so, if you have your balance right water replacement should be to top off evaporated water. if you do need to change water you would do it gradually over several days as you don't want to shock your fish. of course each case if different and you might need to change out a lot of water if you have a sever ammonia build up.
Greenfrog, I'm looking at this as an aquarium keeper. I have just started to look at this aquaponic systems. regarding your question about removing the fish waste. In a fish tank you don't remove all the water under normal conditions so i would asume the same here. you have to keep in mind that the waste is what generates the nitrogen cycle. waste----->ammonia------->-nitrite------>-nitrate-------plant food.
Wrong, ammonia is preferred by plants then nitrite then nitrate, due to the reduction of nitrate requires more energy from the plant than of nitrite, then ammonia. There should be no concern about nitrifying bacteria growing in the system, they are useless. Plant is the great member of nitrogen cycle, not bacteria.
@avitoyee there is a family of bacteria call "Nitrosomas" that convert the ammonia to nitrite. i've been using fish tank waste water for years on plants and even given to friends that have had yard plant issues. the effect the fish water has on the plants is astounding.
Naturally occurring bacteria that is in the air you breathe will colonise the system naturally. The names of the bacteria are Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter species. Google "Nitrogen Cycle" for more information.
the type of fish i want to grow is vegetarian so i can grow the plants in the same system and feed the fish. .. my question is that when you drain the fish waist water into the plants.. the fish will be without water.. how long can you keep the fish without water .. or you keep minimum water in the fish tank .. not all is drained out to the plants and then recycle the water in to the fish tank..
Murray God bless you! I have everything almost ready now, but i don't know what to feed the fish. I am looking into duckweed.. and vegetarian food..some of the types of fish i am planning on growing eat worms, insects, magets, .... i am trying to see if they eat duckweed.. or any other vegetarian food. because its hard to get worms unless i raise them.. I dont know how to raise worms. also, I wanted to know If Talapia can be raised in India. or what is the Hindi name for Talapia.
