John is a genius... I missed this medley somehow, but will ask him to play it the next time I see him. Like so many great artists, John can use the support of any and all listeners who appreciate him. If you dig this, he has instructional videos and a number of different albums you can find. He is an extremely rare talent and I consider the jazz world (and the guitar world) very lucky to have him around. Hope you agree!
He is passionately at one with his instrument in the same light as " Mclaughlin, Martino, Paco, Holdsworth etc, etc.... Beautiful voicings, tone and imagination... Takes the listener to another world like Ambercrombie and Frisell... Its nice to hear a non-cliche player in a world so full of "Wes/Pass" copycats... Wonderful John, thanks for the inspiration***
If you know anything at all about jazz, you'll realize that solo pianists and guitarists often play pieces without the pulse of tempo. It's called "rubato" and you're an idiot if you think that someone can't or doesn't swing just because he/she is playing any given piece rubato.
This is the first time I have ever responded to someone on facebook. I have been a professional guitarist for 30+ years. John happens to also be a friend of mine. He is not a classical player, furthermore, he can swing his ass off when he wants to, so don't be so quick to throw him under the bus if you haven't heard him in other contexts. Besides, who wrote the rule book on jazz that said it has to swing?
There is no rule book, just personal preference, which I was expressing. I am only interested in swinging jazz from any era. Please direct me to a clip of John in full swing, and I'll revise my opinion of him. You didn't reply "on facebook", by the way: this is Youtube.
I hope I didn't sound argumentative in a personal way. I too prefer playing that swings more than John typically does. I in fact can't direct you to a clip where he plays this way. I have heard "swing" in a more traditional way only while I was playing with him, or when he was sitting in with folks who were playing in a more "swinging" style." Also, I am glad that anyone is listening to jazz in this day and age, as I fear this music could become extinct, so thx for listening and caring!
Precisely, this is just an incredible musical statement. To undermine the beauty because it doesn't fit some kind of criteria is absolutely wrong. Knowing John's talent level I'd say he could do just about anything on the guitar. I bet if he really wanted to he could shred some 3 note per string scales with the best of them but he's obviously interested in something far more sophisticated. Thanks Curly.
@curlymaple2468 There are so many know it alls on youtube, if you start responding to such nonsence, you would be spending the rest of your life doing so. Ignorance is bliss, let them stay in the blissful land. I also play, wish I had such musical insight as he does. Oh well one can only try and hope.
@Drblooter99 Buy some of his albums and tell me he doesn't swing. For example, at a minute and 45 seconds on the track "Nobody Else But Me" off of his album Resonance, John goes into a walking bass line comping thing that swings like hell. Just because someone chooses not to "swing" all the time doesn't mean they can't or doesn't. By the way, its very rude to say "whatever style he thinks he plays". If you want to criticize someone, try not to be so abrasive.
That guitar sounds really REALLY good! The operator is in command.

I like how his playing is ultra-modern but you can still hear older music a little underneath the surface.

Yes fair enough, but my point is that he doesn't swing, whatever style he thinks he plays. If you think he can, please show me where he does.
