the turtle so he was throwing it up in the air letting it hit the cement trying to crack it open. But with people he was a sweetheart, i could put my hands in his food bowl, take a bone from his mouth with no problem. Dobies make great pets they just need plenty excersise.
@tutman2006 A female is next on my list. I read they were more aloof with the 'i'm too cool for you' attitude lol. My boy is soooooooooooooo cuddly and snuggly, my god. Sometimes I wake up in he morning with him totally conked out, a paw draped over me and his head buried in my neck, snoring and sometimes drooling. Yuck! He is definitely the biggest cuddlebug I've ever seen in a dog!
Beautiful girl you have there. I have a 13 year old male. Best dog I've ever owned and most loyal friend I've ever had.And still in great shape. Runs and plays every day. I keep thinking the next one I'll get will be a female. Quick questions: Do you find the females to be more "snuggly" and affectionate than the males?
I play tug of war all the time with my Dobie, and it does not make her aggressive toward her toys. She knows the difference between just playing and challenging her for real. Dogs are much smarter than they are given credit for.
You shouldn't try play tug of war with his toys, it's teaching him to protect his things. When you give a doberman a toy, it becomes HIS. When you try to take it, you are challenging him. You need to do a little training.
Its simple logic. Positive rewards for good behavior, and negative response for unwanted behavior. Never hit your dog with your hand. Use a newspaper or magazine for discipline. That way the dog won’t be afraid of your hand, just the noise/whap of a harmless roll of paper.
@ROTTYLUV4ME The newspaper doesnt hurt them. They just dont like the noise. OMG! People I believe in animal rights but sometimes people take it too far.
@tutman2006 I'm currently having a hard time trying to teach my 17 week old red dobie to know when not to bite..or what not to bite. someone told me to give her a tap on the nose but that only makes her more aggressive. I've started using a newspaper and it's worked a lot better.
@DhabyaniVIP Course not! But you have to nip the bad behavior in the bud when they're young as these dogs are powerful. My bf allowed my dog as a puppy to jump all over him and he reinforced that with laughter and general playfulness, well, that doesn't fly with me -- so he learned to be a gentleman around me, but to treat my bf like a chew toy. I told him, it's your fault. Shouldn't have done that. Now he's working with him to stop... haha, hate to say I told you so!
OH that is great!! Take lots of pictures and videos of your puppy. I didn't take enough when she was a pup and wish I had more to watch of the little fur ball.
She is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! We go to see our Dobie pup for the first time tomorrow and I'm so excited I could burst! She'll be the first dobe we've ever had in our lives and I can't wait for the craziness to begin! We've waited forever and a day for this moment.
hi, I'm from Poland but live since 22 years in Germany and also had a Doberman. I must say that my "Maggy" showed EXACTLY the same behaviour like your "Ruby". I notice that this behaviour is race-bound. Dobermans are amazing dogs and I will buy a new one in the near future. My Maggy suddenly died from one day to another on 20.08.2007 from a burst ulcer on the liver. At this time I lost my one and only friend. Its nice to see that other people have fun with these amazing breed dogs. Take care :)
That is so sad about your Maggy! I will be heart broken when my ruby goes. She snuggles and sleeps with us in bed every night. Its getting colder here in USA Michigan, so ruby likes keeping warm with us.
Best dogs ever. I will always have a doberman in my life for as long as I live.
A pure breed dog is breed by specific guide lines of the American kennel group. Basically only show quality type dogs are the ones who get breeded. The qualities of show dogs are passed from one puppy to another. Kinda like if a dog has any medical or physical deformities you would not want that passes on so you don't.
So you don’t breed a dog with bad qualities that one would not want. I.e. dieses, miss match colors or physical issues. But inbreeding is breeding sister and brother.
They love to play ruff.....the only creature that has' turned' on me is my tiny 7.5 yorkie........LOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!! Dobies are giant Teddy bears........
thank you... She hasn't turned on me. I haven't heard of any dobermans doing that. The dogs that turn on you are inbreed dogs. get a pure breed and you are safe.
its just like if brother and sister had childern.. they will be retarted.. the same for dogs.
i also love the dobbies and they r adorable. i have one of my own and she is horribly crazy in a good way.they r easy to train but hard to walk they get crazy when they see another dog. mines lovesdogs and never i aggressive. btw yours is cute
I love dobermans! My sister and I want to get one (one for each one because I read in a online article that sometimes to wear out a doberman is to get another doberman to play with it XD)
How would you train the doberman so that is is not aggressive or bark or jump at the guests I invite home?
You're doberman is so adorable btw adn i love how when you say he's cheating cuz he got his mouth on it, he moves his mouth just a tiny bit away haha. smart dog. sneaky too :D
best way to train a doberman to not be aggressive is to socialize the dog with other people and other animals.
let others pet the dog and bring over other dogs to play with your doberman. This is just a basic rule of thumb for all dogs.
to make a dog mean you do just the opposite. to make them mean you don't let anyone touch the dog and never lets other animals play with your dog. that makes them mean, or i should say aggressive/protective.
. They are amazing dogs, and i'll never own another breed, but you will be WAY, WAY over your head unless you know a serious amount about the breed. They require at LEAST 30min of activity (physical AND mental) or they could do a lot of damage to your property because of bordem. They are a breed with a LOT of health problems, and can cost you thousands of dollars (ask me how I know).
. LAST OF ALL: RESCUE ONE!!! There are TONS of doberman rescues in the country, prob one in your state. A rescue doby will bring so much more joy, and be more thankful. All of my dobys have been rescues.
Thank you so much for your advice! Did your doberman warm up to you when you first adopted it? i'm afraid to adopt sometimes because I'm afraid of it not liking me or something I do causes a hidden response thats not very good (say...biting?).
I will try the adoption center (there is one specific for Dobermans in Georgia but they do have strict rules but I'm guessing thats because they really want the Dobermans to get into good homes :D)
I adopted my doberman about 4 months now and she warmed up to me. Now she is my shadow and cuddle buddy. I love her so much. I thought the same things as you. if the do will like me or not or will have aggression. Rescues know the dog more then adoption centers because they are in foster homes. Highly recommend adopting an older doberman. Puppies are to much time and money! Older ones are house trained and sometimes already know a few tricks to impress your friends =)
I have a question if you don't mind me asking haha.
This may be a stupid question but I'm just curious and my mom is really paranoid about this (cuz asian mom wants house clean lol)
Do Dobermans have a ...doggy smell? like I'm sure that happens after you bathe them but according to my mom even if you bathe them, the house and furniture will smell like dog. Do they exhibit less doggy smell since they're short hair and don't shed alot?
@tea4al . My dobermann passed away October 2009 sadly at the age of only 7. But he was very calm and friendly. Although outside he didn't pay attention to any humans, he was just focused on me. And when it came to other dogs, he didn't get along with other males but with females he was so kind. Figures huh hehe. But to be honest, dobermanns are very dominant so I believe it's difficult to get two males to go along, maybe if one of them are submissive.
@Dodgemistress But either way, he was very friendly with people inside, he would always sit in their lap or stand next to them and make them pet him haha. Dobermanns are actually sweet by nature but I will say this also, they are very protective as well as loyal. So if anyone would be a threat towards you they wouldn't doubt protecting you. I loved that with my dog, but he was the sweetest dog ever.
@Dodgemistress also, what's good and what made our dog so good were RULES. As well as excersize. We walked him 5-6 times a day, 1-2 hours in the forest every day. And we also about once a week went to the forest and we had his favorite toy and I walked out like about 6 miles into the forest and put it there went back, waited for like 2 hours and then he had to find it. He was very good at that and it was good mental stimulation. So keep that in mind, doing excersizes that challenge them mentally
yeah she will wip the toys around. funny they land on top of the TV stand sometimes.
great dogs.. just have to have the time to spend with them/training time. I got laid off at the time so I had plenty of time to work with her and get her to listen.
the news paper is all you need to get there attention.

Well I have had Ruby the doberman for 3 years now and she hasn't learned any aggressiveness towards toys from playing with here like this.
I can put my hands in her food dish and take bones and toys away with no resistance. I'm the master and she knows when to back off.
as long as that is established you will be okay.
I have years of experince in training dogs so I'm good. for the newbee who doesn't have experience with dogs, I would then agree with you.
tutman2006 1 year ago

`Dude I just wanna ask you a lil question please! First of all, GREAT DOBERMAN! BEAUTIFUL! :)
Now the question, do they bite when playing? and does it hurt? :P
My question may sound stupid but my german shepherd puppy bites while playing and it freakin hurts!
DhabyaniVIP 1 year ago
Well your shepherd shouldn't be biting. The puppy doesn't know better and they just get real excited and might not realize that they are biting.
The best thing to do is to correct the bad behavior by using a command other than no. Use a command like "NO BITE!"
The command NO can be used but they can get confused if you use NO for every correcting of bad behavior.
tutman2006 1 year ago
Its simple logic. Positive rewards for good behavior, and negative response for unwanted behavior. Never hit your dog with your hand. Use a newspaper or magazine for discipline. That way the dog won’t be afraid of your hand, just the noise/whap of a harmless roll of paper.
